Beauty Jobs – Discover Flower: Drew Barrymore’s New Makeup Line

Wednesday, April 10th, 2013

We know Drew Barrymore as an actress with a career spanning decades, and as a former Covergirl, but now the superstar is lending her household name to another venture: a cosmetics line! “I wanted to give women department store quality at a mass retailer price,” said Drew on why she decided to launch her own line, Flower Cosmetics, “I’ve worked with the makeup world my whole life. I’ve saved every piece of makeup along the way and fell in love with the creativity of the whole process.”

The line is exclusively available at Walmart and online at Walmart.com. Read on for our product picks from Flower Cosmetics:

1. Ready Set Glow! Blush/Bronzer Duo, $10, available at Walmart

Products with multiple uses are not only fun but budget-concious! You can use the bronzer to either add a glow or contour your cheekbones, then use the soft pink blush for a flush of colour.

2. Petite Fleurs Pocket Triplet Lip, $7, available at Walmart

Does anybody else think of those multi-colour push-up crayons from childhood when they look at this lip colour? This Triplet Lip colour allows you to carry three different lipsticks with you wherever you go. You could even layer them to make more shades!

3. Zoom-In Ultimate Mascara, $8, available at Walmart

This is a seriously cool mascara: With one twist of the top, the applicator wand transforms shapes and allows you to adjust the direction of the wand for extra volume, or extra length as needed. Watch Drew show you how she does it here.

Makeup Artist Jobs – Sunrise Eyes

Monday, April 1st, 2013

(Photos courtesy of Daily MakeoverHaven and Home, Pinterest)

Often missed, yet a beautiful sight, catching the dawning of a new day always proves worth the early rise. A stunning array of fiery oranges, coral pinks and bright yellows that peak from the horizon is not only the visual splendour of a sunrise, but the latest inspiration for beauty looks this spring. A bold wash of blazing colour or a soft blend of warm hues, however you choose to rock it, this palette is a bright idea. From Louis Vuitton to Dior, we share how to replicate these runway looks that are worth the rise and shine:

Peter Som
The eyes are the horizon with this runway look, with a blend of vibrant orange, soft peach and pastel yellow. Add a couple coats of black mascara to add definition. We recommend: Make Up For Ever Pure Pigments in ‘No. 4 Orange’, $20, available at Sephora; Benefit Longwear Powder Shadow in ‘It’s Complicated’, $20, available at Sephora; Illamasqua Powder Eye Shadow in ‘Hype’, $20 available at Sephora; CoverGirl LashBlast Length Mascara, $9, available at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Louis Vuitton
A wash of muted peach paired with sultry black eyeliner created a bright, elegant look that played well with the fun, citrus collection at Louis Vuitton. Be sure to add several coats of volumizing mascara for mega-impact. We recommend: Sephora Collection Colourful Mono Eyeshadow in ‘Sun Kissed 78’, $5; Dolce & Gabbana The Kohl Pencil Intense Kohl Eye Crayon in ‘True Black 1’, $30, available at Sephora; Clinique High Impact Extreme Volume Mascara, $20, available at Sephora.

Dior
Okay, this look may be a tad extreme for everyday. Forgo the crystals and add a splash of bold tangerine shadow all over lids that continues in the inner corner and blends in below half of the eye. Finish off with a thin layer of black layer and mascara and you’re a tangerine dream! We recommend: NYX Eye Shadow in ‘Hot Orange’, $6, available at Rexall; Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Liner in ‘Black’, $20, available at Sephora; Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes!, $19 available at Sephora.

Theysken’s Theory
A much softer approach, a halo of peach blush adorns eyes to create a sunny glow that’s totally wearable for all. To mimic the glossy finish of this look, add a touch of peach gloss under lower lashes. Or create an all-over gleam with a cream blush instead. We recommend: NARS Blush in ‘Orgasm’, $29, available at Sephora; Givenchy Hydra Sparkling Magic Lip & Cheek Balm in ‘Peach Glow’, $31, available at Sephora; Joe Fresh Cream Blush in ‘Apricot’, $8, available at Joe Fresh or Real Canadian Superstore.

Beauty Jobs – Toronto Fashion Week Beauty Trends

Wednesday, March 27th, 2013

World Mastercard Fashion Week was in full force last week with hot runway looks buzzing. But we can’t forget about the beauty trends. The best part about the makeup from Toronto Fashion Week is that they were all produced using drugstore brand products making it easy to achieve the runway looks at home. Throughout the week, Grace Lee and the Maybelline crew were backstage to give models a complete runway makeover. And I will teach you how to get the looks!

