beauty-nine-to-five - beauty jobsInspiration Image

Whether it’s a post-work patio session, date night, or a party, there are many reasons you might be in need of a P.M. touch up. Nobody wants to be lugging around their entire makeup stash on the daily, so finding the perfect versatile palette is a must for the woman on the run. A grouping with a large colour range allows for a sweep of more natural shades in the daytime, and the ability to smoke out your outer corners or define your crease by night. It’s also important to keep packaging in mind when picking out your power palette. Stick to sleek, travel-ready exteriors that will easily slip into your purse without adding bulk.  Here are some of our favourite palettes to help you transition from day-to-night in record time!

beauty-nine-to-five

rsz_scarjo

Nothing says sexy quite like a smoky eye, but this season is all about giving your eyes the Midas touch. While metallic lids have been popping up on the runways and red carpets for what seems like forever, there’s something flirty and ethereal about this stunning metallic effect. Here’s how to make your peepers shine like a 24-karat gold sparkler.

Prep your eyelid with a quick drying primer; this will help keep your shadow in place long after the sun has gone down. Apply a nude or light beige shadow as a base to make blending things easier. Next, use a shimmery brown shadow and sweep it across your entire lid, blending along the crease.

Use a separate brush to apply a gold or bronzed metallic shadow overtop. Maybelline Color Tattoo in Breaking Bronze is long lasting, and has great pigmentation. Line your eyes with gold liner using a thin brush, and add a bit of extra gold glitter with your fingers. This can get a bit messy, so hold a tissue under your eye to protect from any falling glitter. If glitter does get on your lower lash line you can either incorporate it into your look or use a make up removing wipe to polish things up. Finish your bombshell look with curled lashes, and a couple swipes of volumizing mascara.

While I wouldn’t easily recommend this look for a day at the office, it’ll certainly be a hit when you’re out dancing up a storm during girl’s night. Keep the rest of your make up balanced with flawless foundation, light pink gloss and a hint of blush.

Montreal Beauty Jobs – Barely There Makeup

Friday, April 5th, 2013

This season, my motto is “bare is better” when it comes to beauty. The neutral look has been seen all over the runways and is a trend that can take you from day to night.

Skin
To achieve sheer beauty you have to go skin deep, and that means finding the perfect moisturizer, primer, and foundation. Now I know what you’re thinking: that’s a lot of product to be wearing in the heat. So skip the 3 step routine and substitute with the perfect BB cream or tinted moisturizer. For great coverage with a matte finish, try Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream SPF 35 ($39, available at Sephora). The multitasking formula moisturizes while controlling your skins natural oils and contains SPF to protect against the suns harsh rays. If you’re looking for a more lightweight product, try Laura Mercier’s Tinted Illumination tinted moisturizer to give your skin a dewy fresh glow. And instead of caking on heavy powder, finish off with a lightweight translucent powder.

Eyes
Soft neutral shadows are a staple for spring, that being said, so is the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette ($50, available at Sephora). Containing 12 shimmering shades, you can achieve a subtle day look, a smoky night out look and everything in between. After applying your shadows, smudge a soft brown pencil liner only on your upper lash line. Curl your lashes and apply a volumizing mascara, pulling your lashes outward to open up your eyes.

Lips
I like to see a neutral eye paired with shades of soft pinks or taupe on the lips. A sheer lipstick or gloss is a perfect compliment to a natural makeup look and is flattering on every skin tone while looking youthful and fresh. Find a tube you love like the Nars Satin Lipstick in Honolulu Honey ($26, available at Sephora) and never leave home without it this spring.

Nails
If you’re like me, your nail colour will change according to your outfit. Such a hassle trying to match! So, go nude and you cant go wrong. I’ve been loving the OPI ‘My Vampire is Buff’ polish for that perfect soft colour with a bit of sparkle.

Now that you’ve got all your “bare essentials” you’re ready for spring!

Makeup Artist Jobs – Sunrise Eyes

Monday, April 1st, 2013

(Photos courtesy of Daily MakeoverHaven and Home, Pinterest)

Often missed, yet a beautiful sight, catching the dawning of a new day always proves worth the early rise. A stunning array of fiery oranges, coral pinks and bright yellows that peak from the horizon is not only the visual splendour of a sunrise, but the latest inspiration for beauty looks this spring. A bold wash of blazing colour or a soft blend of warm hues, however you choose to rock it, this palette is a bright idea. From Louis Vuitton to Dior, we share how to replicate these runway looks that are worth the rise and shine:

