Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs in Canada

We may have already said goodbye to 2017, but we definitley haven’t taken the time to reflect on our beauty choices from the past year. Between new launches and partnerships, 2017 was an explosion of amazing products new and old. While we know how different everyone’s beauty tastes can be, the claims for the best of the year usually come as a common agreement. In honour of the year that’s past, we’ve narrowed down our list of the best of the best beauty finds of 2017.

We went Canadian with the lips category and chose Toronto-based Bite Beauty. In 2017, Bite Beauty launched its first liquid lipstick formula that is nothing short of amazing. It’s highly pigmented, very nourishing, and comes in 20 unique shades – making it a must-have for all lipstick lovers.

When it comes to blush, we had to go with Hourglass’ Ambient Lighting Blush Collection. This beautiful collection gives off a subtle highlight, giving the cheeks a beautiful glow without looking too heavy. It’s a buildable product, so it’s super easy to work with.

The perfect combination of colour and structure, Physicians Formula bronzers are long-lasting giving you a subtle tan all year around. Physicians Formula is known for its flattering shades that work with every skin tone.

Drugstore brands are upping their game when it comes to quality products, and we are happy to say that Milani stole our hearts with its Strobelight Glow Powders. This collection is not only $10, but it’s available in seven different shades that you can blend together to create the ultimate glow.

Regardless if it’s a single or palette format, Color Pop stole the show when it came to eyeshadows in 2017. Color Pop’s Super Shock Shadows feature a creamy, long-lasting formula giving you an amazing payoff that will turn any boring look into a glam look in an instant.

Liquid Eyeliner
For the perfect winged liner, you need a liner that’s rich in colour and smudge-proof. Stila not only makes one of the best liquid eyeliners with the finest tip for precision on the market but its liquid liners are 100%  cry proof. The Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner comes in a variety of colours from the traditional black to a cool white.

When it comes to head-turning lashes, we’ve only got eyes for L’Oreal’s Voluminous Lash Paradise. If the incredible price tag wasn’t enough to have us using it time and time again, the fact that one coat leaves us with ultra voluptuous volume and length certainly does.

Beauty Jobs – Glitter Glamour

Monday, December 21st, 2015

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty JobsGetFileAttachment

If there’s a time of the year to wear glitter, it’s definitely Christmas. From family get-together’s to work dinners, there’s an occasion to indulge in a bit of extra glam. I’ll show you a few ways to wear glitter liner that range from subtle to all out glam.

The first option is for the more subtle makeup loving gals. Instead of opting for a traditional liquid liner, something like a shimmer pencil liner is great; it still provides a fun, festive alternative to your normal routine without being too high maintenance. The Urban Decay 24/7 metallic pencils are great!

Second involves using glitter eyeliner as you would traditional eyeliner.  But because glitters are often chunkier (meaning they’re more sheer), it’s best to start by lining where you want the glitter to go with a black liquid liner first. This way you have a starting point, and something to help boost the intensity of the look.

Or, for a more “hey notice me!” look, addthe glitter liner under the eyes (focusing more on the inner corner to center). This will makes your eyes appear a bit further apart, and really brighten up the look!

Third, use glitter liners all over the lid (because why not?). Because the liners are often so sheer, they can easily be used for multiple purposes. Fill in a bit of the liner over the mobile lid, and then take a blending brush to buff out the edges, making for a seamless transition over the rest of the eye makeup. Just make sure you keep your eyes closed for a bit and let the liner set, otherwise you’ll have glitter everywhere. Lighter colours work best for this approach.

Lastly, create makeshift glitter eyeliner. Don’t feel like shelling out big bucks for some gorgeous liquid eyeliner? Not to worry! Simply use whatever highly pigmented liner you already have (liquid works great), and put a bit of pigment over the line. Just spray your smudger brush with a setting spray (like Mac Fix plus), dip it into the pigment, and carefully trace over the liner.

And with all these looks, make sure you do your eye makeup before you do your base—otherwise, things can get pretty messy!

Beauty Jobs – Every Day Contouring for the Office

Tuesday, October 6th, 2015

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs jtookes [394045]

Inspiration image courtesy of Into the Gloss

If I had to narrow it down, I would definitely say contouring has been one of the hottest beauty trends of 2015. However, as I’m sure you all know, it’s not exactly easy to find a product that’s right for you. When looking for the perfect product, be it a palette or otherwise, you have to consider a few key factors, one of which includes the intensity if the product’s finish. While powder products are perfect for giving you that super high-cut cheekbone, the effects may not be the most subtle—especially not for every day makeup. Thankfully, this is the cosmetics industry, so there is always an alternative. Cream-based contour products offer a soft, lightly sculpted look which can look extremely natural if blended well enough. The result can be a fresh-faced and yet subtly contoured appearance (a la Jasmine Tookes).

