beauty-nine-to-five - beauty jobs1

Feeling uninspired lately? So we’re we. To solve our nail woes and habit of perpetually nude nails, we researched the top trends and striking nail art in hopes of refreshing our manicures.

That being said, choosing a nail colour is sometimes unnecessarily complicated. It’s easy to become overwhelmed by endless polish options, which is probably why we’re all guilty of sticking to a three shade rotation. However, summer is the best time to experiment with colour, so we’ve compiled a guide to the shades of the season.

All Blue Everything

Blue is an expressive, yet flattering colour that will be your new staple. While testing things out don’t worry about the office, because these new blues can still pass as sophisticated and versatile.

Short nails are having a moment and will keep your look sharp while wearing a vivid blue. We say the brighter the better, so try this cobalt from NAILS INC.

This whimsical ocean blue from RGB Cosmetics will surely inspire your next beach day.

Sunny Shades

Essie’s vibrant orange would look great on medium to dark skin tones.

Pastel yellow is ideal for when you want a playful colour, without being too attention-grabbing, like a neon.

Go Grey

If you still long for a toned-down look, grey is definitely the way to go. Specifically, light greys and dusky hues look clean-cut, without reminding us of the winter season. This pale grey by Smith & Cult would do well on those with cool undertones.

Clean Lines + Negative Space

We love the look of line art and minimalist nails, even more so when they’re combined. It’s chic, modern, and an incredibly easy way to mix up your look (with the help of some guide tape).

Beauty Jobs – Shellac vs Regular Nail Polish

Wednesday, January 27th, 2016

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobsnails

Who doesn’t love a good mani and pedi? Getting your weekly nail appointments can surely add up. There is shellac manicures and the cheaper alternative of regular nail polish manicures. What is better shellac manicures or regular nail polish manicures? Let’s explore further so that you can choose the best manicure for you.

I ventured off to my local nail salon to gather some research about both manicures. Shellac nail manicures normally cost around $20-30 and lasts 14 days. The great thing is that the nail polish will not chip and will always have that fresh shiny look. The bad thing is that shellac can cause some damage to your nail due to the chemicals and harsh buffing used to remove the shellac.

Nail Polish manicures often cost about $10-20 and can last up to 7 days. The problem is that  regular nail polish can chip easily and look dull over time. Regular nail polish sometimes cannot live up to the long work days due to the amount of contact our hands have with various surfaces such as water.

Here are two products that can help you save some money at the salon and still have your nails looking gorgeous and shiny.  Compare the two and select the best nail manicure for you !

1. Sally Hansen Salon Gel Polish Starter Kit, $59, available at Walmart

This at home shellac manicure kit is great for those who want to have a shellac manicure that can be safely removed with nail polish remover. It can last for 14 days just like salon shellac nail manicures. It comes with a UV light, nail polish remover and other essential tools that will leave your nails shiny and bright.

2. Priti NYC-5 Free Nail Polish, $15, available at Priti Nyc

For those who are interested in a regular nail polish manicure, Priti NYC is a company that specializes in creating organic nail polish ,which leaves your nails healthy and colorful. The company prides itself on carrying nail polishes that are formaldehyde free. There is also a Soy Nail polish remover available which is safer than Acetone based removers.  Head to their website to learn more about their health and environmental conscious brand.

Beauty Jobs – Nail Colour Trends For Spring

Wednesday, April 29th, 2015

When it comes to runway beauty, there was once again a serious focus on nails this season. Gone are the days of the standard sheer pink digits, as everything from beautiful bolds to chalky neutrals are taking its place as the trendiest colours for spring. Here are some of our top picks for the nail shades you need to be wearing this season!

Bold Runway Inspo

From the classic red lip and nail combo at Zac Posen, to a deep cobalt at Reed Krakoff, the ‘brighter the better’ seems to be the motto of the season. Vibrant peaches also makes a summery statement, dominating at many shows including Alice + Olivia.Bolds

1. Maybelline New York Colorshow Nail Lacquer in An Old Flame, $3.46, available at Walmart

2. Yves Saint Laurent La Laque Couture in Bleu Majorelle, $27, available at Sephora

3. Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Nail Polish in Peach, $7.97, available at Walmart

Neutral Runway Inspo

While colour was the main event, we also saw an updated take on neutrals. Glossy nudes were replaced with more opaque earth tones, like the smokey slate at Peter Som and creamy camel hue at Narciso Rodriguez. Want to take your nudes one step further? Try a shimmery bronze like the shade seen at Giorgio Armani for a little more pep.

Neutrals4. Essie Nail Polish in Petal Pusher, $9.99, available at Shoppers Drug Mart

5. Deborah Lippmann Nail Color in Terra Nova, $18, available at

6. Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored Hi-Shine Nail Lacquer in Petra, $22, available at Sephora

Montreal Beauty Jobs – Pretty in Pastel

Monday, June 10th, 2013

Pastel and spring go together like peas and carrots. And although splashes of colour have popped up on the runway in recent years, pastel fashion is always a springtime staple. (inspirational images courtesy of The Model Stage blog.) This season, however, these subdued hues have gone beyond attire and become the latest colour palette in makeup. Dusted on eyes, painted on lips, swiped onto nails – however you play it, pastels are oh-so-pretty – here’s how to get the look:

Eyes: For an intense dose of colour, go for a cream shadow or liner. Smudge a punchy mint green cream shadow onto lids from your lashes to brow bone or line eyes with a pretty lilac for a more defined eye look. We recommend: Illamasqua Cream Pigment in Bedaub, $26 available at Sephora; Sephora Collection Jumbo Liner 12hr Wear Waterproof in #31 Lilac Shimmer.

