Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs in Canada

We may have already said goodbye to 2017, but we definitley haven’t taken the time to reflect on our beauty choices from the past year. Between new launches and partnerships, 2017 was an explosion of amazing products new and old. While we know how different everyone’s beauty tastes can be, the claims for the best of the year usually come as a common agreement. In honour of the year that’s past, we’ve narrowed down our list of the best of the best beauty finds of 2017.

We went Canadian with the lips category and chose Toronto-based Bite Beauty. In 2017, Bite Beauty launched its first liquid lipstick formula that is nothing short of amazing. It’s highly pigmented, very nourishing, and comes in 20 unique shades – making it a must-have for all lipstick lovers.

When it comes to blush, we had to go with Hourglass’ Ambient Lighting Blush Collection. This beautiful collection gives off a subtle highlight, giving the cheeks a beautiful glow without looking too heavy. It’s a buildable product, so it’s super easy to work with.

The perfect combination of colour and structure, Physicians Formula bronzers are long-lasting giving you a subtle tan all year around. Physicians Formula is known for its flattering shades that work with every skin tone.

Drugstore brands are upping their game when it comes to quality products, and we are happy to say that Milani stole our hearts with its Strobelight Glow Powders. This collection is not only $10, but it’s available in seven different shades that you can blend together to create the ultimate glow.

Regardless if it’s a single or palette format, Color Pop stole the show when it came to eyeshadows in 2017. Color Pop’s Super Shock Shadows feature a creamy, long-lasting formula giving you an amazing payoff that will turn any boring look into a glam look in an instant.

Liquid Eyeliner
For the perfect winged liner, you need a liner that’s rich in colour and smudge-proof. Stila not only makes one of the best liquid eyeliners with the finest tip for precision on the market but its liquid liners are 100%  cry proof. The Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner comes in a variety of colours from the traditional black to a cool white.

When it comes to head-turning lashes, we’ve only got eyes for L’Oreal’s Voluminous Lash Paradise. If the incredible price tag wasn’t enough to have us using it time and time again, the fact that one coat leaves us with ultra voluptuous volume and length certainly does.

Beauty Jobs – Hair Volume

Thursday, March 17th, 2016

beauty-nine-to-five - beauty jobs in canada

I’m quite lucky in that I have normal to thick hair.  But that being said, having a bit of extra volume is always desirable.  There are so many voluminizing products on the market now, so finding something to work with your hair type is easier than ever.

Shampoos and Conditioners

Tresemme recently came out with a new range called Beauty-Full Volume.  The trick with this system is to apply the conditioner first, followed by shampoo.  This means that the conditioner won’t weight hair down.  Your hair will be touchably soft, and extra bouncy.

L’Oreal Fibralogy is my absolute favourite range.  It works to increase the thickness of the hair gradually over time.  So the more you use it, the thicker your hair will appear.  It leaves your hair feeling super soft and voluminized, without feeling heavy.  I find this to be the best option, especially if your hair is prone to falling flat when you have second-day hair.

Bumble and Bumble also have the Thickening range, which helps cleanse away any chemical buildup, while creating body and volume.  There is also the (newer) Full Potential range, that not only creates volume, but works to strengthen and prevent further breakage by up to 50%.

Shampoos and conditioners not doing enough on their own?  Tresemme also has the Volume and Softness Hair Maximizer, which you apply to damn hair for extra hold and volume.  It’s a cream so there isn’t any of the crunchiness generally associated with thickening mousses.

L’Oreal Fibralogy also has a Thickening Booster on the market that you apply after shampoo, but before conditioner.  It can be used up to twice a week, and the very concentrated ingredient list works to penetrate individual hairs to allow for optimal expansion.

Lastly is the pièce de résistance.  It’s the most expensive item in this post, but I had a sample over Christmas and fell in love.  The Full Potential Hair Preserving Booster Spray by Bumble and Bumble can reduce hair loss up to 50%, while being a profession grade hair strengthener.

Beauty Jobs – Loving The Lob

Thursday, January 14th, 2016

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs

Most of us get stuck in a rut when it comes to our hair.  Whether you’ve had the same straight long locks for years, or if a ponytail is your daily do, it’s hard to break out of that comfort zone.

And when it comes to “on-trend” hair styles, it seems that things change so quickly.  But luckily, the “lob” (long bob) has been here for quite a while now, and it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere.

There are three on-trend ways to rock the lob for 2016, which will look super fresh.  First involves cutting in shaggy layers.  This very rock-chick look is great for those of you with thin hair, as it creates a lot of volume and fullness.  And if you have natural wave or curl, it works amazingly as separating the curls and keeping them bouncy and light.  Adding something like the Bumble and Bumble Curl Conditioning Mousse is idea for this relaxed look.

