Beauty Jobs – 5 Cruelty Free Brands to Know Now

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs in Canada

In today’s cosmetics landscape, brands don’t have to strive to work the best, but they also have to be the best for the environment and the consumers that use them. Which is why we’re so happy to see that more and more brands are banning animal testing before putting their products into the market, which is why we wanted to share five cool traditional brands that are shaking up the cruelty-free beauty industry.

Cruelty-free means: A product and its ingredients weren’t tested on animals. PETA has a list of companies and brands that pledge to never to sell in China since the requirement to sell cosmetics in this country requires that they are tested on animals in order to have their products available in the Chinese market. You can check the list here.

If you want to know if your favourite brand is cruelty-free, keep reading…

E.L.F Cosmetics
We got super excited when we found out that one of our favourite drugstore brands is cruelty-free. E.L.F has great and affordable makeup brushes, blushes and eye shadows, the best part, great quality for a small price. We love the baked Highlighter, as it’s the perfect way to get a serious glow during winter.

Josie Maran
Created by a supermodel that was looking to create a cosmetic line that actually does some good, Josie Maran is a pioneer when comes to Argan Oil. She is not only the queen of incorporating Argan Oil into all of her products but her brand 100% against animal testing. Josie’s must try: Whipped Mud Mask – it’s a scent-free product that work for every skin type.

Charlotte Tilbury
In the high-end department, we have the amazing celebrity makeup artist that wanted your go-to brand to be both luxurious and good for the environment at the same time. Not to mention Charlotte is against using animals as test components.  Tilbury’s Magic Cream is the celebrity secret, but we believe that the Matte Revolution lipstick will steal your heart; it has a smooth application and is long-lasting.

Cake Beauty
This Toronto-based brand does a great job at being 100% cruelty-free and develops the most delicious scented creams. They are manufactured in Canada and UK and they have cute packaging. The everything balm will be your best friend during winter, is a life savour for your lips, skin, elbows and even lashes!

Yes To Tomatoes
This brand has a great mission of creating great products without compromising on ingredients. Not to mention the packaging is made of recycled material and like all the products on our list, this brand does not test on animals. It’s a natural line made with ingredients that we can actually pronounce (score!) and can be found in your kitchen. The detoxifying charcoal mud mask should be on your list of must-have items.

Did your favourite cosmetic brand make the list? Let us know in the comments below!

Beauty Jobs – What Beauty Products to Bring in Your Carry-On

Tuesday, March 1st, 2016

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty JobsInspiration Image

When you go on a business trip, you are often only allowed to bring a small carry-on bag aboard the flight. This means that your beauty bag must be small, compact and resourceful at the same time! According to the TSA, all liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes must be less than 100ml and placed in a 1 quart-sized bag.

Here are the top must-have items in your business trip beauty bag (all TSA-approved)!

1. Ole Henriksen The Clean Truth Cleansing Cloths: Brightening, $10, available at Sephora

This pack comes with 10 cleansing cloths that remove all traces of dirt, oil and makeup. It is from Ole Henriksen’s Vitamin C line and helps to brighten uneven skin tone while cleansing the skin. It is also extremely hydrating and easy to use on the plane!

2. First Aid Beauty Vitamin Hydrating Mist, $20, available at Sephora

Being on the plane for a long flight can take a toll on the skin. The air is extremely dry in a plane. Use this hydrating mist to bring some moisture back into the skin. It is an excellent refresher and soothes the skin from environmental aggressors.

3. Josie Maran 100 percent Pure Argan Oil Light 0.5 oz, $20, available at Sephora

When you feel that your skin is getting too dry from the plane’s environment, take a few drops of this product and massage it into the skin. This facial oil helps to hydrate, improve skin’s texture, soothe and balance the skin.

4. Dr. Jart+ Brightening Infusion Hydrogel Mask, $9, available at Sephora

What to do during a long flight? Give yourself a free facial by using a hydrogel mask! This one by Dr. Jart+ helps to brighten and rehydrate the skin. Since this mask is hydrogel, it adheres to the skin much better than a regular paper mask. Leave it on for 20-30 minutes and remove to see glowing skin!

5. Bumble and bumble Prêt-à-Powder 0.5 oz, $16, available at Sephora

A long flight means messy and greasy hair when you get off the plane. Use this multitasking hair powder by Bumble and bumble. It acts as a dry shampoo, volumizer and style primer. It is great for all hair types as well! Simply take a bit of product and directly place it all over the roots. Then, shake the product through your hair and see instant results!

Beauty Jobs – Multipurpose Beauty Products You Can Use Throughout the Workday

Tuesday, November 10th, 2015

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty JobsInspiration Image

Carrying all your beauty products to work for touch-ups can be a real pain. This situation is particularly worse for those that use a large variety of products in their routine. To save not only application time, but also room in your bag, you can opt to take some multipurpose beauty products with you to use throughout the day for touchups. These products have more than one usage and are convenient to have in your bag for any sort of outings.

Here are some of my personal recommendations for multipurpose beauty products!

1. Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Stick, $50, available at Sephora

Designed to be a stick foundation, this product is super convenient to bring along with you to work in your makeup bag. It is a multitasking product that can also act as a contour and concealer stick. Simply purchase one that is a few shades darker and use that to contour throughout the day. To use as a typical foundation/concealer, purchase one that matches to your skin tone!

2. Benefit Cosmetics Benetint Cheek & Lip Stain, $39, available at Sephora

Just like how the product is named, this item can be used as both a lip stain and a blusher. Packaged into a nail polish-like bottle, simply draw a few strokes on the cheek or on the lips for a natural red tint. You can just blend out the product using your fingers!

3. Josie Maran Argan Balm, $52, available at Sephora

This argan oil balm is by far the best product to have if you want something that can be used on the body, hair and face. Designed as the solid form of the argan oil, it can be applied practically anywhere that is dehydrated or dry. It can be used on peeling skin, rough patches on the body, as a lip balm or as a split-end treatment for the hair.

4. Sephora Collection Colorful Shadow & Liner, $18, available at Sephora

This product is be used as eyeliner or blended out on the eyelids as eye shadow. With such a large range of colours and finishes, this product is the ultimate multipurpose makeup product for the eyes. It is also waterproof, long wearing and resistant to heat!

Beauty Jobs – Face Mists to Keep in Your Desk Drawer

Friday, October 2nd, 2015

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs

If you’re like me, and you have super oily skin, working in an atmosphere with drier air and cooler temps can be a blessing.  But for the average person, trying to maintain a moisturized, healthy complexion can be a pain.  Here are a few products that can be used throughout the day to help.

Face mists are important in keeping your skin’s pH level balanced.  Ones like the Caudalie Beauty Elixir, Fresh Rose Floral Toner, and Josie Maran Nirvana Hydrating Treatment Mists are ideal for dry skinned gals.  Made up of essential oils, floral waters, and multi-fruit complexes, these mists work to firm and plump skin, while delivering essential nutrients to boost hydration levels.  These mists can be used alone, in addition to your skin care routine, or over makeup throughout the day.

1 [99023] 2 [99025] 3 [99028]

The Boscia Balancing Facial Tonic is better suited for combination skin.  While the mist maintains hydration levels, it also works to purify skin and absorb excess sebum (oil).  The Dr. Jart Pore Medic Pore Minish Mist is also great for combo or oily skin, as it refreshes and detoxifies the skin, while tightening pores and controlling oil by using a mix of mineral waters, evermat, and witch hazel.

4 [99024] 5 [99026]

Lastly, there are mists that help reduce redness and irritation that can result from dry office conditions.  The First Aid Beauty Vitamin Hydrating Mist is perfect for sensitive skin, as it is alcohol free, combats environmental aggressors, and sooths and hydrates skin.  Similarly, the Jurlique Calendula Redness Rescue Calming Mist works to calm and restore skin’s natural properties.  It refreshes stressed out skin with the use of chamomile and calendula.

6 [99029] 7 [99027]

1. Caudalie Beauty Elixir, C$19-53, available at Sephora

2. Fresh Rose Floral Toner, C$47, available at Sephora

3. Josie Maran Nirvana Hydrating Treatment Mists, C$48, available at Sephora

4. Boscia Balancing Facial Tonic, C$30, available at Sephora

5. Dr. Jart Pore Medic Pore Minish Mist, C$36, available at Sephora

6. First Aid Beauty Vitamin Hydrating Mist, $20, available at Sephora

7. Jurlique Calendula Redness Rescue Calming Mist, C$44, available at Sephora

Beauty Jobs – How to Look Awake

Monday, May 12th, 2014

Inspiration Image Awake

Fake it ‘til you make it – a tired and true philosophy often put into practice on those oh-so-hard-to-get-out-of-bed mornings. Being tired is one thing – but looking tired is quite another. Luckily, there are ways to conceal those telling signs of fatigue thanks to these helpful tips and tricks:

Josie Maran Daily Moisturizer

1. An insta-skin booster? Massage cream into skin to create a dewy glow. We recommend: Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 47, $38 available at Sephora.

Becca Luminous Skin Colour Ultra Sheer Foundation

2. Keep makeup light with a sheer foundation like Becca Luminous Skin Color Ultra Sheer Foundation SPF 25+, $51 available at Sephora. Or if you need more coverage, opt for a heavier formula applied in a thin layer. Avoid too much powder, which can make skin look dull.

Buxom Inside Eyeliner

3. Take redness out of eyes with a couple eye drops. Line the inner rims of the eyes with a beige or white pencil (we recommend Buxom Inside Eyeliner in Pearl, $18 available Sephora) and always curl your lashes to open up the eyes.

Step 4 Collage awake

4. Enliven your skin tone with a pink or peach shade of blush. Apply it right on the apples of your cheeks and dust it lightly on the tip of your nose and under your chin. We recommend: Shiseido Luminizing Satin Face Colour in Carnation, $38 available at Sephora or Nars Blush in Orgasm, $33 available at Sephora.

