Makeup Jobs – Tickled Pink

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

When a cold season sneaks up on us (yet again,) we always resort to wearing bitter colours to match the bitter winds. But this season, change that up and dare yourself to hit the high notes with hot pink! This ultra-fun new beauty trend that popped up on runways from Chanel to Viktor & Rolf gives a whole new meaning to coming down with a case of pink eye. If you’re makeup routine is craving a little adventure try sweeping some punchy pink pigment across your lids like Makeup Forever’s shadow in #53 or M.A.C’s pigment powder in Magenta. For ladies that like to be the life of the party, how about rocking a pair of Shu Uemura fuchsia faux lashes? Prefer a more subtle touch? Maybe Urban Decay’s Heavy Metal glitter eyeliner in Catfight is your way to go. So have some fun and make this season a new start, because this bold look that’ll leave you pretty in pink is not for the faint of heart.

Vancouver Beauty Jobs – Foolproof, Smudge-Proof Lipstick

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012

Who wants to spend every minute checking to see if their lipstick has migrated? Following these five steps will ensure that your pigment stays put.

Step 1: Prep.
Dry, flaky lips and lipstick are an awful pairing. To avoid this, use a lip scrub. You can try a product like Bliss Fabulips Sugar Lip Scrub, or make your own out of brown sugar and coconut oil. Both smell delicious, only the latter is edible. (Fabulips Sugar Lip Scrub, $20, available at Sephora)

Step 2: Apply.
Lip brushes are fine and dandy, but I’m all about applying my lipstick straight from the tube, nice and thick. Take special care to stay within the lines, especially around your cupid’s bow and the corners of your mouth. If you’re looking for a great fall shade, I recommend NARS Afghan Red, which is actually the first lipstick I ever owned (Sailor Moon Crescent Wand lipstick notwithstanding.) (NARS Afghan Red, $30, available at Sephora, $30)

Step 3: Dab.
Put a tissue between your lips and press down. (No teeth though!) A lot of the pigment should transfer onto the tissue, leaving a wonky lip print. Next, dab on another coat of lipstick and repeat. Then, put a finger in your mouth and pull it out to remove the extra lipstick that would otherwise end up on your teeth.

Step 4: Powder.
I never pass on the chance to share this tip. Use a big, fluffy brush to dust translucent powder—like Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder—over your painted lips, then voila! Smudge-free lips. (Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder, $35, available at Sephora)

Hairstylist Jobs – Fresh Foundations

Monday, August 20th, 2012

We are spoiled for choice when it comes to foundation: all the major cosmetic lines have a range of different formulations to choose from, and they are continually rolling out new technology to keep us looking our best! Take the time to find a perfect match by testing several colors on your jawline; step into the natural light to find the tone that disappears into your skin and you are good to go. Whether your complexion is oily, normal, mature or dry, we have got you “covered” with the latest formulations to add to your beauty routine.

1. Yves Saint Laurent Le Teint Touche Eclat, $55 available at Sephora: This water based formulation uses light reflecting technology to blur imperfections and is ideal for all skin types.
2. L’Oreal Magic Smooth Souffle, $17, available at London Drugs: A mousse formulation that delivers a medium coverage with a powdery finish and is ideal for combination skin types.
3. Tarte Maracuja Miracle, $42, available at Sephora: Full of calming and nourishing ingredients, this long wearing foundation hydrates and delivers a fuller coverage making it ideal for mature or aging skin.
4. Urban Decay Naked Skin, $34, available at Sephora: Buildable and lightweight with light reflecting properties, this semi-matte formulation is great for oily skin.
5. bareMinerals READY, $29, available at Sephora: A mineral-based powder formula with plenty of light reflecting power tools perfect for all skin types.

Hair Stylist Jobs – Lasting Impressions

Thursday, August 16th, 2012

Style Inspiration: Emilio Pucci Spring 2012 Ready-to-Wear, courtesy of style.com

I’m a big eye makeup fanatic: a sultry smoky eye, colourful liner, an ombré of gorgeous shadow hues – I love it all! What I’m not a fan of? Spending an hour in the mirror perfecting my makeup as if I’m Michelangelo and my face is the Sistine Chapel, only for my masterpiece to melt away under the summer heat. While a bit of smudging and creasing makes for a sexy eye look, too much can end up looking like an art project gone wrong! Fortunately, we have put together some key products that will keep your eye makeup intact in the heat:

1. Nars Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base, $29
A silicone-based eye primer is a great base to help shadow stay put and also amplify pigment. A light layer of concealer will work too, but avoid oil-based formulas, especially if you have oily eyelids.

