Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs

When you think about “Steal Her Look” posts, they generally refer to fashion choices, but their makeup looks can be just as inspirational.  My personal favourite style icon is Olivia Palermo.  She somehow manages to be trendy, classic, and unique, all at the same time. For today’s post, I thought I’d show ways to recreate two of her classic looks.

Natural Glam

Olivia generally opts for a variation of the same style for most of her looks, which includes a cool-toned natural eye; the Urban Decay Naked2 Basics palette is perfect for achieving this.  Apply a mix of frisk and cover (or any mid-toned brown) through the crease with a fluffy blending brush.  Then, with a small rounded brush (like Make Up For Ever 216), apply Primal and Undone right into the crease to define the socket.  Use a dark brown shadow on the lash line, focusing on the outer half.  Finish the look up with lengthening mascara; the new Revlon Super Length mascara is a great option (and really affordable).

GetFileAttachment-2 GetFileAttachment-3 1-revlon+hd+matte+volume+length+mascara-010GetFileAttachment-4 GetFileAttachment-5

To complete the look, apply a peachy-nude lipstick sheerly across the lips. Conveniently, she has her own collection of lipsticks with Ciaté, and Truffle epitomizes her chic look.  Lastly, add some highlighter on the cheeks and brow bone.  Since Olivia seems to opt for matte highlights for her everyday looks, something like the Laura Mercier matte radiance would be a great option.

Date Night

Even on fancier nights out, Olivia seems to keep her eye makeup more or less the same.  Apply the shadows in the same way, but add a liquid liner instead of powder on the lashline.  Wing it out a tiny bit, but don’t go crazy.

The real difference is in the lips.  Olivia does like to try out the occasional red lip.  She generally opts for a warmer toned red, so Nars’ Red Square would be perfect, but if you prefer a more blue-based lip, then Dragon Girl is just as vibrant.

Beauty Jobs – Every Day Essentials

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobsede

Everyone—whether you consider yourself beauty connoisseur or not—has a daily routine. Whether it’s drinking a cup of milk or OJ each morning after getting up, or busting some yoga stretches before you leave the house. For some of us, our routine includes an intensive skincare regimen or a full-face of makeup. However, getting into the habit of caring for your skin or wearing makeup on a regular basis can be daunting. With the amount of products and brands on the market, it can be extremely intimidating to start looking for the products that are right for you and you can incorporate into your routine.

If you’re new to the groove and are clueless about where to start or are simply looking to spend less time getting ready in the morning, these products (and those like them) will get you off in the right direction:

Your skin will be essential to cutting down the time you spend getting ready, so the less skin concerns you have, the better. A good cleanser will keep break-outs at bay and rid the skin of impurities. Unless your skin is extremely dry, it’s usually safe to opt for an oil-free cleanser which will deep-clean, purging the pores of like Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Acne Wash. Those with oily skin tend to fare well with foaming cleansers.

Many people argue that toners are not an absolutely essential part of a good skincare routine, and though I can understand why, I respectfully disagree. Not only will a good toner soften, soothe, balance, and energize your skin, in some cases it can also serve as a mild exfoliant and moisturizer. It pairs perfectly with a cleanser by effectively restoring its pH balance, and prepping the skin for the added hydration of a moisturizer.

Once your skin is cleansed and toned you can finish off your daily skincare routine by moisturizing the face. It is best to choose a lightweight moisturizer which will hydrate the skin without feeling heavy to avoid causing irritation. Ole Henrinksen’s Sheer Transformation moisturizer has a light, whipped consistency which will effectively penetrate the skin without making your pores feel clogged.

For those of us who have a tendency to look sleepy or sickly, mascara is a life-saver. Let’s be real—not everyone has the time or patience to do a full-on eyeshadow look or cat eye in the morning. Mascara however, has the magical ability to make your eyes pop and add extra oomph to your lashes, which can be extra necessary for those who, for a variety of reasons, can sometimes look like we don’t have any. For those who are unsure about how to navigate the exciting world of eye makeup or just don’t have the time in the morning, it’s a pretty solid start.