Messy shadows:
Don’t worry about being precise with your shadow application, go for the messy “last-night’s-makeup” look. Using Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 HR Cream Gel Shadow, apply a neutral colour all over the lids blending up to the brow line. This was a hit on the runway in the ASHTIANI By Golnaz Ashtiani and Line Knitwear show.

Bold Brows:
Gone are the days of over-tweezed eyebrows, in fact, the bigger the better. This season, Pink Tartan showed us that bold brows are in. So grow in those brows and lightly fill them in with Maybelline’s Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil. A small amount of this product allows you to easily draw in your eyebrows for a natural look.

Winged Liner:
Whether you want to mimic the soft liner seen in the MIZ By Izzy Cammilleri show or the dramatic, double-lined look at the Sid Neigum show, you can achieve it with the Maybelline Eyestudio Master Precise Liner. With its small tip, fine lines are easy to achieve and the long lasting all day wear means no touch ups needed!

Clean Skin:
This season is all about a fresh, polished face, a signature look every season for Joe Fresh. In order to achieve that look, your skin needs to be flawless (or at least look it.) With the long hours of fashion week, dark circles will stand out more than ever. Fortunately, with Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer, no one will know how much sleep we might be lacking.

Lips:
Throughout the week, it seems like the best accessory to any outfit is a bold lip. We saw the candy apple red lip in shows such as VAWK, David Dixon and MIZ By Izzy Camilleri. To achieve a perfect pout, start by applying Maybelline Baby Lips for a base then top it off with Maybelline Colour Sensational Vivid in the colour ‘On Fire Red’. Or try Colour Sensational in the colour ‘Red Revival’ for a darker colour seen in shows such as Mathew Gallagher, Mackage and Laura Siegel.

Hairstylist Jobs – Lipstains

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013

Long-lasting, convenient, and flattering, lipstains are a makeup staple. They’re perfect for the days when you don’t want to wear a bold lipstick but still want a little colour to brighten up your face. Here are four lip stains I’ve tried that I highly recommend:

1. Benefit Benetint, $36, available at Sephora

Benetint is the product that started it all: it’s one of the original tints that makeup artists have sworn by for years. It comes in a nail-polish-like bottle and it’s very thin and watery, but It. Is. Potent! Just a little bit painted on your lips will last for a few hours and, bonus, you can use it on your cheeks too!

2. The Body Shop Lip & Cheek Stain, $14

This lip tint comes in an easily-portable tube and has a gel-like consistency. It’s one of the longest-lasting lip stains I’ve used and doesn’t dry out your lips at all, which some tints can tend to do.

3. Covergirl Outlast Lipstain, $9, available at London Drugs

When you were a kid, did you ever have the urge to use your school markers as lipstick? Did you ever actually do it? Well, this Covergirl lipstain feels almost exactly like that! It’s a marker made especially for your lips that comes in a bunch of different and flattering colours.

4. The DIY route, via The Beauty Department

Yes, I’ve actually tried this, and yes, it actually works! Much like how Koolaid gives kids a mean moustache, it can tint your lips for a long-lasting effect. All you need is a q-tip and a packet of dry Kool-Aid so it’s budget-friendly too!

Esthetician Jobs – Spring Break Beauty Essentials

Thursday, March 14th, 2013

There’s no better excuse to take a vacation than spring break. Come March, you’ve just about had it with never-ending dreary weather, post-new year excitement has officially come to a complete halt, the days can’t seem to get longer fast enough, and work/school is probably driving you crazy. A little warm weather getaway couldn’t come at a more perfect time! Before you jet off on your spring break holiday, throw these essential beauty products in your bag to keep you pretty and protected while you’re away from home.

1. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Sunscreen Spray, $15, available at London Drugs. I never travel without this aerosol sunscreen. It’s extremely lightweight, never sticky, and it’s non-comedogenic and oil-free so I even use it on my face.

2. LA VANILA The Healthy Lip Screen SPF 30, $21, available at Sephora. With shea butter and essential oils of peppermint and vanilla, this SPF lip balm is moisturizing and delicious. It provides physical sun block with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, so you get chemical-free protection. It’s on the pricy side, but a little goes a long way.

3. CoverGirl LashBlast Waterproof mascara, $10, available at London Drugs. Splashing in the pool and frolicking on the beach are top priority on a spring break vacation but are not really conducive to flawless makeup. Since I don’t always go makeup-free on holiday, I turn to this amazing drug store mascara for crazy lash volume that is also waterproof.

4. Ojon Color Sustain for Color-Treated Hair Travel Kit, $26, available at Sephora. With my colour-treated tresses, I don’t risk further damage with hotel hair products. Luckily, this travel kit has shampoo, conditioner, and rub-out dry cleansing spray specially formulated for delicate colour-treated hair. Now I can kick back and relax knowing my mane is well cared for no matter where I go.

