Hairstylist Jobs – The Bottom Line

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

I love finding new beauty inspiration from the runways. It’s a no-brainer that designers inspire seasonal wardrobe overhauls, but the makeup artists they work with backstage can provide endless inspiration, too. One of my favourite looks for spring/summer 2013 is from Diane von Furstenberg’s show. There’s something so sexy about the smudgy under-eye makeup, a subtle nod to grunge ’90s without so much of the heroine-chic. Here’s how you can recreate the look for yourself.

1. Prep lids with an eyelid primer for a smooth base and even colour. My favourite is smashbox’s Photo Finish Lid Primer, $22, available from Sephora.

2. Shade entire upper lid to the brow bone with a soft beige shadow like MAC’s Shroom, $18. Then highlight under the eyebrows and in the inner corners of your eyes with a slightly shimmery white shadow; try MAC eye shadow in Vanilla, $18.

3. With a flat edged eye liner brush, apply a matte chocolate brown (like Laura Mercier Eye Colour in Coffee Ground, $28, available from Sephora) along the lower lash line, extending the line slightly beyond the eye at an angle towards the outer edge of your eyebrow. Be generous with your application – this is supposed to be a bottom heavy look.

4. Line the upper and lower waterlines with white eye liner; I’m a big fan of MAC Eye Kohl in Fascinating, $19. This really helps give that beautiful wide-eyed look the models had at the Dian von Furstenberg show.

5. In the crease, use a fluffy eye shadow brush to apply a sweep of peachy eye shadow – a perfect choice would be Laura Mercier Eye Colour in Guava, $28, available from Sephora.

6. Finish with a hefty dose of mascara – my current favourite is Guerlain Maxi Lash, $32, available from Sephora. It gives amazing volume and definition without clumps.

Beauty Jobs – Two-Toned Lips

Monday, March 18th, 2013

When the seasons change, one of my favourite things to do is switch up my makeup. I trade out my dark, serious colours for bright and happy ones, paying special attention to the fun array of lipsticks I can wear in sunnier months. This spring, I plan to use some of my favourite shades to recreate the subtle two-toned lips worn by models at Jason Wu SS13. Backstage at the show, MAC artist Diane Kendal used a staggering six products to formulate this effect. Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting the look at home:

1) Line your entire mouth with a bright bluish red lip pencil – Kendal used MAC lip pencil in Cherry, $18.

2) Darken your lip line with an intense violet purple liner, such as MAC lip pencil in Vino, $18.

3) With a lip brush, blend two lipsticks, a deep cool plum and a mid-tonal cool tangerine, and apply to the inner part of your lips to achieve a graduated colour. The models at Jason Wu wore MAC Mineralize Rich Lipstick in Lush Life blended with MAC Mineralize Rich Lipstick in Lady at Play.

4) Using your ring finger, lightly blot a bright magenta lip colour at the center of your mouth for a subtle pop of pink; try MAC Pro Process Lipmix in Fuchsia.

5) For an iridescent matte finish, tap a little of MAC’s Pigment Colour Powder in Neo-Orange, at the center of your lips.

Esthetician Jobs – Lashing Out

Tuesday, February 26th, 2013

Warmer weather is on its way (right?), which means special occasion season is coming: think prom, weddings, fabulous spring break getaways, and long weekend celebrations. When it comes to special occasion makeup, it’s all about the eyes, so why not give yours a little something extra? No matter the event, there’s a lash that will give you that bonus feature to take your look from ordinary to extraordinary.

For the night on the town: MAC Lashes #44, $19, available in Vancouver at MAC Robson, 908 Robson St. 604-682-6588. These are my go-to lashes for ladies’ nights and Vegas trips. With small bundles of lashes that dramatically wing out at the ends, I feel like a glamorous starlet whenever I put them on.

For the bride: MAKE UP FOR EVER Individual Lashes, $17, available at Sephora. The key to successful bridal makeup is aiming to look like the best version of yourself, so individual lashes are a great way to enhance what you already have. Easily customizable, your bridal makeup artist can apply as few or as many as needed to give you a unique and beautiful lash look.

