Beauty Jobs – No Doubt About It

Friday, October 11th, 2013

gwen stefani OPI

With all the amazing celebrities lending their name to mega nail polish brand OPI, it was only a matter of time before they scooped up someone as unique and funky as Gwen Stefani.

After the 2013 Met Gala’s theme “Punk Chaos to Couture”, OPI felt inspired to create a nail polish line that would capture “the role of music as a major influence in fashion” – enter, Gwen Stefani.

It’s no surprise to me that Gwen was their next pick to endorse the line. From her trademark platinum hair to scarlet lips, the distinct personality is a win-win for OPI.  As excited as I was to hear Gwen had joined the team, I was much more eager to learn what some of the nail polish names would be! OPI name dropped a few including Love.Angel.Music.Baby, Push and Shove, and Over-and-Over A Gwen.

If you are like me and prefer a bigger bang for your buck, you are in luck! OPI also mentioned that they will be selling a gift set within the Gwen Stefani line that will include black Swarovski crystals, silver, gold and pewter studs, and nail glue! This collaboration will not be unveiled until January of 2014. On the upside, these are perfect items to spend your Christmas money and gift cards on!  Voila, A silver lining!

Montreal Beauty Jobs – Barely There Makeup

Friday, April 5th, 2013

This season, my motto is “bare is better” when it comes to beauty. The neutral look has been seen all over the runways and is a trend that can take you from day to night.

Skin
To achieve sheer beauty you have to go skin deep, and that means finding the perfect moisturizer, primer, and foundation. Now I know what you’re thinking: that’s a lot of product to be wearing in the heat. So skip the 3 step routine and substitute with the perfect BB cream or tinted moisturizer. For great coverage with a matte finish, try Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream SPF 35 ($39, available at Sephora). The multitasking formula moisturizes while controlling your skins natural oils and contains SPF to protect against the suns harsh rays. If you’re looking for a more lightweight product, try Laura Mercier’s Tinted Illumination tinted moisturizer to give your skin a dewy fresh glow. And instead of caking on heavy powder, finish off with a lightweight translucent powder.

Eyes
Soft neutral shadows are a staple for spring, that being said, so is the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette ($50, available at Sephora). Containing 12 shimmering shades, you can achieve a subtle day look, a smoky night out look and everything in between. After applying your shadows, smudge a soft brown pencil liner only on your upper lash line. Curl your lashes and apply a volumizing mascara, pulling your lashes outward to open up your eyes.

Lips
I like to see a neutral eye paired with shades of soft pinks or taupe on the lips. A sheer lipstick or gloss is a perfect compliment to a natural makeup look and is flattering on every skin tone while looking youthful and fresh. Find a tube you love like the Nars Satin Lipstick in Honolulu Honey ($26, available at Sephora) and never leave home without it this spring.

Nails
If you’re like me, your nail colour will change according to your outfit. Such a hassle trying to match! So, go nude and you cant go wrong. I’ve been loving the OPI ‘My Vampire is Buff’ polish for that perfect soft colour with a bit of sparkle.

Now that you’ve got all your “bare essentials” you’re ready for spring!

Toronto Beauty Jobs – Take It All Off

Friday, March 29th, 2013

Glitter! Texture! Bold colour! There is so much going on in the nail world right now, I’m craving a moment of silence in the midst of this screamingly loud movement. I adore an avant garde velvet manicure as much as the next unique-tipped gal, but for those days where you’d like a little more subtlety, nothing beats a classic nude nail. These are my go-to nudes for when a classic manicure is completely necessary.

Dior Vernis Nail Lacquer in Safari Beige, $24, available at Sephora

Butter London 3 Free Nail Lacquer in Yummy Mummy, $18, available at Sephora

Beauty Jobs – Spring-Dipped Manicures

Monday, February 4th, 2013

The nail art movement continues to gain momentum and popularity with every passing season, and innovations such as nail stickers and magnetic polish are introduced to the market fast and furiously. The latest? A textured manicure. Leading British nail polish brand Ciaté debuted their caviar and velvet manicure sets last year, and this season, OPI and Zoya have both followed suit and created a rough textured, glittery polish. The best part? Inability of washing dishes – hey, it’ll ruin your gorgeous manicure!