Second is essentially the complete opposite; keeping nice and blunt ends.  This sleek look is great for those who aren’t ready for a huge change.  With its classic cut, this timeless look is something you can look back on years later and still be happy with. The L’oreal Nutri-Sleek Smoothing Cream Care is perfect for keeping your locks shiny and straight.

Did you give into the craze last year and already cut a lob, but are ready to change it up for 2016?  Then try adding bangs.  Cutting in jagged bangs (especially when they’re parted in the middle) adds a cool, trendy vibe to an otherwise simple look.

Not in the mood for a cut, but still want a change for 2016?  Then unicorn hair is for you!  This (odd) trend is not for the faint of heart, though.  It involves dying your hair a variety of pastel shades, particularly pink, purple, blue and green.  If that look is a bit too much, then dying your hair any pastel colour is still very on trend, and can change up your entire look.  L’oreal Liquid Chalk and Manic Panic are great temporary colour options.

Beauty Jobs – Let’s Get Hairy

Monday, November 30th, 2015

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobsdamaged_hair

Brace yourself: Winter is coming.  It’s cold.  Like really cold.  And most of us just want to throw on a toque, bear the weather, and call it a day.  But this doesn’t always result in the most flattering hair (bringing back the same hat head we had in second grade).  But there are a few items we can use to try and keep our locks at bay during the colder months.

I’m actually a huge fan of L’oreal when it comes to hair care.  One of my go-to’s for the last few years has been the Total Repair hair mask.  Use it every few washes, and leave it in for about 10 minutes or so (while you belt out Adele’s new album).  It works to detangle, soften, and condition you locks, and is often on sale for under $10.  And while the entire Extraordinary hair range is amazing, the penetrating oil serum is a must have.  The oils deeply nourish and transform dull, dry hair, leaving it looking silky and touchably soft (a la Selena Gomez).

3 4

Now that the humidity is long gone, a lot of us also lose volume in our hair.  The L’oreal Fibralogy range is great at adding volume without making it feel stiff or stripped, like many other shampoos can.  It works to gradually create denser, more voluminous locks after continued use.  The new Bumble and Bumble Full Potential Hair Preserving Booster Spray works in a similar fashion, and even prevents future breakage.

5 6

Lastly, remember to use heat and UV protectants.  When it’s freezing cold, we often opt for the blow dyer more often than letting it dry au natural.  But this can be damaging in the long term.  The Tresemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer spray is enriched with vitamins, and protects hair up to 230 degrees Celsius.  Lastly, even in the winter, the sun’s beams can be intense.  Choose something like the Bumble and Bumble Hairdressers Invisible Oil Primer to combat the ill effects.

1. L’oreal Total Repair 5 Mask, available at Shoppers Drug Mart

2. L’oreal Extraordinary Penetrating Oil Serum, available at Shoppers Drug Mart

3. L’oreal Fibralogy Shampoo and Conditioner, available at Shoppers Drug Mart

4. Bumble and Bumble Full Potential Spray, $72, available at Sephora

5. Tresemme Thermal creations Heat Tamer Spray, available at Wal-Mart

6. Bumble and Bumble Hairdressers Oil Primer, $29, available at Sephora

Beauty Jobs – Every Day Essentials

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobsede

Everyone—whether you consider yourself beauty connoisseur or not—has a daily routine. Whether it’s drinking a cup of milk or OJ each morning after getting up, or busting some yoga stretches before you leave the house. For some of us, our routine includes an intensive skincare regimen or a full-face of makeup. However, getting into the habit of caring for your skin or wearing makeup on a regular basis can be daunting. With the amount of products and brands on the market, it can be extremely intimidating to start looking for the products that are right for you and you can incorporate into your routine.

If you’re new to the groove and are clueless about where to start or are simply looking to spend less time getting ready in the morning, these products (and those like them) will get you off in the right direction:

Your skin will be essential to cutting down the time you spend getting ready, so the less skin concerns you have, the better. A good cleanser will keep break-outs at bay and rid the skin of impurities. Unless your skin is extremely dry, it’s usually safe to opt for an oil-free cleanser which will deep-clean, purging the pores of like Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Acne Wash. Those with oily skin tend to fare well with foaming cleansers.

Many people argue that toners are not an absolutely essential part of a good skincare routine, and though I can understand why, I respectfully disagree. Not only will a good toner soften, soothe, balance, and energize your skin, in some cases it can also serve as a mild exfoliant and moisturizer. It pairs perfectly with a cleanser by effectively restoring its pH balance, and prepping the skin for the added hydration of a moisturizer.