Since the age of 14, I’ve answered the “what five things would you bring with you on a deserted island?” question the same way and blush has always been number three. In fact, if I had to choose one piece of makeup I could not go without, it would be blush. Why? Because will give your face health and vitality, that’s why! Although I can sometimes resemble the walking dead after a rough night, the right rosy shade of blush made the biggest difference in the world, I looked alive again. Of course, after developing this habit, I quickly discovered a few favourites. Wet n Wild’s Color Icon blushes are one of those hidden treasures I rave about to anyone who will listen. You can never go wrong with that level of pigmentation—especially not for $3 a pop!

Lip Balm

Whether you’re a lipstick person or not, hydrated lips are a must. Chap stick or lip balm are everyone’s best friend, come rain or shine really, but especially during the colder months. What’s even better is because chap stick comes in small packages they really will be your go-to—you can fit them anywhere. And did I mention that the infamous Burt’s Bees also carries tinted lip balms? As if this little gem could get any more awesome!

OPTIONAL: Concealer

If you have skin concerns such as acne, discoloration, or hyper-pigmentation, you might feel as though you need a little extra coverage. While some might opt for a foundation, others find that a good concealer does the trick, looks a bit more natural, and saves them time. In order to make it effective, it’s best to find a concealer with a creamy consistence which distribute evenly, sit well on the skin, and match your complexion. NARS’ uber-popular Radiant Creamy Concealer will do the trick and gets extra brownie points for its wide range of shades.

Beauty Jobs – How to Rock Brown Lipstick

Wednesday, October 14th, 2015

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobscamilabelle [189391]

Inspiration image courtesy of Style Bistro

Much to my delight, brown lipstick is a beauty trend that has managed to carry over from one season to another. With its increased visibility and popularity, many brands have taken notice and not only perfected old favourites, but opted to launch a variety of new shade options.

Unlike many other lipstick colours, brown is surprisingly forgiving. Of course certain shades will look better than others, but your go-to brown lippie will depend completely on the type of look you decide to emulate. Since there are so many flattering shades for everyone, it’s a good idea to choose your favourite(s) according to the environment you’ll find yourself in.

Every Day

revlon_mink [189394] tf_spicebaby [189395]

If you’re looking for office-appropriate, every-day brown lipstick, you may want to consider one with a muted pink or rose undertone for a more “neutral” feel like (1) Revlon’s “Mink” or (2) Too Faced’s Spice Baby.

Special Occasion

ravinraisin [189393] audacious [189388]

Shake it up for a special occasion with a reddy-toned brown to add a bit of subtle sophistication to your look! (3) Wet & Wild’s Ravin’ Raisin is a sensible choice, but (4) NARS’ Deborah is the way to go if you’re feeling daring.

Night Out

bobbi_brown [189390] bite_cognac [189389]

Make a statement with a luscious, high-shine pout like Camila Belle’s with a lipstick like (5) Bobbi Brown’s Blackberry or opt for matte formula like (6) Bite Beauty’s Cognac to complete your look.

Wearing bold lipsticks is not for the faint of heart, but as always my best advice when going where others fear to tread it to stay true to yourself and your style. And to not forget the most important accessory of all of course—confidence!

1. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Mink, C$7 available at Wal-Mart and other drugstores

2. Too Faced La Crème in Spice Baby, C$26 available at Sephora

3. Wet & Wild Megalast Lip Color in Ravin’ Raisin, C$4 available at Wal-Mart and other drugstores

4. NARS Audacious Lipstick in Deborah, C$39 available at the Bay

5. Bobbi Brown Lip Colour in Blackberry, C$32 available at Sephora

6. Bite Matte Lip Crayon in Cognac, C$28 available at Sephora

Beauty Jobs – Office Vampy Vixen

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015

When it comes to beauty and fashion, I’m all for the saying “you do you”.  I don’t think you should ever be afraid to try out different trends or looks.  That being said, some of us work in more conservative environments, where a leopard printed skirt and/or a bright orange lipstick may not be appropriate.  Pulling off less conventional looks isn’t always the easiest task for work, but I’m going to provide a few tips on how to wear a vampy burgundy lip in any workplace.