For the vacationer: Eyelash Extensions, $40-$200, available in Vancouver at Noir Lash Lounge, multiple locations. Heading on holiday and don’t want to worry about mascara application? Eyelash extensions are the way to go! Sit back and relax while a professional adheres individual lashes to your natural ones, then just board your plane and forget about makeup. If you follow a few easy lash care guidelines, these can last anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks.

For the date night: Ardell Lash Accents, $6, available from Well.ca. I love accent lashes for a flirty date night look. If you want just a hint of extra sexiness, these are the perfect choice – and they take only seconds to apply.

For the prom princess: MAC Lashes #34, $19, available in Vancouver at MAC Robson, 908 Robson St. 604-682-6588. MAC lashes are my absolute favourite; the strips are perfectly shaped to follow the lash line, making application a breeze – even for beginners! The #34s are perfect to add a touch of prettiness without being too over the top.

For the drama queen: PAPERSELF Peacock Eyelashes, $9, available at Sephora. For the girl who dares to stand out from the crowd, there are laser cut paper eyelashes from PAPERSELF. Available in a variety of patterns – from these gorgeous peacock feathers to butterflies and peach blossoms – wear these to be the centre of attention at your next very special occasion.

For every occasionBao Bei Lashes, $40, 888-406-5274. Bao Bei is the first to create custom lashes to match your eyes. Made of 100% mink fur, the different lashes are also named after each day of the week for every occasion whether it’s a Friday night out with the girls or just another day at work.

Hairstylist Jobs – Best of NYFW Beauty

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

When the models walk the runways at New York Fashion Week, all eyes are on the clothes. Editors, fashionistas, bloggers, and stylists note the trends that dictate what we’ll be wearing next season, but no fashion story is complete without a glance above the neck – just as the designer’s influence our wardrobe choices, the makeup artists and hairstylists backstage play a role in the beauty trends that will take to the streets. From unconventional eyeliner to back-to-basics hair, here are my favourite beauty looks from New York Fashion Week.

Lid liner at Rag & Bone. With somewhat of a ‘60s influence, makeup artist Gucci Westman lined models’ creases starting a quarter of an inch from the inner corner of the eye and angled out towards the temple.

Foiled eyes at Thakoon. I love this look for a night out. NARS makeup artists layered blue eye paint with metallic bronze and gold shadows to create a gorgeous foiled effect that looks expensive and sexy.

Geometric cat eyes at Michael Kors. Playing off traditional smoky makeup and cat eye looks, this rectangular smoked out winged shadow is a modern take on time tested classics.

Natural texture at Proenza Schouler. Put down the blow dryer, flat iron, and curling rods and embrace your natural texture! Like a more wearable take on Spring 2012’s wet hair look, the models at Proenza Schouler sported a cool anti-hairstyle with strands weighed down with product to look effortlessly cool.

Big hair & pink lips at Diane von Furstenberg. If downplayed hair and subtle nude makeup isn’t quite your thing, the big hair and fun lip colour at Diane von Furstenberg offers a beautiful alternative. The ‘70s influenced the big, loose curls and the semi-matte lips were achieved by mixing MAC Chromographic Pencil in Process Magenta with lip conditioner.

Purple smoky eye at Jason Wu. There is something undeniably sexy about a smoky eye, but it’s taken to an unexpected level in a flattering purple shade as seen at Jason Wu (Wu custom-mixed the colour for his upcoming collaboration with Lancome).

Makeup Jobs – Valentine’s Day Look: Alexa Chung

Thursday, February 14th, 2013

We’d all like to think of Valentine’s day as a wonderful, romantic event that our sweetheart has been planning for weeks, but that’s not always a reality. You don’t always have hours to get ready before the big V-Day date so here’s a look you can pull together in 10 minutes and still manage to look fresh, romantic, and flirty. Read on for the products you’ll need to get Alexa Chung’s effortless look…

1. tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-Hour Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen, $44, available at Sephora

Evening out your skintone shouldn’t take more than one product or more than 1 minute. This BB cream has a built-in moisturizer, sunscreen, primer, and coverage for any imperfections and it’ll make you look dewy and natural.

2. Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Woppin Watermelon, $19, available at Sephora

This lipstick is sheer enough that your date won’t mind kissing you but moisturizing enough that you won’t have to keep reapplying it.

3. Conair Infiniti 3/4-inch Professional Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Iron, $32, available at London Drugs

Depending on your hair type and length, curling your whole head could take up to an hour. Who has time for that? With this look, you can pull all your hair back into a low bun, leaving a few face-framing sections. Curl those sections with this ¾” iron for a wispy, romantic look.

4. MAC Fluidline, $19

Finish your look off with some 60’s-style winged eyeliner. MAC Fluidline is a long-lasting formula that won’t budge for the whole night.

Beauty Jobs – Makeout-Proof Lipsticks

Thursday, February 7th, 2013

There is romance in the air! Valentine’s Day is coming, and whether you have a beau or not, I’m sure you still have smooching on the brain. While lipstick gives you a sexy date night look, chances are he doesn’t want to end up wearing it, too (or want to wait around while you run to reapply throughout the night). So before you pucker up this Valentine’s Day, grab one of these long lasting lipsticks to power you through dinner, drinks, and your steamy make-out session. Your date will think you look hot, and he won’t have to worry about borrowing your makeup remover at the end of the night.

1. NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil, $30, available in Vancouver at The Bay Downtown, 674 Granville St. 604-681-6211. This combo lipstick/lip pencil is so easy to apply, even a toddler could use it (seriously, it’s like a giant crayon). Available in 13 shades from pale pink to deep aubergine, it’s easy to find a colour you love that will last for hours.

2. MAC Pro Longwear Lip Crème, $21, available in Vancouver at MAC Robson, 908 Robson St. 604-682-6588. I’ve been obsessed with these longwearing lipsticks from MAC since they launched a couple years ago. Best applied with a lip brush for precise placement, once it sets it isn’t going anywhere. It’s the most moisturizing longwear lipstick I’ve come across.

3. Kat von D Everlasting Love Liquid Lipstick, $23, available at Sephora. Being a tattoo artist must give someone a secret knowledge on permanent body decoration because Kat von D created one serious long-lasting lip colour! I’m a particular fan of the brick red shade ‘Outlaw,’ a perfect choice for a vampy matte lip on Valentine’s Day.

4. Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick, $29, available at Sephora. This is my newest lipstick love, and it looks like we’re going to have a long term relationship. It is highly pigmented, dries to a gorgeous matte finish, and feels satiny smooth on your lips. I especially love the hot pink ‘Fiore’ shade.

5. CoverGirl Outlast Lip Stain, $9, available at London Drugs. If you’re going for a more natural look, this CoverGirl lip stain offers a punch of colour without the thick and opaque qualities of traditional lipstick. The pen-style applicator makes it easy to apply, and the price tag isn’t too bad, either.

6. Guerlain Kiss Kiss Lip Lift, $40, available at Sephora. Okay, I know this isn’t technically a lipstick, but if have a signature shade that needs a little help committing to your lips, you need this product. It’s the ultimate lip primer that will lock in your colour and prevent bleeding, feathering, and lipstick transfer. I know it’s pricey, but I promise it’s worth the investment.

Hairstylist Jobs – Beautiful from Takeoff to Landing

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

‘Tis the season for mid-winter getaways! With the holidays behind us, and the unpleasant prospect of…oh…ten or so weeks of winter ahead, it’s no surprise that many of us are taking flight for a change of scenery. If you’re like me, you board the plane with visions of a glamorous arrival in your fabulous location, only to glimpse yourself at baggage claim and wonder “what happened to the fresh-faced vacationer that boarded that flight from Vancouver this morning?” To avoid the usual post-plane beauty slump, I’ve got a new list of tips and products (all in TSA-approved sizes) to stay glamorous from take-off to landing.