OPI Liquid Sand Collection
As a part of the Mariah Carey collection for spring 2013, OPI introduced four ‘stage’ shades, which is appropriate as they really stand out! The fine shimmering polishes dry to a matte, pebbled finish, and each of the formulas feature different glitter pieces in them for added dimension. (Photos courtesy of ChalkboardNails, NailderellaNails and StephanieNguyen)

Zoya Pixie Dust
Affectionately named Pixie Dust, Zoya introduced the same look with a more whimsical feel. “Infused with magic and wonder”, Zoya’s formula comes in six shades and has a sugared finish. Yum! (Photos courtesy of BeautyOfASite, AngelicaBrigade and Zoya)

Vancouver Beauty Jobs – Marbled Nail Art

Monday, January 28th, 2013

Nail polish is definitely a weakness of mine; it’s an easy, inexpensive, and temporary way to incorporate trends into my look without much commitment. Whether it’s colour-blocking, mixed prints, or a Pantone colour of the year, chances are you can find a nail art interpretation. One unique manicure that has captured my interest is the marbling effect I’ve seen all over Tumblr and Pinterest. The usual way to get the marble look is by dropping polish into a cup of water, swirling with a toothpick, then dipping your finger carefully through the floating polish. Somehow, your nails are meant to emerge coated in a cool and unique pattern. Generally, mine turned out a sticky mess. After trying and trying (and failing miserably) to recreate the look for myself, I’ve finally discovered a fool-proof way to achieve it! The best part? You’ve already got the secret tool tucked away in a kitchen drawer.

1) Assemble your key players. Choose two complementary polishes you want for your marbled look. Don’t forget to include a high quality base coat and shiny top coat for prepping and finishing! The secret weapon? Good old saran wrap.

2) After filing, smoothing, and allowing your base coat to dry, apply your first colour. I used two coats of OPI Panda-monium Pink. Let it dry completely. (Sally Hansen Triple Strong base coat, $7, available at NailPolishCanada ; OPI Panda-monium Pink nail polish, $6, available at Amazon)

3) Tear 10 small pieces of saran wrap – one for each nail. Coat each nail with your second colour, doing one hand at a time. Let the polish dry until tacky, not quite dry, then you’re ready for your saran wrap. (American Apparel L’Esprit Nail Polish, $6)

4) One by one, press on a piece of saran wrap to your nail, bunching the plastic slightly. Removing the saran wrap will pull a bit of the top layer of polish away with it. I had the most success when pulling the saran away quickly, almost like I was removing a wax strip (except way less painful!).

5) On a couple nails, I pulled away a bit too much polish and my bare nail showed through. On those ones, I dabbed a few drops of polish to fill in the gaps. (Sally Hansen No More Mistakes Manicure Clean-Up Pen, $6, available at Amazon)

6) Once nails are dry, do two coats of a shiny top coat. I like Sally Hansen No Chip Acrylic top coat because it’s glossy and strong. The top coat will help blend and smooth out the marble effect. Fix up any smudges with a Q-tip soaked in remover or Sally Hansen No More Mistakes manicure clean-up pen. (Sally Hansen No Chip Acrylic top coat, $5, available at Amazon)

7) Admire your quick, easy, stylish nail art!

Esthetician Jobs – Outrageous Beauty for Halloween

Monday, October 29th, 2012

The best time of year to experiment with bold makeup is Halloween. Throw on all of the blue lipstick, glitter and tacky nail applique’s you want! Usually we’re a firm believer of less is more but when it comes to Halloween we think it’s totally okay to break all of the rules. There’s still a few more days worth of Halloween parties to attend and if you don’t have a costume we have some bold beauty choices to get you inspired.

1. Paperself Eyelashes, $9, available at Sephora
These lashes are the perfect accessory to a simple peacock costume. Really the only time you can pull of a lash this extravagant is at a costume party. There’s plenty of variety in the designs including deer, butterfly and an under the sea theme.

2. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in ‘True Cyan Blue’, $16, available at Sephora
OCC Lip Tars are packed with pigment and come in every shade imaginable. True Cyan Blue would definitely get some questionable looks on any random day, but we think it would be pretty awesome for a smurfette themed costume.

3. Make Up Forever Glitters, $14
Halloween is always a great excuse to load on the glitter. Make Up Forever’s potted glitter in Metallic Teal Glitter is the perfect shade for a mermaid look. Make sure to apply a primer specifically for glitter before your application, this will ensure that you don’t end up looking like a complete disco ball. These glitters are so pretty that we wish it was acceptable to wear every day.

