Beauty Jobs – Everything You Need to Know About Colour Correcting

Tuesday, March 15th, 2016

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs Inspiration Image

Colour correcting is much more than just applying foundation to even out your skin tone. It involves using a variety of different colours to help “cancel” out certain pigments in the skin. These products can come in various forms, ranging from powders to cream concealers. Once you have found your skin concern and the corresponding colour correcting shade, you will be able to achieve a flawless complexion!

Here is a quick guide to colour correction!

If your skin gets red due to acne or sensitivity, use green to help reduce the look of it!

1. Lancome Miracle CC Cushion- Color Correcting Primer in 01 Green, $45, available at Sephora

2. Maybelline Cover Stick Concealer in Deep Mint, $6, available at Walmart

Put a pink or purple colour corrector all over the face to correct dullness or sallowness! Your skin will instantly look more radiant and neutral in colour.

3 4

3. COVER FX Correct Stick in Lavender, $24, available at Sephora

4. Almay Smart Shade CC Luminous Primer, $15, available at Walmart

Use a peach tone colour corrector to reduce the look of dark spots and dark circles on a light-medium skin tone. For those with deeper skin tones, use an orange colour corrector.

5 6

5. Smashbox Color Correcting Stick in Peach, $27, available at Sephora

6. Almay Smart Shade CC Concealer + Brightener, $10, available at Walmart

Use a yellow colour corrector all over the face to help brighten the complexion by reducing the look of purple/blue pigments in the skin. These pigments are often present due to visible veins and dark circles.

7. SEPHORA COLLECTION Bright Set Pressed Finishing Powder, $20, available at Sephora

8. NYX Cosmetics Color Correcting Powder in Banana, $12, available at NYX Cosmetics

Beauty Jobs – Blue in The Afternoon

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs

inspo [528733]

I’ll be the first to admit that wearing colourful makeup is scary.  I generally opt for browns, with hints of mauves and pinks, and the occasional dark purple.  While something as vibrant as blue seems off-putting, especially for work, I’m going to show you some products that are incredibly wearable, and you’ll be wishing you found these ages ago!

1 [528728] 3 [528729]

My first tip is to switch up your black liner for a navy one.  Using navy eyeliner is a very easy change, but will make a big impact, especially for those with blue eyes.  Something like the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye pencil in Sabbath is a perfect option, as is the Yves Saint Laurent Couture Kajal 3 in 1 Khol eyeliner.  The Rimmel scandaleyes also has an amazing navy called Deep Blue if you are looking for a more budget friendly option.

Keep the lower lash line neutral.  I was watching one of Sharon Farrell’s video where she created an amazing purple eye look, but I felt like the key to pulling it off was in her use of brown eyeshadow on the lower lash line.  Or, the opposite would work well.  That is to say, keep the mobile lid natural, and add some blue liner and shadow to the bottom lash line. This will give the illusion of a more wearable palette, but with the added “umpth” that the blue has to offer.

4 [528730]5 [528731] 6 [528732]

Palettes like the Kat Von D Mi Vida Loca Remix Eyeshadow palette, Smashbox Double Exposure Travel Palette, or the Urban Decay Spectrum Eyeshadow Palette have great colour payoff, and have the perfect mixture between blue and brown.

The trick is, like wearing any other vibrant look, keep everything else neutral.  Don’t wear a competing red lip, but instead opt for a browny-pink nude lip.  Wearing colour can be so much fun, but the trick is to give off the overall illusion of a neutral look.

1. Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil, $24, available at Sephora

2. Yves Saint Lauren couture Kajal 3 in 1 Khol eyeliner, $39, available at Sephora or Murale

3. Rimmel Scandaleyes, available at Shoppers Drug Mart

4. Kat Von D Mi Vida Loca Remix Eyeshadow Palette, $71, available at Sephora

5. Smashbox Double Exposure Travel Palette, $26, available at Sephora

6. Urban Decay Spectrum Eyeshadow Palette, $65, available at Sephora

Beauty Jobs – Combination Nation

Tuesday, July 21st, 2015

When the sun is shining, and the temperatures are soaring, the last thing that most of us want to do is spend hours getting ready in the morning when we could be enjoying the outdoors. That’s why finding versatile products that can be used on the go is essential for making the most out of summer.