2. Make Up Forever HD Microfinish Powder, $35, available at Sephora
Add a light dusting of translucent powder to the eye area to mattify and add an extra layer of hold. I love Make Up Forever’s HD Microfinish Powder – it offers an invisible veil of fine powder without looking chalky.

3. Smashbox Limitless 15 Hour Wear Cream Shadow, $19 US
Cream eye shadows are great long-lasting formulas that wear well in the sticky heat and have intense payoff. Wear solo or underneath powdered shadow for more intense colour.

4. Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Liner, $23, available at Sephora
Liquid liner: melt-proof, smudge-proof, and in most cases, water-proof. Need I say more?

5. CoverGirl LashBlast Length Water Resistant Mascara, $12, available at Shoppers Drug Mart
Opt for water-resistant mascara instead of waterproof formulas – it does the same job but is a lot gentler on lashes upon removal.

6. Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray, $35, available at Sephora

I’m a huge fan of Urban Decay’s All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray – a pure miracle worker, proving tried and true even under the scorching Vegas heat (if that doesn’t validate it, I don’t know what does!). Lightly mist over your face a couple of times and you’re set!

Hairstylist Jobs – Creative Colouring

Friday, August 10th, 2012

Summer is the season of bronzer, but while it’s easy to treat it like blush—that is, to brush it along our cheekbones and call it a day—this product can be used in a number of ways to make sure that you really get your money’s worth… even after Summer ends!

1. Bronzer as self-tanner: This tip, surprisingly, came from my brother. Scraping off a bit of shimmery bronzer—NARS Bronzing Powder in Laguna ($34) is a classic—-thoroughly mix it with a handful of body lotion. Then slather the mixture onto your limbs for a natural glow.

2. Bronzer as contouring powder: A shimmer-less bronzer like Hoola by Benefit Cosmetics ($36) can double as a contouring powder. Use an angled contour brush and go to town on the hollows of your cheeks to define cheekbones, or use a little around your nose to give the area a more delicate, smaller illusion.

3. Bronzer as eye shadow: I am a huge fan of cream cosmetics because of their staying power and how simple they are to use. A cream bronzer like Vapour Organic Beauty Solar Translucent Bronzer ($34) can be used as a subtle, lightweight eye shadow that will stay put. Be sure to warm up the product on the back of hand first. That way, it’ll be easier to apply.

4. Bronzer as powder: This one only applies to the naturally bronzy or thoroughly tanned. A trip to Istanbul, time spent up North and generally existing through this sunny summer has gotten me to point where my go-to bronzer, MAC Mineralize Skinfinish ($29), is close enough to my skin tone that I can use it as an illuminating, sheer powder foundation when skin is looking less than perfect. Make sure your bronzer isn’t too dark before you try this at home.

Small-sized beauty products that can really deliver are an essential part of any travel kit, especially since we’re smack dab in the middle of summer and prime vacation time. Whether on a road trip or a long haul flight, these travel friendly beauty gems will keep you looking and feeling fresh from door to door.

1. bliss lemon+sage body butter, $6, available at Sephora: Travel can often make your hands feel dry and dull, so slathering on this rich and fresh scented lotion will bring both your hands and senses back to life.

2. Ole Henriksen Truth To Go Wipes, $15, available at Sephora: Spending an extended period of time in a car or plane can make us feel grimy so I love using these wipes to freshen up my makeup, hands and even feet!

3. Laura Mercier Flawless Face Kit, $65, available at Sephora: This little kit contains everything you need to arrive to your destination looking flawless including a concealer, primer, tinted moisturizer and various tools to touch-up any travel mishaps.

4. Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder, $19, available at Sephora: Bring the life back to your tresses with a dry shampoo. This tinted hair powder absorbs excess oil and gives you that “just washed” look and feel while bringing extra volume to the roots; instant polish!