Once your skin is cleansed and toned you can finish off your daily skincare routine by moisturizing the face. It is best to choose a lightweight moisturizer which will hydrate the skin without feeling heavy to avoid causing irritation. Ole Henrinksen’s Sheer Transformation moisturizer has a light, whipped consistency which will effectively penetrate the skin without making your pores feel clogged.

For those of us who have a tendency to look sleepy or sickly, mascara is a life-saver. Let’s be real—not everyone has the time or patience to do a full-on eyeshadow look or cat eye in the morning. Mascara however, has the magical ability to make your eyes pop and add extra oomph to your lashes, which can be extra necessary for those who, for a variety of reasons, can sometimes look like we don’t have any. For those who are unsure about how to navigate the exciting world of eye makeup or just don’t have the time in the morning, it’s a pretty solid start.

Since the age of 14, I’ve answered the “what five things would you bring with you on a deserted island?” question the same way and blush has always been number three. In fact, if I had to choose one piece of makeup I could not go without, it would be blush. Why? Because will give your face health and vitality, that’s why! Although I can sometimes resemble the walking dead after a rough night, the right rosy shade of blush made the biggest difference in the world, I looked alive again. Of course, after developing this habit, I quickly discovered a few favourites. Wet n Wild’s Color Icon blushes are one of those hidden treasures I rave about to anyone who will listen. You can never go wrong with that level of pigmentation—especially not for $3 a pop!

Lip Balm

Whether you’re a lipstick person or not, hydrated lips are a must. Chap stick or lip balm are everyone’s best friend, come rain or shine really, but especially during the colder months. What’s even better is because chap stick comes in small packages they really will be your go-to—you can fit them anywhere. And did I mention that the infamous Burt’s Bees also carries tinted lip balms? As if this little gem could get any more awesome!

OPTIONAL: Concealer

If you have skin concerns such as acne, discoloration, or hyper-pigmentation, you might feel as though you need a little extra coverage. While some might opt for a foundation, others find that a good concealer does the trick, looks a bit more natural, and saves them time. In order to make it effective, it’s best to find a concealer with a creamy consistence which distribute evenly, sit well on the skin, and match your complexion. NARS’ uber-popular Radiant Creamy Concealer will do the trick and gets extra brownie points for its wide range of shades.

1. Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Facial Cleanser, C$7 available at Wal-Mart

2. Clarins Toning Lotion, $C33 available at Sephora

3. Ole Henriksen Sheer Transformation, C$18 available at Sephora

4. L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara, C$11 available at select department stores

5. Wet n Wild Color Icon Blush, C$3 available at Wal-Mart

6. Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm, C$5 available at select department stores

7. NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, C$35 available at Sephora

Beauty Jobs – Fighting Back Against Raccoon Eyes

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2015

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobsinsp

There is no look less attractive than that of raccoon eyes.  I’m talking about the black flakes, smudged mascara all around your eyes that looks like you’ve been up all night watching The Notebook.  For some of us, raccoon eyes are something that unfortunately happens a lot, but there are a few ways to ensure it stays in place all day.

1 2

First, if you’re prone to mascara flaking, then opt for waterproof mascara.  Something like the L’oreal Telescopic is a great option and will stay on all day.  The Tarte Lash, Camera, Splashes is another favourite.

Tubular mascaras are also another great bet, as the “tubes” coat each lash, and remove almost like individual false lashes.  While it may sound odd, this formulation is guaranteed to be smudge-proof, flake-proof, and water resistant.  The Blinc Mascara in Ampflied is one of the best on the market.

Another option is to prime your eyelids, and under eye area before you apply mascara.  The Too Faced Shadow Insurance has always been a personal favourite.  This will not only keep your shadows in place, but also works to keep the oils on your face at bay, which often causes the smudging in the first place.

Use a separate bottom lash mascara.  If you find that most of the smudging in on your lower lash line, it could be that your upper lash mascara just isn’t cutting it.  Brands now have special mascaras designed specifically for bottom lashes that come with smaller wands and a different formula.  The Clinique Bottom Lash mascara is one of the best out there.

Lastly, and this is probably a given, don’t touch your eyes!  A lot of us inadvertently rub near our eye area when we are tired or stressed, but keep those greasy fingers at bay!

1. L’oreal Telescopic Mascara, available at Shoppers Drug Mart

2. Tarte Lights, Camera, Splashes, $25, available at Sephora

3. Blinc Amplified Mascara, $30, available at Sephora

4. Too Faced Shadow Insurance, $24, available at Sephora

5. Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara, $13, available at Sephora

Beauty Jobs – How to Avoid Eyeshadow/Liner Creasing at Work

Tuesday, September 29th, 2015

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs

Inspiration Image [256858]

Inspiration Image courtesy of Shiseido

Creasing eyeshadow and eyeliner are the absolute worse for any makeup look, especially at the workplace. You do not want to walk around looking like panda eyes for your entire shift. Touching up is also too much of a hassle. Thus, it is very important for you to use and choose the right makeup products to prevent creasing. There are many options out in the market that help prevent this issue from happening.