5. Smashbox O-Glow Intuitive Cheek Colour, $26, available at Shopper’s Drug Mart. I like to keep my beauty routine simple on vacation but I just can’t live without blush. This waterproof gel formula withstands heat and humidity. The extra cool factor comes from the personalized colour – after applying, it adjusts to a unique shade specific for your complexion. Magic!

6. Garnier Skin Renew BB Cream Miracle Skin Perfector, $19, available at London Drugs. Easy vacation makeup doesn’t include a thick layer of foundation. Instead, try a BB cream that provides light coverage with bonus features like 24-hour hydration and protective vitamin C.

Makeup Jobs – Add a Pop of Colour to Your Spring Makeup

Tuesday, March 12th, 2013

Colour can be difficult to incorporate into your every day makeup palette if you aren’t careful. The rule of thumb for adding a dramatic tint is moderation.

My favourite spring beauty trend for adding the perfect pop of colour is bright eyeliner. Apply Makeup Forever Aqua Eyes in the colour Turquoise ($20, available at Sephora) on your lower lash line, adding a shimmery white shadow to the inner corners. To create some drama, flick out the liner on the outer ends for a cat-eye effect. Stick to neutral shadows on your lids, and black or brown liner on the upper lash line to tone down the look. Remember, you want a pop of colour, not overwhelming colour! Add a volumizing mascara to complete the eye look. If you’re looking for a more subtle look, try a metallic gold or silver liner such as Sephora’s Nano Eyeliner in Golden Sand or Precious Silver ($7).

A colourful eyeliner is really the only thing you need to update your everyday makeup look to achieve a fresh spring glow!

Beauty Jobs – Hollywood Skin Care Secrets

Monday, March 4th, 2013

Pimples, blotchiness, dullness – ever wonder why these skin woes never adorn the faces of our favourite A-listers? Yeah, us too! While most celebs have a facialist on speed-dial to address such beauty blunders, the rest of us ain’t so lucky – which is why learning a few Hollywood secrets can be oh-so-helpful. Alas, some tricks of the trade from Tinseltown to get your skin red-carpet-ready:

Mega-Watt Glow:

Exfoliation is key! Use an exfoliating scrub once a week or buff skin with a cleansing brush three times a week, followed by a glycolic acid lotion for a healthy glow. If your skin is sensitive, wet a washcloth and buff skin with a gentle cream cleanser, then massage a facial oil into skin. We recommend: Caudalie Gentle Buffing Cream, $35, available at Sephora; Peter Thomas Roth Glycolic Acid 10% Moisturizer, $45, available at Sephora; NARS Gentle Cream Cleanser, $29, available at Sephora; Belmondo The Dew Nourishing Facial & Oil/Serum, $44.95, available at www.belmondo.ca

Address Dryness:

Dryness can make skin look lack-luster and dull – SO not red-carpet worthy! Try steaming to open pores and detox skin: fill your skin with steaming hot water (for an aromatherapy version, add a couple drops of lavender oil to water), lean over the steaming water with a towel over your head to prevent heat from escaping. Wait 5-10 minutes, pat your face dry and apply a super-rich moisturizer. We recommend: Clinique Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator, $37, available at The Bay.

The 10-Minute Celeb Facial:

Apply a rejuvenating serum, and then layer a hydrating mask, leaving for 10 minutes. Rinse off to reveal a gorgeous glow. We recommend: AmorePacific Rejuvenating Serum, $100 available at Sephora; Kate Somerville Quench Hydrating Mask, $45 available at Sephora.

Spotless, Luminous Skin:

While tinted moisturizers are great for creating a dewy glow, their coverage power isn’t so strong. Try mixing a BB cream with a light, silky foundation, to amplify coverage, while keeping skin luminous. We recommend: Urban Decay Naked Skin Beauty Balm Broad Spectrum SPF 20, $34 available at Sephora; Laura Mercier Silk Crème Foundation, $43 available at Sephora.

Believable Bronzer:

Some liquid bronzers are more on the shimmery side, making the whole bronzed look a tad bit unnatural. For a more believable alternative, smooth a bronzer stick onto one palm, then add a dab of baby oil, rubbing hands together and massage into skin. We recommend: NARS The Multiple in ‘Palm Beach’, $39, available at Sephora; Johnson’s Baby Oil Gel with Shea and Cocoa Butter, $5, available at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Hairstylist Jobs – Best of NYFW Beauty

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

When the models walk the runways at New York Fashion Week, all eyes are on the clothes. Editors, fashionistas, bloggers, and stylists note the trends that dictate what we’ll be wearing next season, but no fashion story is complete without a glance above the neck – just as the designer’s influence our wardrobe choices, the makeup artists and hairstylists backstage play a role in the beauty trends that will take to the streets. From unconventional eyeliner to back-to-basics hair, here are my favourite beauty looks from New York Fashion Week.