Step 5 Collage awake

5. For lips, stick with sheer formulas that add a hint of colour and shine – natural but not so neutral that they blend into your face. We recommend: Laura Mercier Lip Glacé in Bare Pink, $29 available at Sephora; Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss in Pink Beige, $28 available at Sephora; Clinique Long Last Glosswear in Guavagold, $19 available at Sephora.

Vancouver Beauty Careers – The one Makeup Product You NEED This Summer

Monday, June 3rd, 2013

Walking into Sephora or a drugstore around this time of year can get pretty intimidating, with all of the new Summer collections it’s hard to know what products are worth the hype. If you only invest in one product to update your Summer makeup collection, make it a gel blush or cheek stain. Gel blushes and cheek stains are perfect for the humid temperatures, the sheer wash of colour will stay locked all day long, no need to stress about powders caking or melting off. Here are a few of my favourites that are my summer must-haves!

1. Josie Maran, Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelée in ‘Poppy Paradise’, $29.
This coconut water infused gel blush lasts up to 14 hours, the bonus is it keeps your skin hydrated with the benefits of Vitamin E Argan Oil. The bright pinky red shade will instantly brighten up your makeup look, a small swipe goes a long way!

2. Tarte, Cheek Stain, $36
If you’re looking for a natural flush, Tarte’s cheek stains are the way to go. The water based gel is alcohol and oil-free so it won’t dry out your skin or clog your pores. My favourite shade is ‘natural beauty’ a sheer berry rose that compliments just about any skin tone.

3. Benefit, Benetint, $36
Benefit’s original product always gets a lot of hype, but I can promise you that this product will deliver! This multipurpose rose tinted cheek and lip stain gives a sheer natural flush, almost as if you’ve been blushing for hours.

Beauty Jobs – Saving Face

Friday, April 26th, 2013

I am pretty conscious of what I put in my mouth, as I am a firm believer you are what you eat. A lifelong fascination with the science of nutrition has me scarfing roasted tomatoes, knowing the phytochemical lycopene, the carotenoid giving the fruit its juicy red colour, is a powerful antioxidant that’s super good for my lungs, liver, colon and skin. (Before I go any further, please note: I love a gooey cheeseburger and fries any day of the week; life is all about balance!)

The more I got into nutrition, the more I started to pay attention to what was going on my body as much as what was going in it. After all, your skin is your body’s largest organ. Being a massive lover of beauty loot and a junkie of all things beautifying, I could never eliminate glowy bronzer, lash-bat inducing mascara or luscious lipstick. Luckily, all of these products are fairly easy to find and love in a natural state, but I had a bit more trial and error when it came to foundation. Doing all the leg work for you, here’s a few of the best.

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation SPF 15, $48 at Sephora. Photo courtesy of
A full coverage foundation often looks, well, full coverage. Although this formula is thick, it feels light as air and blends as seamlessly as Alexa Chung’s ombré dye job. Telling no lies, it really does power through my 12-hour days, from an 8am coffee call to a serious streetcar hustle that made me more than break a sweat.

Josie Maran Tinted Moisturizer, $46 at Sephora. Photo courtesy of
A little goes a long way with this buildable formula, meaning you don’t need to gob it on to see results like some other sheerer tinted moisturizers. It imparts a dewy finish and boasts many skin saving ingredients, with its star being organic argan oil.

Korres Quercetin & Oak Antiaging Foundation, $51, at Sephora. Photo courtesy of
The first to use a retinol-alternative in their skincare line, this Greece-based company laced their newest foundation with quercetin, a standout skin-smoothing ingredient that improves skins texture and tone even after you’ve washed your face. A gorgeous, natural looking radiance is left along with a smoother, less lined complexion.

Beauty Jobs – Everything’s Coming Up Roses

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

Ahh, fresh roses. With a romantic connotation and one of the world’s most recognized scents, roses can be found in endless forms, from marmalade to Chinese medicine. Roses are also a lovely way to visually enhance floral arrangements, but their most beautiful use is in beauty products as they enhance skin and smell gorgeous.

The Body Shop Moroccan Rose Body Butter, $20, The Body Shop.
With rare, precious rose oils that have been hand-picked, this luxurious body butter feels luscious yet light and leaves skin super soft and soothed.

Fresh Rose Face Mask, $63, available at Sephora.
This cooling and refreshing gel is one step away from fully bathing in rose petals; an entire 50% of the formula is pure rosewater, and if that wasn’t enough, it also packs in real rose petals for the freshest, most energized results.

Dior Crème de Rose Smoothing Plumping Lip Balm, $30.
This balm is sooo creamy and delicious! Dior’s own garden roses are used to create this rich, never sticky, softly tinted pink, subtly scented balm that leaves lips so moisturizing they’re plumped. It’s also housed in the most beautiful little vintage-looking pot AND has SPF 10.

Josie Maran Rosey Mist – Refreshing Rose Water, $29, Sephora.
Use this light, yummy versatile spray as a refresher throughout the day, as a toner after cleansing, to add moisture and nourishment before bed or even as a makeup setting spray.