1) Set yourself up for a comfortable ride. Come prepared with a neck pillow and sleep mask. While that pillow might look dorky, there’s nothing cute (or comfortable) about cranking your neck at a Cirque du Soleil-inspired angle while trying to catch some shut-eye. Chances are, if you try it, you’re going to deplane with a kink in your neck and the tell-tale under-eye bags of a poorly rested traveler.

2) Drink plenty of water! The effects of dehydration can be seen in your skin, and airplane air is notoriously dry. It’s recommended that for every hour in the air, you drink 8 oz. of water – FYI that’s the size of a tall Starbucks coffee. Oh, and speaking of coffee, don’t drink it on the plane. Avoid caffeinated beverages since they will only aggravate your dehydration. Better yet, guzzle a coconut water or sports drink loaded with electrolytes to keep your body in balance.

3) Adjust your pre-flight makeup routine. Skip the eye makeup and mascara that can travel all over your face and swap thick foundation for a tinted moisturizer. If you’re desperate, you can always do as the celebrities do – don a pair of oversized sunglasses and no one will be the wiser!

4) If you do wear makeup, come prepared for maintenance. Instead of layering on more foundation, spritz with a facial mist to refresh your face. Pack along makeup remover options such as q-tips pre-loaded with remover or facial wipes. Blotting sheets are another great way to manage shine without layering on cakey powder.

5) Clean up! If you are going to apply products mid-flight, be sure to sanitize your hands first. Otherwise, you risk transferring whatever you’ve picked up on the plane onto your face – before you know it, you’re showing off a brand new pimple when you land at your vacation spot!

6) Save your hair. Wrap your locks in a chic head scarf, pack a cute hat to hide any flight-induced disasters, or carry-on a travel sized dry shampoo to liven up limp hair.

7) Keep the sparkle in your eyes. Bloodshot eyes are an unfortunate side effect of hours in the air – from staring at electronic screens to fight off in-flight boredom, from dry and irritating cabin air, and from probably not getting much rest on a long-haul flight (they’re called ‘red eye’ for a reason, right?). Lubricating eye drops help soothe your eyes and eliminate redness so you look a little less like a zombie upon arrival.

1. Little Honey Travel Pillow, $15, available at Amazon
2. Mineral Fusion Hydrating Mist, $17 for 2oz.
3. Bare Escentuals On the Spot Eye Makeup Remover, $5 for 24 cotton swabs
4. MAC Wipes, $18 for 30 sheets, available in Vancouver at MAC Robson, 908 Robson St., 604-682-6588
5. The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil Facial Blotting Tissues, $10 for 65 sheets
6. Bath and Body Works Anti-Bacterial Pocketbac Sanitizing Hand Gel, $5 for 5 1oz. bottles
7. Ojon Full Detox Rub-Out Dry Cleansing Spray, $14 for 1.8oz., available at Sephora
8. Thera Tears Eye Lubricant, $15 for 24 single-use doses, available at London Drugs

Beauty Jobs – Brush Cleansing 101

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

If you haven’t cleaned your makeup brushes in over 2 weeks, or ever, then they are definitely in need of a little TLC. The most neglected beauty tool on our vanity is our brushes. Think of it as a basic hygiene routine to keep bacteria and other buildup away from your face. Not only is a good cleaning regime important for hygiene, it also helps maintain the quality of your brushes, keeping them soft for much longer.

Professional Cleanser

For brushes that you use daily, such as your foundation brush, you should aim to clean them at least once a week. Professional cleansers are heavy-duty so they’re ideal for those of you who use your brushes more than once a day. My favourite is the MAC Brush Cleanser, $14.