If you think a cream-based contour product may be right for you, make sure to check out the following suggestions to achieve a natural, every day contour!

1. Sephora Collection Highlight Lowlight Face Contour Duo, C$25sephora_contour [394047]

This double-sided contour stick’s super buttery cream-to-powder formula ensures a smooth and precise application due to its slanted design.

2. Clinique Chubby Stick Sculpting Contour, C$26 available at Sephora

clinique_contour [394044]

Although it is only available in one shade, Clinique’s Sculpting Chubby stick has a super blendable formula which makes it easy for people of varying complexions to make use of it.

3. Stila Shape & Shade Custom Contour Duo, C$46 available at Urban Outfitters

stila_contour [394048]

Not only is Stila’s Shape & Shade kit blessed with a phenomenally pigmented formula, and a generous amount of product, it comes with easy to follow step-by-step instructions on how to contour for your face shape!

In addition to the more muted results you will achieve with a cream-based contouring product, you also have the option of blending out the product with your fingers instead of a brush. That is not to forsake brushes altogether because, but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re running late and have to apply your makeup on the run!

4. Sephora Collection Pro Angled Contour Brush, C$37

sc_procontour [394046]

If you’re a traditional sort of girl who prefers the standard brush application, make sure to use flat, dense brush for the best blending results.

Beauty Jobs – Combination Nation

Tuesday, July 21st, 2015

When the sun is shining, and the temperatures are soaring, the last thing that most of us want to do is spend hours getting ready in the morning when we could be enjoying the outdoors. That’s why finding versatile products that can be used on the go is essential for making the most out of summer.

The Stila Convertible Colours are amazing products for summer time.  This creamy product works just as well on the cheeks as it does on the lips, and can easily be layered throughout the day to add more intensity.  As they are available in 6 shades, you are sure to find your perfect match.  Similarly are the Bobbi Brown Pot Rouges, or the Revlon PhotoReady Cream Blushes.

Tinted moisturizers and BB creams are also essential items for the summer.  Many contain SPF, some as high as SPF 50, like the Dr. Jart Premium Beauty Balm with SPF 45. This is great for those of us who are a little forgetful when it comes to applying sunblock in the morning.  Many also have colour correcting and soothing properties, like the SmashboxCamera Ready CC Cream, which will help your complexion if you do happen to suffer from a sunburn, especially if you begin suffering from sun spots later in life.

If you’re going away for the weekend, or plan on changing your look up during the course of the day, it’s great to keep something like the TarteColoured Clay Bronzer Blush on hand.  This multi-coloured face product can be used for many purposes.  You can focus the brush on the pink parts for a shimmery blush, the darker brown sports for a contour and bronzer, or the individual “petal” shapes can be used for a multidimensional eyeshadow look.

While many of these items are made for multiple uses, it’s always good to have some tricks in your repertoire for emergency situations.  In a pinch, you can use a lipstick as a blush.  Just dab some onto your finger, and pat it onto you cheeks.  And remember, the creamier the lipstick, the more smoothly it will apply.  Bronzers and highlights can be used as eyeshadows, and can be applied with fingers if need be.  Lastly, if you have a small tipped brush, mascaras can be turned into eyeliners.  Just tap your brush onto the top of the mascara wand, wipe off any excess, and apply as usual.

1. Stila Convertible Colour, C$33, available at Sephora

2. Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge, C$30, available at select Shoppers Drug Marts and Murale

3. Revlon PhotoReady Cream blush, available at Shoppers Drug Marts

4. Dr. Jart Premium Beauty Balm, C$48, available at Sephora

5. Smashbox Camera Ready CC Cream, C$50, available at Sephora

6. TarteColoured Clay Bronzer Blush, C$36, available at Sephora

Beauty Jobs – Hot New Product

Thursday, August 29th, 2013

Ever wonder how runway-makeup pro Pat McGrath creates those perfect foiled looks on models? Sometimes, she thinks outside of the box and uses pieces of actual aluminum foil, but for the off the runway alternative, Stila has created the perfect shadow. The buildable and super metallic shadow comes in a variety of twelve colours including grays, golds, greens, purples and blues. With the purchase of a single eyeshadow you also receive a deluxe size of the Stay All Day Liquid Eye Primer which preps and acts as a base to ensure long lasting shadow. These shadows are a Sephora exclusive. The shade I most want to get my hands on is Metallic Merlot a deep wine plum colour that perfectly ties in with Fall’s oxblood trend.