The Stila Convertible Colours are amazing products for summer time.  This creamy product works just as well on the cheeks as it does on the lips, and can easily be layered throughout the day to add more intensity.  As they are available in 6 shades, you are sure to find your perfect match.  Similarly are the Bobbi Brown Pot Rouges, or the Revlon PhotoReady Cream Blushes.

Tinted moisturizers and BB creams are also essential items for the summer.  Many contain SPF, some as high as SPF 50, like the Dr. Jart Premium Beauty Balm with SPF 45. This is great for those of us who are a little forgetful when it comes to applying sunblock in the morning.  Many also have colour correcting and soothing properties, like the SmashboxCamera Ready CC Cream, which will help your complexion if you do happen to suffer from a sunburn, especially if you begin suffering from sun spots later in life.

If you’re going away for the weekend, or plan on changing your look up during the course of the day, it’s great to keep something like the TarteColoured Clay Bronzer Blush on hand.  This multi-coloured face product can be used for many purposes.  You can focus the brush on the pink parts for a shimmery blush, the darker brown sports for a contour and bronzer, or the individual “petal” shapes can be used for a multidimensional eyeshadow look.

While many of these items are made for multiple uses, it’s always good to have some tricks in your repertoire for emergency situations.  In a pinch, you can use a lipstick as a blush.  Just dab some onto your finger, and pat it onto you cheeks.  And remember, the creamier the lipstick, the more smoothly it will apply.  Bronzers and highlights can be used as eyeshadows, and can be applied with fingers if need be.  Lastly, if you have a small tipped brush, mascaras can be turned into eyeliners.  Just tap your brush onto the top of the mascara wand, wipe off any excess, and apply as usual.

1. Stila Convertible Colour, C$33, available at Sephora

2. Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge, C$30, available at select Shoppers Drug Marts and Murale

3. Revlon PhotoReady Cream blush, available at Shoppers Drug Marts

4. Dr. Jart Premium Beauty Balm, C$48, available at Sephora

5. Smashbox Camera Ready CC Cream, C$50, available at Sephora

6. TarteColoured Clay Bronzer Blush, C$36, available at Sephora

Beauty Jobs – Pimple Extraction

Wednesday, March 5th, 2014

Screen shot 2014-03-04 at 9.30.42 PM

When it comes to pimple popping, you know the rule: Don’t even think about it! But if you’re like me, leaving those pesky blemishes alone is easier said than done. When you need to send those bad boys packing, take the road best traveled with these helpful tips and tricks:

Perricone MD Hypoallergenic Gentle Cleanser

Prep by washing your face with a mild cleanser (we recommend: Perricone MD Hypoallergenic Gentle Cleanser, $48 available at Sephora), then hold a wet, steamy facecloth on the pimple for at least 30 seconds to soften skin and open the pores. Remove only if the whitehead is close to the surface. If the blemish is deep below the skin surface or inflamed, it’s best to leave it alone. Trust me.

cotton swabs

2. Using cotton swabs on each side of the pimple, press gently. If the slight pressure has no effect, it’s not ready to open up.

Step 3 Collage

3. Smooth a thin layer of a spot treatment containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, which helps zap bacteria.  We recommend: Philosophy Clear Days Ahead Fast-Acting Salicylic Acid Acne Spot Treatment, $19 available at Sephora or Murad Acne Spot Fast Fix, $19 available at Sephora.

Step 4 Collage

4. When the blemish is healing, cover up with a concealer stick, which tends to be longwearing, and set with a pressed powder. We recommend: Smashbox Camera Ready Full Coverage Concealer, $23 available at Sephora; Make Up For Ever HD Pressed Powder, $41 available at Sephora.