Here are my 2 favourite ways to prevent any sort of creasing throughout the day!

Go Waterproof/Smudge-proof!

Waterproof and Smudge-proof makeup can do wonders for those that often suffer from creasing. The formula within these products makes sure that once it is applied, the makeup will be long lasting and will not budge whatsoever. So within your regular makeup routine, make sure to include products like waterproof eyeliner, mascara and cream eyeshadows.

This is a crucial step that many people tend to skip. It is always a good idea to prime your lids before applying any sort of eye makeup. It not only helps to ensure a smoother application, but also prevents any sort of creasing on the eyelid and below the waterline.

Here are some of my favourite products to use to prevent creasing:

1 [256859] 2 [256861] 3 [256863] 4 [256860] 5 [256862]

1. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion-Original, $24, available at Sephora

2. Too Faced Shadow Insurance, $24, available at Sephora

3. Kat Von D Tattoo Eyeliner, $23, available at Sephora

4. Sephora Collection Contour Matte Gel Eyeliner Waterproof, $18, available at Sephora

5. L’Oreal Paris Infalliable Shadows, $7, available at Walmart

Beauty Jobs – Summertime Sadness

Monday, August 31st, 2015

There were gorgeous temperatures last week here in Toronto—low 20’s, mostly cloudy, with a light breeze.  I was so excited in preparing for fall that I didn’t even realize the heat wave that enveloped most of the summer was back upon us. However, I realize that most of you are still trying to get the most out of summer before the cooler temps set in.  For today’s post, I thought I’d share some of my top ways to seamlessly transition from summer to fall.

While I generally hate summer, I do love the dewy, pinky hues that compliment the warm weather.  And while bold berry lips and matte foundations seem to be fall staples, they can be a bit harder to pull off.  The problem with trying to transition between seasons is that there is a pretty big juxtaposition between the two trends: luminous to matte, glossy to satin, and natural to berry.

In the early parts of September, opt for satin finishes when it comes to foundation or concealers.  They have a very natural skin-like appearance without looking too caked-on.  Satin finishes are easily the most versatile as well.  You can mix in liquid highlighters or primers, something like the Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow Primer or L’oreal Magic Lumi Light Infusing primer.Or, for when the cooler temps set in, you can add a bit of matteness with a translucent setting powder—something like the Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless pressed powder works well.

1 2

In terms of lip colours, darker lips can be scary, but easily wearable.  Opt for more sheer or glossy formulas for darker colours.  This will give you the appearance of a more seasonal appropriate look without the intensity of a matte finish.  The Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Berry is an essential for fall, but the Narslipgloss in Sixties Fan is another great option.

Lastly, a good way to transition your eye makeup to the next season is to deepen up the light browns and pinks you used throughout summer.  Colours like Mac Cranberry and Embark are great plumy reddish toned shades.  These will pair perfectly with a nude or pink summertime lip, as the cooler and pink undertones of the shadows will compliment the lip perfectly.

Beauty Jobs – The Ultimate 2-Step Cleansing Routine

Thursday, August 20th, 2015

Inspiration Image source.

The 2-step cleansing routine is my absolute beauty ritual.  To ensure that my face is clean and clear of makeup, I always wash my face twice using two different cleansing products. This routine not only makes sure you get a deep cleansing, but it also helps your skin absorb whatever you put on afterwards a lot better. Ever since I have started using this routine, my skin’s condition has significantly improved!

Here are the 2 major steps!

Makeup Removing Agent

During this step, the main thing that you are focusing on is removing all of your makeup. The products to use at this stage are simply based on personal preference. I would suggest you to use an eye and lip makeup remover first. Then, follow up by removing makeup off the rest of your face by using a cleansing oil/milk/cream/wipes/water. Massage the product all over the skin and rinse off with water. However, we are not done yet….time for step 2!

Final Cleansing

This step is very crucial and is usually missed within everyone’s routines. For this step, simply use your daily facial cleanser. Personally, I prefer to use a foam formula for this part. This step not only gives your skin that deep cleanse, but it also ensures that the products you used in step 1 are completely removed from the skin. Sometimes, using products like a cleansing oil/milk/cream alone may leave a greasy film residue after cleansing. This is why it is important to use a second cleansing agent. After you have done this step, pat your face dry and follow with your daily skincare routine.

My personal recommendations for the 2-step cleansing routine!