4. Sephora by O.P.I Trend Tips, $12
Go all out with cheetah sparkle nail stickers to match your entire costume. These appliques by Sephora by O.P.I are simple to apply and can be customised to fit your nail shape with just a few snips.

Esthetician Jobs – Ravishing Red Nails

Monday, October 15th, 2012

The red manicure has been around for decades; beginning with Cleopatra in the ancient Egyptian times, the bolder the crimson shade, the more power a woman was said to possess. Cut to 2012 and we still can’t get enough of this bold lacquer shade. From cherry red, or a classic crimson, to deep burgundy, these red polish picks are perfect for fall and the upcoming holiday season.

Apply any of these shades like a pro by starting with freshly washed hands. Because red polishes can often stain the nail bed, use a base coat to protect before getting started. Working quickly, apply a thin coat of the pretty polish in as few strokes as possible, avoiding the cuticle and sides of the nail. Go in for a second thin coat after the first coat has dried to cut down on setting time and finish up with a clear topcoat to avoid chips and enhance a glossy shine. Correct any mishaps with a cotton swab dipped in nail polish remover and you’ll be ready to ravish.

1. Deborah Lippmann It’s Raining Men, $20, also available at BeautyMark
2. OPI The Thrill of Brazil, $11, also available at London Drugs
3. Essie Fifth Avenue, $10, available at London Drugs
4. Rimmel London Lasting Finish Pro Nail Enamel, $5, available at Well.ca or London Drugs
5. OPI Chick Flick Cherry, $11, also available at London Drugs
6. Essie Fishnet Stockings, $10

Calgary Beauty Jobs – Silver Belle

Monday, October 8th, 2012

When it comes to favourite metals, silver is definitely top of the list. Both ethereal and daring, silver has a striking, cool factor that commands attention – we love that! Rock n’ Roll icon Debbie Harry proved metallic makeup is an edgy, yet wearable look. And as we know, what goes around comes around; we’re seeing this trend back in full force this fall with different variations of intensity. When it comes to metallic makeup, the eyes definitely have it. After all, let’s face it, metallic face makeup is best left for sci-fi movies and our favourite classic characters (hello, Tin Man!) But mega-metallic silver nails have also been a hit this season – and we’re happy to follow suit! Desire to be a silver siren? Here are our top looks to score this season:

Go bold with a gunmetal smoky eye: Line eyes with a metallic pencil (we love Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Eyes), smudging into your lash line. Sweep a loose silver shadow on the lids, diffusing it from the lashes up to the brows. (Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes Eye Pencil in ‘Metallic Silver’, $18, available at Sephora)

Intensify the metallic look by dampening your shadow brush and dipping into a wet/dry shadow to create a wash of rich, concentrated colour onto eyelids. (Laura Mercier Baked Eye Colour, $22 available at Sephora)

If subtle is more your style, opt for a shimmery silver shadow that allows you to build up colour as desired. This Joe Fresh classic smoky eye shadow quad is a staple for every gal’s beauty stash. (Joe Fresh Eye Shadow Quad in ‘Classic Smoky’, $10)

For a pop of striking colour on lids, channel the 60’s look by keeping lids bare and tracing a thick, dramatic line of silver liquid liner, drawing a flick at the corners to create a flirty cat-eye look. (Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner, $19, available at Sephora)

Of course, the metallic silver nail is one of the hottest looks to sport this fall. Let your tips shine with a richly opaque lacquer such as Revlon’s Top Speed Fast Dry Nail Enamel in ‘Sterling’. Or for a quick ‘no-dry’ alternative, opt for mega-glittery nail lacquer stripes that are easy to apply and peel off – perfect for last-minute parties! (Revlon Top Speed Fast Dry Nail Enamel in ‘Sterling’, $9, available at Shoppers Drug Mart or Sephora by OPI Trend Tips in ‘Silver Metallic’, $12)

Makeup Artist Jobs – Nail It

Monday, August 6th, 2012

Nail polish is something that can make you feel just that: polished! Whether it’s on your toes, fingers or both, it shows that you take that extra little step to perfect your look. As polish trends change much like style trends, I always keep the classic basics stocked in my beauty kit, and rotate though my favourite pinks, reds and vampy shades reflective of the current season. To spice it up, top off any polish color with a little gold sparkle – I love using this technique on a feature nail to create a point of visual interest in my look, and take the manicure to the next level. Nail it this fall with the go-to colors we are all coveting and you’ll be polished in no time!