Beauty Jobs – Beauties of the Small Screen

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

It’s easy to find beauty inspiration for the special occasions of life – just pick up the closest People magazine or log onto any number of celebrity websites and you’re sure to find red carpet looks for everything from prom to your wedding…but what about for every day? I suggest taking a longer look next time you’re catching up on your PVR’d programming. Some of my favourite TV characters actually have pretty amazing hair and makeup that translates to real life quite nicely.

1. Lucy Hale as Aria Montgomery in Pretty Little Liars – Of the four teens at center of an anonymous tormentor’s twisted game, Aria has the most unique sense of style for her wardrobe and her makeup. Her stand-out feature is definitely her beautiful full eyebrows; enhance your brows like Aria’s with Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo, $30, available at Sephora.

2. Emily van Camp as Emily Thorne in Revenge – Cunning and manipulative but always stunning, Emily Thorne takes down her enemies with not a hair out of place. She keeps her makeup understated and classic with a nude lip and a flush of colour on the cheeks; get the look with Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Blush in Quickie, $30, available at Sephora.

3. Rachel Bilson as Dr. Zoe Hart in Hart of Dixie – Possibly the cutest MD on TV, you can’t help but love Rachel Bilson as Zoe Hart. The only thing better than her amazing wardrobe is her subtly sun kissed ombre hair. Try the look for yourself with Feria by L’Oreal Paris Wild Ombre, $10, available at London Drugs.

4. Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilbert in The Vampire Diaries – Speaking of hair envy, I’ve got a serious case of it when it comes to Elena from Vampire Diaries. Although having a gloriously full head of hair like hers may be a thing of my dreams, I can get one step closer with John Frieda Luxurious Volume Touchably Full shampoo and conditioner, $10 each.

5. Christina Hendricks as Joan Harris in Mad Men – Retro makeup like Joan Harris’s never really goes out of style. It’s an easily updated look that will make you stand out next time you’re out with the girls or on a date. Recreate Joan’s sexy cat eye with a great liquid liner like Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner, $26, available at Sephora.

6. Hayden Panettiere as Juliette Barnes in Nashville – Country music and big hair go hand in hand. As an unabashed fan of the genre, it’s no surprise I’m inspired by the big blonde locks of Hayden Panettiere’s character. To transform your hair into Nashville-ready locks, use Sultra’s The Bombshell 1” styling wand, $150, available at Sephora.

Beauty Jobs – Toronto Fashion Week Staples

Friday, March 15th, 2013

Toronto’s World MasterCard Fashion Week is just about to start yet another season. While it’s easy to get wrapped up in the exciting pace of non-stop fashion, we still always want to look our best while meeting deadlines and taking in all of the talent Canadian designers have to offer. A few key essential items is all it takes to continue looking fresh faced from the first show to the last.

1. Stila Lip and Cheek Stain in Acai Crush, $32, available at Sephora
A two-in-one product is always a bonus, this Stila lip glaze will keep you looking rosy and awake even on the final day of shows. A bright lip shade is always a must, with springs black and white trend, the vibrant ruby red shade will offer a fresh pop of colour.

2. Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray, $35, available at Sephora
Worrying about your makeup lasting a full day of shows and maybe even for an impromptu after-party is a thing of the past. There are tons of makeup setting sprays that keeps your look lasting for hours. I like Urban Decay’s All Nighter Spray, a light mist gives your makeup serious staying power.

3. Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo, $20, available at Sephora
Getting a blow out the morning of the first day of shows is always a nice treat. To preserve your blowout and save time, skip a shampoo (we won’t tell anyone!) and apply Detox’s Dry Shampoo instead. It will do the trick by absorbing oil and adding body to second day hair, plus you don’t have to worry about any of that icky white residue found in some dry shampoo’s.

Beauty Jobs – Makeout-Proof Lipsticks

Thursday, February 7th, 2013

There is romance in the air! Valentine’s Day is coming, and whether you have a beau or not, I’m sure you still have smooching on the brain. While lipstick gives you a sexy date night look, chances are he doesn’t want to end up wearing it, too (or want to wait around while you run to reapply throughout the night). So before you pucker up this Valentine’s Day, grab one of these long lasting lipsticks to power you through dinner, drinks, and your steamy make-out session. Your date will think you look hot, and he won’t have to worry about borrowing your makeup remover at the end of the night.

1. NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil, $30, available in Vancouver at The Bay Downtown, 674 Granville St. 604-681-6211. This combo lipstick/lip pencil is so easy to apply, even a toddler could use it (seriously, it’s like a giant crayon). Available in 13 shades from pale pink to deep aubergine, it’s easy to find a colour you love that will last for hours.

2. MAC Pro Longwear Lip Crème, $21, available in Vancouver at MAC Robson, 908 Robson St. 604-682-6588. I’ve been obsessed with these longwearing lipsticks from MAC since they launched a couple years ago. Best applied with a lip brush for precise placement, once it sets it isn’t going anywhere. It’s the most moisturizing longwear lipstick I’ve come across.

3. Kat von D Everlasting Love Liquid Lipstick, $23, available at Sephora. Being a tattoo artist must give someone a secret knowledge on permanent body decoration because Kat von D created one serious long-lasting lip colour! I’m a particular fan of the brick red shade ‘Outlaw,’ a perfect choice for a vampy matte lip on Valentine’s Day.

4. Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick, $29, available at Sephora. This is my newest lipstick love, and it looks like we’re going to have a long term relationship. It is highly pigmented, dries to a gorgeous matte finish, and feels satiny smooth on your lips. I especially love the hot pink ‘Fiore’ shade.

5. CoverGirl Outlast Lip Stain, $9, available at London Drugs. If you’re going for a more natural look, this CoverGirl lip stain offers a punch of colour without the thick and opaque qualities of traditional lipstick. The pen-style applicator makes it easy to apply, and the price tag isn’t too bad, either.

6. Guerlain Kiss Kiss Lip Lift, $40, available at Sephora. Okay, I know this isn’t technically a lipstick, but if have a signature shade that needs a little help committing to your lips, you need this product. It’s the ultimate lip primer that will lock in your colour and prevent bleeding, feathering, and lipstick transfer. I know it’s pricey, but I promise it’s worth the investment.

Calgary Beauty Jobs – Brush Up

Wednesday, December 26th, 2012

I was raised in a hands on home: we spent many afternoons finger painting, many dinners sans utensils, often licking the corn on the cob seasoning off our fingers after, and baking was often done mixing ingredients with our hands. To this day, I prefer to pick up a drumstick and hold a slice of pizza rather than a fork and knife, but makeup application is one thing I prefer not to use my hands for (after all, they’re often sticky from always eating with them!). Makeup brushes are designed for easier application, a more seamless, flawless result, and allow for precision of how much of the product is going where. These magic wands (ok, brushes) help beautify my face on the daily.

I am a firm believer and a big fan of highlighter. Even if I’m running out of the house to grab a coffee I would choose to highlight my face over using mascara, which clearly indicates my true feelings as I am crazy about big, bold lashes (more on that later). I love powder highlighter equally as much as I love a liquid or cream highlighter, and I rotate between the three formulas depending on how apparent I want the highlighting to be. Regardless of formula, I always apply it with Sephora’s own fan brush. It perfectly blends the shimmering streaks into the high planes of my face and allows for subtle accenting. My better half refers to highlighter as war paint before I whip out the fan brush, and always compliments my glowing complexion after blending. Enough said!
(Sephora Pro Fan Brush #65, $32)

The only makeup that rivals my love of highlighter is my love of bronzer. I am crazy about bronzers (so much so that above mentioned better half doesn’t even ask about the shimmery fingerprints all over the apartment anymore) and always feel instantly refreshed and waaaaaay prettier the instant I brush some on. Contouring the face and giving the complexion some depth and glowiness is achieved, pronto, with bronzers, but the wrong brush can make the skin look muddy and even dull. Bobbi Brown’s amazingly super soft, rounded, smooth brush ensures even application and a natural, radiant result that will have people guessing if your glow is faux. (Bobbi Brown Bronzing Brush, $60, available at Sephora)

Any product that is multi-purpose and helps keep my crammed makeup shelves clutter free wins points for me. When both purposes work superbly, like Stila’s double sided eye makeup brush, it earns permanent valuable makeup real estate space. One side of this brush perfectly distributes eyeshadow, with the ability to build coverage, while the other smaller, tapered side is used for accurate eyeliner application, either wet or dry. Love a smudgier, sexier look? Piece of cake – just use the eyeliner brush dry and smudge away. Wink, wink! (Stila #15 Double Sided Brush, $45, at Sephora)