Peter Som
The eyes are the horizon with this runway look, with a blend of vibrant orange, soft peach and pastel yellow. Add a couple coats of black mascara to add definition. We recommend: Make Up For Ever Pure Pigments in ‘No. 4 Orange’, $20, available at Sephora; Benefit Longwear Powder Shadow in ‘It’s Complicated’, $20, available at Sephora; Illamasqua Powder Eye Shadow in ‘Hype’, $20 available at Sephora; CoverGirl LashBlast Length Mascara, $9, available at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Louis Vuitton
A wash of muted peach paired with sultry black eyeliner created a bright, elegant look that played well with the fun, citrus collection at Louis Vuitton. Be sure to add several coats of volumizing mascara for mega-impact. We recommend: Sephora Collection Colourful Mono Eyeshadow in ‘Sun Kissed 78’, $5; Dolce & Gabbana The Kohl Pencil Intense Kohl Eye Crayon in ‘True Black 1’, $30, available at Sephora; Clinique High Impact Extreme Volume Mascara, $20, available at Sephora.

Dior
Okay, this look may be a tad extreme for everyday. Forgo the crystals and add a splash of bold tangerine shadow all over lids that continues in the inner corner and blends in below half of the eye. Finish off with a thin layer of black layer and mascara and you’re a tangerine dream! We recommend: NYX Eye Shadow in ‘Hot Orange’, $6, available at Rexall; Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Liner in ‘Black’, $20, available at Sephora; Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes!, $19 available at Sephora.

Theysken’s Theory
A much softer approach, a halo of peach blush adorns eyes to create a sunny glow that’s totally wearable for all. To mimic the glossy finish of this look, add a touch of peach gloss under lower lashes. Or create an all-over gleam with a cream blush instead. We recommend: NARS Blush in ‘Orgasm’, $29, available at Sephora; Givenchy Hydra Sparkling Magic Lip & Cheek Balm in ‘Peach Glow’, $31, available at Sephora; Joe Fresh Cream Blush in ‘Apricot’, $8, available at Joe Fresh or Real Canadian Superstore.

Montreal Beauty Jobs – Pantone Colour of the Year

Wednesday, December 12th, 2012

We only have a couple more weeks until Tangerine Tango steps aside and Pantone’s latest colour of the year, emerald green, takes over our wardrobes and makeup bags. The luxe shade might be named the 2013 colour of the year but we like to be one step ahead of the trends and can’t wait to test it out for the perfect holiday emerald green eye look. Here are a few of the products we’ll be using to get glamorous for all of our holiday parties.

1. Make Up Forever Pure Pigments in ‘Emerald Green’, $20, available at Sephora
This pigment is packed with bold colour pay off. Using this shade all across your lid is a choice that takes a lot of confidence, if you’re looking for something a bit more subtle we suggest taking a wet angled eyeliner brush and swiping it on your upper lash line for just a hint of green.

2. Stila Sparkle Waterproof Eyeliner in ‘Bright Green’, $22, available at Sephora
We’ve already mentioned that glitter is always a go-to when it comes to festive holiday parties. A little emerald green glitter is sophisticated, flirty and perfect for the season. Keeping the rest of your makeup minimal is the best way to pull off bright sparkly eyeliner.

3. Illamasqua Rubber Finish Nail Varnish, $11, available at Sephora
The easiest way to pull off the emerald green trend is with a fun manicure. This bright shade is the best way to add a pop of colour to a little black dress or a simple casual holiday outfit. This colour would pair great with sparkly cocktail rings or velvet clutches.

4. Shiseido Luminizing Satin Eye Color Trio in ‘Jungle’, $33
These three bold shades are all you need to create a complete emerald eye look. Either choose a single shade to swipe on your lids or use all three to highlight and contour to create perfect definition. These shades push me to experiment with colour and definitely gets me out of my neutral eye and winged liner beauty rut.

Makeup Artist Jobs – Peacock Eyes

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

Bold eye colour was a bonafide 80’s music video essential. Icons such as Madonna, Pat Benatar and Tina Turner pulled off vivid hues with such effortless glam, their pretty peepers enveloped in striking shades of blue and green like second nature. Like most trends, what goes around comes around – peacock eyes strike again. Although the theme takes us back in time to a quite over-the-top era, rest assure this dramatic look has taken a modern twist and is a surefire way to punch up a neutral outfit.
Master the look with these simple steps:

1. Prep lids with an eye primer to help keep eye colour bold and on hold. Add a light dusting of translucent powder for added staying power. (Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, $20, available at Sephora)

2. Line eyes with a bright eye pencil, or blend two colours to create a more dimensional tone. (NARS Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner, $23, available at Sephora)

3. To prevent colour from looking flat, sweep an opalescent shadow onto lids and over liner and layer with a loose shimmer powder on top. Or try a colour-shifting shadow for a multi-dimensional effect. (Kat Von D Shade Shifter Eyeshadow, $16, available at Sephora)

4. Wanna take it up a notch? Using a wet liner brush, dip into loose shimmer powder and sweep onto lower lash line to extend colour around the entire eye. (Annabelle Mineral Pigment Dust, available at Shoppers Drug Mart)

5. Finish with a couple coats of black mascara. (Maybelline Great Lash Big Mascara, $7, available at Shoppers Drug Mart)

Makeup Artist Jobs – TV Beauties

Thursday, November 8th, 2012

We love stealing a few beauty tips from our favourite TV characters. With new shows featuring plenty of smart, quirky and funny ladies there’s no shortage of beauty inspiration.