Lips: Cotton candy pink or vivid peach are no-brainer picks. Since sheer pastels tend to blend into lips, be sure to layer, layer, layer! We recommend: Joe Fresh Lip Gloss in Sugar Plum, $8 available at Joe Fresh; NARS Lipstick in Barberella, $26 available at Sephora.

Cheeks: A dose of pastel pink or coral powder blush add a fresh pop of colour. Apply to the apples of the cheeks and blend to create a soft glow. We recommend: Bobbi Brown Blush in Pale Pink, $25 available at Sephora or Holt Renfrew; bareMinerals Blush in Vintage Peach, $19 available at Sephora.

Nails: A plethora of pastel hues are at your fingertips – shimmery finishes can make these colours feel a tad juvenile, so stick with a matte formula. We recommend: Joe Fresh Nail Polish in Buttercup, $4 available at Joe Fresh; CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss in Lav-endure, $5.99 available at Shoppers Drug Mart; Ciaté Paint Pots Nail Polish in Ferris Wheel, $15 available at Sephora.

Vancouver Beauty Jobs – Lacc Beauty Launches Vegan Nail Polish

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

More and more beauty brands are expanding their eco friendly beauty options, while it might be easy to find an all natural foundation or mascara when walking into Sephora, it’s still quite tricky to come across natural formula’s in nail polish. Founder of lacc (la couleur couture) Farima Hakkak prides her vegan nail polish company in offering a wide range of nail polish containing no toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, dibutyl phthalate, camphor and toluene. Lacc Beauty was created when in 2009, Farima was searching for a nail polish brand with high-end luxe colours but was unable to find any at a drugstore price point. The range of brights, pale pinks and my favourite, a bold blue shade called ‘1977’ make the line completely versatile and perfect for any type of manicure. The brands headquarters are based out of Vancouver and the product is manufactured in New York but global shipping is offered on If you’re looking for nail polish options to make your manicure a little bit more vegan approved, Lacc Beauty has you covered.

Beauty Jobs – Neon Manicures

Monday, April 29th, 2013

Bored of basic nude or classic red nails? Me too. Neon nail polishes are a trendy way to brighten up your manicure for Spring. Here are a few of my favourite polishes, these bright hues will give you an instant boost of happiness every time you glance at those eye catching nails!

Julep Neon Nail Dips, $16
I love glitter nail polish, I’m naturally drawn to sparkles and neon so when Julep launched their neon nail dips I was excited to use the glitter pots to make my manicure a little bit more striking. The kit contains two glitter pots in ultra pink and hot magenta, a brush and a top coat.

Nails Inc. Neon Nail Polish, $12, available at Sephora
The best thing about these nail polishes are the super glossy long lasting formula, a top coat is optional but definitely not necessary. My favourite shade is ‘Portobello’, a neon coral that will look great paired with a tan in the summer.

Sephora by OPI Neon Lights Mini Set, $29
This collection of four mini-sized neons, a base coat and a top coat are sure to make an impression, the white base coat will make the electrifying shades pop even more. The yellow, pink, orange and purple will give you enough variety to match with bikini all summer long.

Makeup Artist Jobs – Cherry Blossom Beauty

Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

Spring has sprung in Vancouver and cherry blossom season is upon us! There’s nothing better than walking down the street and seeing those charming pink blossoms on trees everywhere. In honour of one of our favourite times of the year, here are 4 beauty products to give you a cherry-blossom boost no matter what the weather:

1. Japanese Cherry Blossom Body Butter, $15, The Body Shop

By now we think everyone knows about the rich, moisturizing powers of The Body Shop’s Body Butter, right? Well they took the desirability of this body cream up a notch by making a lightly-scented floral version inspired by cherry blossoms!

2. Benefit Posietint, $30, Sephora

Posietint is the little sister of Benefit’s classic Benetint cheek and lip tint gel — it’s a softer pink that leaves you with a flush akin to that you would get if you jogged around the block ie: super fresh and flattering.

3. Joe Fresh Nail Polish in Cherry Blossom, $4, Joe Fresh/Real Canadian Superstore

Make your fingernails look like pretty petals with Joe Fresh’s Cherry Blossom nail polish. Their formula is long-lasting, non-streaky and opaque, which we love.

4. L’Occitane Cherry Blossom Eau De Toilette, $38, L’Occitane

If you live somewhere with Cherry Blossom trees, you know that their smell is fresh, floral and totally intoxicating. Now what if you could wear that scent and be all those things? L’Occitane’s Cherry Blossom perfume has you covered!