Tip one: go simple on the eyes.  Nothing screams “walk of shame” quite like a full on smoky eye and dark lip.  For work, you don’t want to have your other makeup competing with the lips, so opt for a lighter base, and some black mascara, with a bit of blush to brighten up your complexion, as dark shades can be very draining.

Tip two: make it matte.  A glossy dark lip will call more attention to the look than a matte formula.  Plus, mattes generally stay in place longer, and require less touch-up’s throughout the day, making them more convenient for a long workday.  No need to worry that your gloss has bled around your mouth during an important presentation.

Tip three: don’t wear loud prints.  Again, wearing a bold, vampy lip with something like a leopard printed dress is more appropriate for clubbing than a cubicle.  Stick with a monochrome outfit in a classic silhouette to keep the focus on the lips.  A burgundy outfit will really complement the lip colour, and de-emphasis the harshness of the lippie.

Beauty Jobs – Summertime Sadness

Monday, August 31st, 2015

There were gorgeous temperatures last week here in Toronto—low 20’s, mostly cloudy, with a light breeze.  I was so excited in preparing for fall that I didn’t even realize the heat wave that enveloped most of the summer was back upon us. However, I realize that most of you are still trying to get the most out of summer before the cooler temps set in.  For today’s post, I thought I’d share some of my top ways to seamlessly transition from summer to fall.

While I generally hate summer, I do love the dewy, pinky hues that compliment the warm weather.  And while bold berry lips and matte foundations seem to be fall staples, they can be a bit harder to pull off.  The problem with trying to transition between seasons is that there is a pretty big juxtaposition between the two trends: luminous to matte, glossy to satin, and natural to berry.

In the early parts of September, opt for satin finishes when it comes to foundation or concealers.  They have a very natural skin-like appearance without looking too caked-on.  Satin finishes are easily the most versatile as well.  You can mix in liquid highlighters or primers, something like the Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow Primer or L’oreal Magic Lumi Light Infusing primer.Or, for when the cooler temps set in, you can add a bit of matteness with a translucent setting powder—something like the Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless pressed powder works well.

1 2

In terms of lip colours, darker lips can be scary, but easily wearable.  Opt for more sheer or glossy formulas for darker colours.  This will give you the appearance of a more seasonal appropriate look without the intensity of a matte finish.  The Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Berry is an essential for fall, but the Narslipgloss in Sixties Fan is another great option.

Lastly, a good way to transition your eye makeup to the next season is to deepen up the light browns and pinks you used throughout summer.  Colours like Mac Cranberry and Embark are great plumy reddish toned shades.  These will pair perfectly with a nude or pink summertime lip, as the cooler and pink undertones of the shadows will compliment the lip perfectly.

Beauty Jobs – On Trend: “Baking” Your Makeup to Perfection

Wednesday, August 19th, 2015

Inspiration image courtesy of Instagram.

2015 has been the year of the beauty trend, with a particular emphasis on complexion. From highlighting and contouring to strobing, “baking” is another way to get the flawless makeup finish you crave. Baking makeup is a simple process which involves keeping translucent setting powders on the highlighted points of the face for a prolonged period of time (usually about 10 minutes or so). What this does is ensure that your complexion products like your foundation, concealer, highlight and contour are “cooked” into place, prolonging the wear and further helping to blend all of the products together. The result is a flawless, airbrushed finish a-la Kim Kardashian West.

If you’re going to bake your makeup, it’s a good idea to begin the process with skin that’s very well hydrated, as the translucent powder is likely to give your skin a super matte finish which may be unflattering if you have textured skin.

