Beauty Jobs – Pore Control

Monday, May 6th, 2013

I have a love-hate relationship with my magnifying mirror. While this handy tool allows a zoomed-in view ideal for accurate tweezing and mega-precise makeup application, the up-close-and-personal scrutiny of my pores can be daunting. Blemishes and blackheads due to clogged pores is a common woe for many. Blackheads are the result of clogged oil and debris that is oxidized and darkened within pores – yuck! And while a weekly trip to the facialist sure ain’t in the budget, unclogging pores is totally achievable at home with these helpful steps:

1. Scrub it up: Break down sebum that gets stuck in the pores and causes the blackhead. Use a facial scrub that contains 2% or less salicylic acid exfoliator every morning. Allow it to sit on damp skin for about a minute before rinsing – this allows the acid to work its magic. We recommend: Soap & Glory The Greatest Scrub Of All Facial Exfoliator, $18, available at Sephora or Shoppers Drug Mart

2. Extract: Okay, this step might seem a little scary to do solo, but using the proper tools makes it easy and safe for your skin. Don’t even think about using your fingers. After you shower, while skin is still damp, use an extractor tool (we recommend: Sephora Collection 3-in-1 Extractor, $22 available at Sephora) to press down on skin to lift the blackhead out. Follow up with a spot treatment containing benzoyl peroxide (we recommend: Ole Henriksen Roll-On Acne Clearing Solution, $22 available at Sephora).

3. Grab a vacuum: Not your actual vacuum, rather using handy gadgets that act like such for your face that loosen dirt and oil and remove dead skin cells. How clever! We recommend: Bliss Pore-Fector Gadget 3-Piece Kit, $185 available online at www.amazon.ca (this bad-boy uses sonic vibrations to power-wash pores and eliminate impurities) or Rodan + Fields Redefine Macro Exfoliator, $279 available online at www.rodanandfields.com (uses gentle suction to sweep away dead skin cells)

Beauty Jobs – Super Serums

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

I’m serious about serum time. Not only does its feel-good texture evoke a sense of calm, its power-packing, fast absorbing, mega potent formula addresses a whole whack of skin concerns and can dramatically improve problems that will instill a whole other level of calm (and happiness!) when addressing the mirror.

Ole Henriksen Truth Serum Vitamin C Collagen Booster, $60, available at Sephora
Vitamin C, nature’s best brightener and tightener, is this all-natural serum’s star ingredient. An oil free formula, lightening quick absorption and pleasant, non-sticky texture make this serum a dream to use, but its instant and long term effects of radiant and even-toned complexion are what keep me coming back for more.

Dr. Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Bright Skin Tone Correcting Serum, $69
Uneven tone and dark spots, whether caused by UV damage, acne scars or pigmentation, are irritating imperfections that can really drag down an otherwise good complexion. This potent yet formula treats and prevents future damage and is astonishingly effective, imparting even, luminous skin in a few short weeks.

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate, $48
Overnight, cells do the opposite of rest and are hard at work until we awaken. Used at nighttime, this silky serum boosts cells’ reparative abilities and skin is restored from daily aggressors that make us look dull and tired. Waking up never looked so pretty!

Beauty Jobs – Climate Control: Adjusting Skin Care When Travelling

Monday, March 25th, 2013

From humid hot spots to desert locales – there’s a significant difference in weather conditions. Our skin is naturally acclimatized to our home city, which is why new environments tend to throw our moisture levels off. Breakouts, dryness, oil-slick skin can be unwelcomed surprises during our travels (no thanks!)While skin requires a few days to readjust to the current climate, a pro-active approach will help avoid such woes:

PREPARE: Start using products you’ll be taking with you a few days before you leave. Take it easy on drying and irritating ingredients such as retinols or alpha hydroxyl acids and avoid peels and strong facial treatments. Opt for a sulfate-free soap when cleansing your face. Load up on serums and moisturizers that are rich in emollients to boost hydration.

BEACH BABE: While humidity is loved by skin, too much of a good thing can be, well, too much! Hot, humid climates can shift our oil glands into overdrive – keep things under control with a clarifying cleanser to stabilize oil production. To keep skin shine-free day or night, use a mattifying primer under foundation. We recommend: Kate Somerville Detox Daily Cleanser, $32; Urban Decay De-Slick In A Tube Mattifying Gel, $28 available at Sephora.