Kat Dennings as Max in 2 Broke Girls:
Max is known for her snarky attitude and quick wit. We can’t help but be envious of Kat Dennings perfectly full lips which she highlights with a bright red lipstick when on the 2 Broke Girls set. We like NARS’ Lipstick in Flair ($24, available at Sephora), a sheer burnished berry shade, for an almost exact match to Max’s.

(Photo: collider.com)

Jemma Kirke as Jessa on HBO’s GIRLS:
Of all the Girl’s in Lena Dunham’s brilliant show, Jessa’s effortless boho-beauty style has captured our attention in every episode. Her long waves which occasionally include a braid of some sort, match her wild child personality perfectly. To get the same kind of undone waves we like Bumble and Bumble‘s Texture Hair (Un)Dressing Creme ($26) for Jessa’s go-to tousled messy look.

(Photo: Pinterest)

Leighton Meester as Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl:
Blair has certainly grown-up from her days at Constance where she would rarely be seen without a bow headband to compliment her prep school uniform. Now that she has taken over Waldorf designs, sophisticated up-do’s and polished makeup is her signature. For a little extra help at achieving Blair’s shiny brunette strands try Carol’s Daughter Macadamia Shine Mist ($18, available at Sephora), spritz after completing any hairstyle for extra sheen.

(Photo: Wet Paint)

Zooey Deschanel as Jess on New Girl:
We think all girls with glasses should take a few tips from New Girl’s Jess. Big frames are already such a statement that minimal makeup is really all you need. To enhance her bright blue eyes, Jess usually sticks to neutral brown shadows, normally matte shades. We like this bareMinerals duo in ‘The Enlightenment’ ($20, available at Sephora), the lighter colour is perfect to sweep across the entire lid and the chocolate brown is best for defining the crease and outer corner.

Makeup Jobs – Tickled Pink

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

When a cold season sneaks up on us (yet again,) we always resort to wearing bitter colours to match the bitter winds. But this season, change that up and dare yourself to hit the high notes with hot pink! This ultra-fun new beauty trend that popped up on runways from Chanel to Viktor & Rolf gives a whole new meaning to coming down with a case of pink eye. Maybe Urban Decay’s Heavy Metal glitter eyeliner in Catfight is your way to go. So have some fun and make this season a new start, because this bold look that’ll leave you pretty in pink is not for the faint of heart.

Makeup Artist Jobs – Emerald City

Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

I will be the first to admit I hate letting go of Summer, but there is something so tantalizing and fresh about the rich, intense hues of Fall that make the seasonal transition a little less bittersweet. One colour we are obsessed with this Fall: emerald. Luxe, opulent, alluring, this jewel-inspired hue evokes a curious mystique with an intense vibrancy. Smoky eye shadow, stand-out eye liner, metallic lacquered nails – how could we resist emeralds’ enchanting charm? We have rounded up a few of our favourite products in this seductive shade that are sure to bewitch you, too!

1. Illamasqua Nail Varnish in ‘Viridian’, $14

This highly-pigmented Illamasqua formula delivers major payoff: one coat did the trick for luxe colour, shiny metallic finish, fast-drying and chip-resistant polish worthy of your love.

2. Urban Decay Eyeshadow, $18, available at Sephora

Urban Decay recently unveiled their new and improved eye shadow formula, which proved you really can make a good thing great! The colour is rich and vibrant, the texture is velvety yet light, and the finish is multi-dimensional and long-lasting. We love ‘Loaded’, a deep metallic emerald that is the perfect shadow to create a sultry, rich smoky eye.

3. Make Up For Ever Smoky Lash Mascara in ‘#4 Green’, $23, available at Sephora

If subtle is more your style, opt for an emerald coloured mascara such as Make Up For Ever’s Smoky Lash. This all-in-one mascara delivers length, curl, volume and mega pigment. A dense fibre brush separates and coats each and every lash with a pop of colour. J’adore!

4. Joe Fresh Liquid Eyeliner in ‘Emerald’, $8 available at Joe Fresh

For a striking splash of colour, line eyes with the newly launched Joe Fresh Liquid Eyeliner, fittingly called ‘Emerald’. This metallic formula combines gorgeous gleam with mega-colour impact and ultra staying power. An ultra-fine long brush ensures smooth, easy and precise application. A stellar product at such a bargain, this is a definite must-have!