Here are some of the products guaranteed to perfect your baking:

Concealer is a big player in the baking game, and a huge step in achieving the bright, airbrushed look you crave. It’s a good idea to concealer with a more hydrating consistency like the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer to keep the makeup from creasing or enhancing any roughness in the skin’s texture. When blending the foundation and concealer, a sponge like the beautyblender original is more like to give the skin a seamless and even finish than a brush. The beautyblender is best used damp, and although you can use water it is recommended that it be wet with a setting spray instead to ensure your makeup’s longer wear.

Once the foundation and concealer have been applied, the next step into begin setting the complexion products. Similar to the traditional contouring technique, the areas you’re going to want to “bake” are those you want to be more “highlight” or make more pronounced. That tends to be: the forehead, bridge of the nose, under-eye area, and even cutting right under the cheekbone as an alternative to contouring. I recommend using translucent powders with a slightly yellow tone like Bésame Cosmetics Brightening French Vanilla Face Powder since the brightening formula will give your skin an extra “oomph”! Apply the setting powder using your damp sponge (wet with Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray) or beautyblender and don’t be afraid to really pack it on so that it “cooks” the other products nicely!

Once you’ve allowed the translucent powder to “bake” for about ten minutes or so, you can dust off the excess powder with a large fluffy brush. A fan brush with natural bristles like the MAKEUP FOREVER 134 Large Powder Fan Brush will lightly dust the translucent powder away without moving the makeup underneath.

Beauty Jobs – The Orange Lipstick Challenge!

Thursday, July 16th, 2015

If you’re looking for a twist on a classic red lipstick—orange is the way to go. Although bright colours are often intimidating, finding the proper shade of orange is simpler than it looks. The key to finding your perfect orange lipstick is to base it on your undertone. My go-to trick for that is to look at the underside of your forearm. If your veins look blue, you most likely have a cool complexion, and if they’re green your complexion is probably warm.

Peachy and coral hues will suit those with warmer complexions, while cooler tones should opt for blue-based options. For those with deeper skin, an orange-red shade may be more flattering.

Here are my best few shade options for different skin tones:

beauty-nine-to-five_MG_7275 facebook

Erin Sousa is a triple threat – she is the founder of Boutique Marketing and PR Firm Sparkle Media, Glitter Guide’s Beauty Editor and an Instagram all-star. Between producing photo shoots for her clients that include Sweet Bake Shop, Barefoot Contessa and LeVert Beauty, and days packed with meetings, we needed to know what was in this on-the-go branding expert’s beauty bag! To no surprise, every item has topped our beauty wish list.

the sparkle makeup bag

L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara: I’ve used this mascara for years, and It’s my holy grail – I go back to it every time!

NARS Concealer: I use this under my eyes and it gives the prefect coverage – never cake-y.

NARS Tinted Moisturizer: This is a product I have used for years because the coverage perfects, but doesn’t look obvious, and gives me a radiant finish.

RGB 5-Free Polish in Dove: This is the softest grey and the formula is super high quality for an opaque result.

MAC 217 Eyeshadow Brush: I have multiples of this brush, it’s the ultimate shadow brush that I use daily.

Proderm AHA BHA 5-2: A dose of clarifying ingredients, aha-bha exfoliates with 5% glycolic acid and 2% salicylic acid overnight to help my ski turn over (from Pure Light Laser).

Make Up For Ever Artist Liner in Matte Black: Smooth and creamy, with serious lasting power, I smudge this into my lashline and it stays ALL say.

Jo Malone Perfume: I have a handful of Jo Malone fragrances I rotate between and they are my must have perfume.

Nars Dual Intensity Blush in Jubilation as a highlighter and eye shadow, and Panic as a bright blush – both are absolutely essentials for me!

Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder: This is always what I fish my face with and use it throughout the day for touch ups.

Glossier Priming Moisturizer: I love this product! It hydrates and also gives my skin a glow – I have no idea how this works as well as it does!