1) Using a professional brush cleanser of your choice, pour a small amount into a bowl.
2) Dip the bristles of your brush into the cleanser so they are completely soaked.
3) Place down 3 sheets of paper towel on top of each other for better absorption and glide the bristles back and forth repeatedly until there is no more product coming off of the brush.
4) Continue these steps on the rest of your brushes refilling your bowl with fresh cleanser for every 2-3 brushes.

DIY Cleanser

You don’t need to splurge on professional cleanser to keep your brushes clean, all you need is some shampoo! Try Johnson’s Baby Shampoo. (Photo Credits: johnsonsbaby.com)

1) Pour a tablespoon of baby shampoo into a small bowl then add warm water until it gets bubbly. I like to think of it as a bubble bath for your brushes!
2) Place your brushes into the solution, gently swirling them. Keep the brushes in the water as you add each one.
3) Run each brush under cold water to rinse any remaining product.

Drying

One big mistake when drying your brushes is placing them upright in your brush holder. The best way to maintain their shape is to place them on the edge of a table with the bristles leaning over the side and letting them air dry overnight.

Makeup Jobs – Tickled Pink

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

When a cold season sneaks up on us (yet again,) we always resort to wearing bitter colours to match the bitter winds. But this season, change that up and dare yourself to hit the high notes with hot pink! This ultra-fun new beauty trend that popped up on runways from Chanel to Viktor & Rolf gives a whole new meaning to coming down with a case of pink eye. If you’re makeup routine is craving a little adventure try sweeping some punchy pink pigment across your lids like Makeup Forever’s shadow in #53 or M.A.C’s pigment powder in Magenta. For ladies that like to be the life of the party, how about rocking a pair of Shu Uemura fuchsia faux lashes? Prefer a more subtle touch? Maybe Urban Decay’s Heavy Metal glitter eyeliner in Catfight is your way to go. So have some fun and make this season a new start, because this bold look that’ll leave you pretty in pink is not for the faint of heart.

Makeup Jobs – Lush Lashes

Thursday, October 25th, 2012

You know how the Little Black Dress is a tried, tested and true wardrobe staple for instant glamour? I like to think of false lashes as the makeup equivalent. Sure, applying false lashes is a bit tricky and requires practice, but the end result is totally worth it! Individual lash clusters create a more natural look and, in my opinion, are a bit easier to apply than a full lash strip.
Intimidated by falsies? Fret not! Here’s an easy how-to guide to apply:

1. Starting with clean lashes, apply your eye makeup with the exception of mascara.

2. Curl your lashes. (Shiseido Eyelash Curler, $19, available at Sephora)

3. Squeeze a tiny drop of lash glue onto the back of your hand. If you have sensitive eyes, opt for latex-free lash glue like Revlon’s Precision Lash Adhesive which is much gentler on your pretty peepers. It’s best to test out lash glue before an event to avoid any reactions – trust me, I learned this the hard way! (Revlon Precision Lash Adhesive, $6, available at Shoppers Drug Mart)

4. Pick up a lash cluster using slant-edge tweezers. Grip the cluster close to the base, not by the tip which could tear the lashes, and dip the base into the glue. Wait about 15 seconds to allow the glue to get sticky. (Tweezerman Stainless Steel Slant Tweezers, $22, available at Sephora)

5. Tilt your head back so you can see your lash line in the mirror. Starting at the outer corner of your eye, stick the lash cluster in the first open spot you see between your lashes, wiggling it in so it sits right on the lash line. (MAC 30 Lash, $19)

6. Working inward, add a couple more clusters on any open spots

7. Made a mistake? Gently pull off the cluster with your fingers, peel glue off the base, dab it into the glue and stick it back on.

8. Once you have finished both eyes, leave your lashes alone to set for 5 minutes, then sweep on black mascara to marry the real and fake lashes. Avoid a thickening mascara, which can clump on fakes.  (Lancôme Hypnôse Drama Mascara, $26, available at Sephora)

9. Prepare for some serious flirt appeal – bet you’ll be tempted to bat your lashes a little more often!