Lid liner at Rag & Bone. With somewhat of a ‘60s influence, makeup artist Gucci Westman lined models’ creases starting a quarter of an inch from the inner corner of the eye and angled out towards the temple.

Foiled eyes at Thakoon. I love this look for a night out. NARS makeup artists layered blue eye paint with metallic bronze and gold shadows to create a gorgeous foiled effect that looks expensive and sexy.

Geometric cat eyes at Michael Kors. Playing off traditional smoky makeup and cat eye looks, this rectangular smoked out winged shadow is a modern take on time tested classics.

Natural texture at Proenza Schouler. Put down the blow dryer, flat iron, and curling rods and embrace your natural texture! Like a more wearable take on Spring 2012’s wet hair look, the models at Proenza Schouler sported a cool anti-hairstyle with strands weighed down with product to look effortlessly cool.

Big hair & pink lips at Diane von Furstenberg. If downplayed hair and subtle nude makeup isn’t quite your thing, the big hair and fun lip colour at Diane von Furstenberg offers a beautiful alternative. The ‘70s influenced the big, loose curls and the semi-matte lips were achieved by mixing MAC Chromographic Pencil in Process Magenta with lip conditioner.

Purple smoky eye at Jason Wu. There is something undeniably sexy about a smoky eye, but it’s taken to an unexpected level in a flattering purple shade as seen at Jason Wu (Wu custom-mixed the colour for his upcoming collaboration with Lancome).

Makeup Artist Jobs – Contour How-To

Monday, February 18th, 2013

(Photo: BeautyFool)

As a former art student, contouring is a lesson I have carried with me throughout the years, applying diligently to my beauty regime. Switching from charcoal pencils to makeup brushes, the simple art of contouring remains the same. The beauty of makeup is the way it can transform your look, encompassing products, tools and tricks to enhance features in ways we’re not born with – that’s the whole fun, after all!

Some artful shading can create illusions of a contoured face, whether you want to diminish a not-so-favourite feature or sculpt runway model cheekbones. Here’s how to shape up:

1. Prep by dabbing a lighter concealer onto areas of the face that you want to highlight. When you apply foundation on top, these areas look a little lighter. We recommend: Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Radiant Touch, $50 available at Sephora or Holt Renfrew.

2. After applying foundation, suck in your cheeks and sweep a matte bronzer or contouring powder into the hollows of your cheekbones, blending well. Use that same shade on the sides of your nose, under your chin, and on any other part of your face that you want to minimize. We recommend: CARGO Cosmetics Matte Medium Bronzer, $29 ; Sephora Collection Pro Angled Contour Brush #75, $36 available at Sephora.

3. Using an iridescent powder, dust over parts of your face where the light would naturally hit, such as brow bones, cheekbones, and the bridge of the nose. For fair haired beauties, choose a cooler shade; warm-skinned lovelies should opt for a golden toned shade. We recommend: Make Up For Ever Star Powder, $22 available at Sephora.

Makeup Jobs – Valentine’s Day Look: Alexa Chung

Thursday, February 14th, 2013

We’d all like to think of Valentine’s day as a wonderful, romantic event that our sweetheart has been planning for weeks, but that’s not always a reality. You don’t always have hours to get ready before the big V-Day date so here’s a look you can pull together in 10 minutes and still manage to look fresh, romantic, and flirty. Read on for the products you’ll need to get Alexa Chung’s effortless look…

1. tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-Hour Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen, $44, available at Sephora

Evening out your skintone shouldn’t take more than one product or more than 1 minute. This BB cream has a built-in moisturizer, sunscreen, primer, and coverage for any imperfections and it’ll make you look dewy and natural.

2. Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Woppin Watermelon, $19, available at Sephora

This lipstick is sheer enough that your date won’t mind kissing you but moisturizing enough that you won’t have to keep reapplying it.

3. Conair Infiniti 3/4-inch Professional Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Iron, $32, available at London Drugs

Depending on your hair type and length, curling your whole head could take up to an hour. Who has time for that? With this look, you can pull all your hair back into a low bun, leaving a few face-framing sections. Curl those sections with this ¾” iron for a wispy, romantic look.

4. MAC Fluidline, $19

Finish your look off with some 60’s-style winged eyeliner. MAC Fluidline is a long-lasting formula that won’t budge for the whole night.