Makeup Artist Jobs – Metallic Eyeshadow

Thursday, November 20th, 2014

beauty-nine-to-five - beauty jobsmetalliceyes1

Metallic eyeshadow is definitely one of the more intimidating holiday looks, at first glance. Don’t fret—this look is very wearable and you can easily impress everyone at your holiday parties. This is great for taking your look from day to night. Just follow these tips to bring out your inner supermodel with metallic eyeshadow.

1. Base. It’s all about the base—for your lids, that is! Prep your eyelids with Urban Decay Primer Potion to make those shiny lids last through the night.

2. Pick your lid shade.  Bronze eyeshadow look great on any skin tone and tend to look muted. If you want to go for a bold statement, go with bright metallics.

3. Protect. Put a cotton pad or piece of tissue below your eyes to catch any excess eyeshadow.

4. Application. Using a domed eyeshadow brush, apply the colour in one swoop across the centre of the lid and repeat until you reach your desired colour intensity. I know, this seems pretty basic but the key is to not go back and forth. The latter will cause the dreaded eyeshadow fallout.

5. Highlight. Choose another metallic shade that compliments your eyeshadow and highlight the inner corners of your eyelids.

6. Dimension. If you want to add dimension, use a shimmery shade that’s darker than your lid shade and apply it from the outer lid. Blend inward until you reach your desired effect.

7. Gilded glamour. Apply a foil finish eyeshadow with fingertips to get an ultra-chic glittery effect.

8. Finishing touches. Apply mascara. Keep your nails, lips and cheeks neutral to focus attention on the eyes.

1. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion – Original, $14, available at Sephora.

2. Dior Medium Eyeshadow Brush, $34, available at The Bay.

3. NARS Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow, $33, available at Sephora.

4. Stila Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow, $42, available at Sephora.

Beauty Jobs – Makeup Multi-taskers

Thursday, October 23rd, 2014

beauty-nine-to-fivemakeupmultitaskers1 makeupmultitaskers2

As a makeup artist, I’m always looking for ways to condense my makeup kit and travel light. That’s why I love innovative beauty products that do more than just their intended use. Eye primer as lip primer? Yes please! Declutter your makeup collection and streamline your beauty routine with these makeup multi-taskers.

1. Benefit Erase Paste

I adore the versatility and creamy texture of Benefit’s Erase Paste. The creamy texture makes it great as an undereye concealer and eye/lip primer. To prevent red lipstick from feathering, simply apply Erase Paste to the outer edge of the lips and set with powder.

2. Rosebud Perfume Co. Rosebud Salve

The first thing I do when I prep a model’s skin is apply Rosebud Salve to his/her lips. The models love the moisturizing properties of this petroleum oil-based salve and the light scent of roses. I also use this to heal cracked skin, tame unruly eyebrows and moisturize dry nail cuticles (I know, gross but necessary).

3. NARS The Multiple in Portofino

Makeup artists love the multi-tasking abilities of NARS The Multiple. I particularly love the Portofino shade since it’s gorgeous as a blush and gives my lips a doll-like pink hue. The creamy texture of the NARS multiple sticks make them ideal as eyeshadows, lipsticks, blushers and bronzers.

4. Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil

Look into any makeup artist’s kit and you’ll be sure to find cleaning oil—the “it” skin prep product. The Bobbi Brown cleansing oil is great at removing makeup and moisturizing skin before bed. The indulgent jasmine scent is an extra bonus.

5. MAC Pigment

These are my favourite products by MAC because of their endless number of uses. Pigments are highly-concentrated loose powders that can be transformed into virtually any makeup product. For instance, I custom create my own lipglosses by mixing a clear lipgloss with the Magenta pigment. The possibilities are endless!

Product Details:

1. Benefit Erase Paste, $26, available at Ulta

2. Rosebud Perfume Co. Rosebud Salve, $7.50, available at Sephora

3. NARS The Multiple – Laguna, $46, available at The Bay

4. Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil, $17.50, available at Sephora

5. MAC Pigment, $25, available at MAC Cosmetics