Esthetician Jobs – Anne Hathaway

Friday, August 23rd, 2013

rsz_anne-hathaway-makeup-2013-met-ballsmashbox Say what you want about Anne Hathaway’s latest cropped blonde ‘do, but she’s been nailing some pretty trendy eye makeup that’s enough to make me forgive her for it. We can all take a cue from Anne on how to incorporate some colour into our upcoming fall makeup routine. By using the Smashbox, Fade to Black Photo Shop Eye Palette, ($42, available at Sephora.) start with the lightest shade on the inner corner to highlight and brighten and gradually fade to the darkest in the outer corner to contour and deepen the shades for the perfect night-time smoky eye with the right amount of colour. The range of finishes from matte to shimmer in this palette makes these shadows seriously versatile. If there’s one new palette to invest in this season, keep your makeup bag on trend with a variation purples.

Calgary Beauty Jobs – 3 Steps to Treat Dark Circles

Tuesday, June 4th, 2013

Whether you need a quick fix or long-lasting results, there is a cure for dark under-eye circles.

The first step to treating those dark, puffy bags under the eyes is tightening up the skin using a product that treats and protects the under eye area. Philosophy Eye Hope Advanced Anti-Aging Eye Cream ($66) contains antioxidants to fully protect against future damage, as well as beta-glucan to decrease the look of wrinkles and even out skin tone. This product is a great right before bed so its powerful formula can take effect overnight.

Instead of using your foundation primer under your eyes, try using Smashbox Photo Finish More Than Primer Dark Spot Correcting ($55) before applying any makeup. Just like the name says, this all-in-one product is a primer and dark spot corrector making this the perfect base for your concealer. The silky smooth formula visibly reduces the appearance of lines and pores while creating the perfect canvas for your makeup.

Now it’s makeup time! Go with a full coverage concealer like the Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer ($37). This oil-free, full coverage waterproof concealer is great for those long summer days. The surprisingly light and creamy consistency contains a high concentration of pigments that stay put, making it perfect for use on the face, especially under the eyes. When choosing the colour for your concealer, go with a colour that contains a yellow base and is slightly lighter than your natural skin tone. This will eliminate the dark circles and instantly brighten.

Montreal Beauty Jobs – Barely There Makeup

Friday, April 5th, 2013

This season, my motto is “bare is better” when it comes to beauty. The neutral look has been seen all over the runways and is a trend that can take you from day to night.

To achieve sheer beauty you have to go skin deep, and that means finding the perfect moisturizer, primer, and foundation. Now I know what you’re thinking: that’s a lot of product to be wearing in the heat. So skip the 3 step routine and substitute with the perfect BB cream or tinted moisturizer. For great coverage with a matte finish, try Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream SPF 35 ($39, available at Sephora). The multitasking formula moisturizes while controlling your skins natural oils and contains SPF to protect against the suns harsh rays. If you’re looking for a more lightweight product, try Laura Mercier’s Tinted Illumination tinted moisturizer to give your skin a dewy fresh glow. And instead of caking on heavy powder, finish off with a lightweight translucent powder.

Soft neutral shadows are a staple for spring, that being said, so is the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette ($50, available at Sephora). Containing 12 shimmering shades, you can achieve a subtle day look, a smoky night out look and everything in between. After applying your shadows, smudge a soft brown pencil liner only on your upper lash line. Curl your lashes and apply a volumizing mascara, pulling your lashes outward to open up your eyes.

I like to see a neutral eye paired with shades of soft pinks or taupe on the lips. A sheer lipstick or gloss is a perfect compliment to a natural makeup look and is flattering on every skin tone while looking youthful and fresh. Find a tube you love like the Nars Satin Lipstick in Honolulu Honey ($26, available at Sephora) and never leave home without it this spring.

If you’re like me, your nail colour will change according to your outfit. Such a hassle trying to match! So, go nude and you cant go wrong. I’ve been loving the OPI ‘My Vampire is Buff’ polish for that perfect soft colour with a bit of sparkle.

Now that you’ve got all your “bare essentials” you’re ready for spring!