MOUNTAIN MAVEN: The high altitude means you’re closer to the sun, thus skin is more at risk of sun damage and hyperpigmentation. Protect yourself with a mineral sunscreen, which block UV rays and environmental elements. A protective layer of moisturizer and balm help shield cheeks and lips from harsh winds, which can zap moisture. We recommend: LAVANILA The Healthy Sun Screen SPF 30 Body Cream, $38, available at Sephora; Aquaphor Healing Ointment, $6, available at Shoppers Drug Mart

DESERT ROSE: While you may not experience oily skin, dry heat can zap moisture quickly. Hydration without heaviness is key – opt for a lightweight serum, followed by sunscreen (of course!) We recommend: Kate Somerville Quench Hydrating Face Serum, $65 available at Sephora; Ole Henriksen Protect the Truth Vitamin C SPF 50+ Sunscreen, $35

Hairstylist Jobs – Cleansers To Go

Monday, October 1st, 2012

When I was five years old, I received my first beauty tip from my mum: never go to sleep with your makeup on. Sixteen years later, it is my cardinal rule. No matter how late I walk through the door at night, I always wash my face clean. But this sort of dedication requires its own set of tools. As someone who’s full of life, I have a lot of nights when I am either too exhausted to go through my usual regimen, or cannot be bothered to commute home to my skincare arsenal, so I’ve become something of an expert when it comes to portable cleansers and cleanser alternatives.

Here are my favourites:

1. Olay Clean & Mild Make-Up Remover Cloths, $6, available at Well.ca: These textured sheets are like washcloths you can carry in your purse, except you can toss them out, instead of hanging to dry when you’re done. I usually turn to these before and after workouts, when I’m really looking for that “deep clean” feeling.

2. Ole Henriksen Truth To Go Wipes, $19, available at Sephora: When I feel as though I’m about to pass out from exhaustion, I’ll often reach for pre-moistened wipes like these, even if I’m at home and mere inches away from my usual cleansers. Just one swipe and that mascara is history.

3. Caudalie Cleansing Water, $14, available at Sephora: This gentle, three-in-one product acts as a makeup remover, cleanser and toner. In a perfect world you can just douse a cotton ball with the water and put it on that way, but a wad of toilet paper will also work.

4. Suki To-Go Creamy Foaming Cleanser, $12, available at eBeauty.ca: In case you don’t already know, Suki is known for its all-natural and very luxurious products, and this one is no different. It contains açai oil, an antioxidant, as well as moisturizing coconut oil and shea butter, so your skin is bound to feel soft the next morning. Just because you’re not home, doesn’t mean you can’t pamper yourself!

Small-sized beauty products that can really deliver are an essential part of any travel kit, especially since we’re smack dab in the middle of summer and prime vacation time. Whether on a road trip or a long haul flight, these travel friendly beauty gems will keep you looking and feeling fresh from door to door.

1. bliss lemon+sage body butter, $6, available at Sephora: Travel can often make your hands feel dry and dull, so slathering on this rich and fresh scented lotion will bring both your hands and senses back to life.

2. Ole Henriksen Truth To Go Wipes, $15, available at Sephora: Spending an extended period of time in a car or plane can make us feel grimy so I love using these wipes to freshen up my makeup, hands and even feet!

3. Laura Mercier Flawless Face Kit, $65, available at Sephora: This little kit contains everything you need to arrive to your destination looking flawless including a concealer, primer, tinted moisturizer and various tools to touch-up any travel mishaps.

4. Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder, $19, available at Sephora: Bring the life back to your tresses with a dry shampoo. This tinted hair powder absorbs excess oil and gives you that “just washed” look and feel while bringing extra volume to the roots; instant polish!

Makeup Jobs – Face Mists

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

If you’re feeling dubious about the usefulness of facial mists, you’re certainly not alone. Let’s be honest: they look like fancy, expensive spray bottles full of water (and, in fact, some of them are. See Evian’s Mineral Water Spray.) But in spite of their appearance, facial mists can make a great addition to your makeup kit because of the essentials oils and other actives that they’re infused with. Not only do they set your makeup (adding a bit of moisture on top makes things look more natural and gets rid of that over-done look), they also help to hydrate and soothe your skin throughout the day. Oh, and if you keep yours in the fridge, they can be super refreshing on hot days. Just don’t go overboard with the spritzing. Soaking wet is rarely a good look.

1. For everyone: Caudalie Beauty Elixir, $18, available at Sephora

2. For sensitive skin: Boscia Balancing Facial Tonic, $29, available at Sephora

3. For dry skin: Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray Thirsty Skin Relief, $22 US

4. For mature skin: Ole Henriksen African Red Tea Face Mist, $35, available at Sephora
