Beauty Jobs – Trend Alert: Technicolor Hair

Monday, October 16th, 2017

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs in Canada

Forget the days of traditional hair colours, technicolour hair is here to stay. In the past year, pastel hair shades have received a lot of love from fashionistas and influencers, but it’s a look that will work for every girl who loves to play with her look. If colouring your hair on your own makes you nervous, go to a professional and talk to a stylist about temporary and washable options that you can play with for the first time, but if you are ready to try it at home here are some cool brands that will help you explore this colourful world.

Arctic Fox
Favourite of Youtubers like Tasha Leelyn and Hailie Barber, Arctic fox is an American brand that is cruelty-free and vegan. It’s easy to use, won’t damage your hair and is semi-permanent, meaning it will last for a while will completely fade after a month or two. The brand has an amazing cause behind it, it’s a dye for a cause, as the brand donates proceeds to help animal protection institutions.

Clairol Color Crave
This is the easiest semipermanent colour to use of them all. The tube comes with an applicator, so it won’t stain your hands and comes out after one wash. It’s perfect for newbies that want to experiment with colours without any drastic change.

L’Oreal Colorista
L’Oreal was one of the first drugstore brands to bring colourful hues from the salon and to your home.
This baby is semi-permanent, comes out within a couple of washes and very user-friendly so you give yourself some fun highlights or try colouring your entire head. The product works better for light coloured hair such as blonde and gray, but if you have highlights in your hair that will also take the pastel hues.

Lime Crime Unicorn Hair
This brand was known for dominating the makeup game and it has recently transitioned into the hair game. Lime Crime has semi-permanent, easy to apply colours that are perfect for the brand fanatics. It claims to fade gracefully and it’s also vegan, so if you’re looking for something durable, this is your pick. Pro tip: To keep the colour vibrant for longer, wash your hair with a baby shampoo and rinse with cold water.

Splat Hair Chalk
If you want to play without compromising your original hair colour, hair chalk is for you. All you need to is rub the chalk against your hair and you’ll be left with playful colour that will wash out immediately.

Beauty Jobs – Beauty Hacks You Need to Try

Thursday, October 12th, 2017

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs in Canada

During the colder months, we often get lazy when it comes to getting ready to go out. But this is actually the best time to test out some beauty hacks at home for your makeup, hair, nails and skin. If you have yet to jump on the beauty hack train, we’ve rounded up our favourite hacks that you need to try this fall and winter.

Have you attempted contouring yet? If not, no problem. A great trick is to use is, believe it or not, a chopstick! Just place the chopstick in the center of your nose line as a guide and apply the contour cream or bronzer from the nose bone to the tip, after you finish, remove the chopstick and start to blend. This hack will give you a great guideline for starters.

Black Heads
If you are wondering if those black masks that went viral on social media actually work, we have a treatment you can actually DIY pretty quick. All you need is a little bit of non-toxic glue and an activated charcoal capsule (available at any natural food store). Then simply mix one capsule with one tablespoon of nontoxic glue and it’s ready for application. Finally, add one to two drops of your favourite hydrating face oil to the mix to treat your face at the same time. Apply the mix in the desired areas and wait 20 to 30 minutes and peel it off. You’ll be left with skin that’s silky smooth and blackhead-free.

Dry Hair Ends
This hack claims to restore your split ends and also help treat those with chemically damaged hair. In a bowl mix 1 ½ tablespoon of honey and olive oil and apply the mixture to the ends of your hair. It will get a bit greasy, but let it stay overnight. Wash it off in the morning; you’ll notice almost immediately that your ends are less dry. Repeat the process every 15 days; you’ll notice a great improvement, especially if you are not ready to get your dead ends trimmed.

Soft Lips
Want to do your own lip scrub to keep your lips smooth for your fave liquid lipsticks? This one is easy and takes just five minutes. Mix together 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of coconut oil and 1 teaspoon honey in a bowl and transfer it to a small container with a lid and voila! Your scrub is ready to use. Keep the mix sealed away from the heat and the mix will last for at least two months.

Have you tried any cool beauty hacks lately? Let us know in the comment section below!

Makeup Artist Jobs – 5 Dupes for High-End Makeup

Tuesday, August 15th, 2017

With so many options of makeup available and new brands popping up every other day, it’s hard to focus on what you should spend your precious money on. If one thing is true, we want the best of the best, at budget friendly prices.  So how exactly do you do that? Try some dupes of high-end makeup! We’ve been testing out a bunch of great products, and we found that drugstore brands work just the same (if not better) as high-end products at a fraction of the price. Read on to see what our favourite dupe products are below!

Sure, you can leave home with just your SPF on, but you need to make sure that your brows look sharp. The best way to rock the au naturale look is by using a brow gel that holds everything in place. A great high-end option is Benefit’s Gimme Brow Volumizing Fiber Gel. It gives your brows volume and mimics your hair colour – making your brows look fuller. On the drugstore side, we have Make Me Brow Eyebrow Gel Mascara from Essence. This dupe works exactly the same as Benefit, but at a fraction of the price.

The best way to prep your skin for a day of makeup is by applying a good primer to minimize pores and even out your complexion. The most loved one in this department for sure is the Smashbox Photo finish Primer, an oil free formula from heaven. Luckily, we found a great dupe for this baby that works just as well – the NYX Shine Killer. NYX is easy to apply, feels great on the skin and will keep your makeup in place well into the night.

Foundation transforms your skin, which is why you need to find the perfect match. A high-end foundation that is loved by celebs and makeup artists is the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation. It’s lightweight, goes on smooth and provides amazing coverage, leaving you with perfect skin. On the other hand, we have a fantastic dupe that works just as well and has an even better price: the L’Oreal True Match Lumi. While the colour range is not big as Giorgio Armani, the results are absolutely flawless.

In this department, there are so many affordable options available that it was actually hard to narrow it down to our top fave! If you’re looking for a higher price point, we recommend Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer. It not only smells amazing but gives you a much-needed sun kissed glow. If you’re on a budget and want to keep your bronzed glow until fall, head to your closest drugstore and pick up the Rimmel London Natural Bronzer. You’re going to have the same results but for way less. Seriously, this dupe is amazing.

This last dupe has the beauty world freaking out, not just because of the amazing quality but the packaging similarity. Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara loved by all, but the price point is a bit steep. This is why we love L’Oreal’s Lash Paradise Mascara. This product sets the bar high when it comes to drugstore mascara; the application gives volume and length delivering everything that the higher priced does for half of the price.

Which other makeup dupes have you tried? Let us know on the comment section below!

Career Chat – Q&A with Madelyn Chung, Beauty Writer Extraordinaire

Friday, July 21st, 2017

Madelyn Chung is a freelance editor with a ton of great gigs under her belt. As the former Style editor at HuffPost Canada, and a writer for, sweet, Yahoo! Beauty and 29secrets, Madelyn is no stranger to the beauty world. We had the opportunity to chat with Madelyn and learn about how she transitioned from her university life and into the real world of beauty journalism, how she makes her content relevant, and her favourite beauty looks for summer.

BNTF: As a grad of Ryerson’s School of Journalism how important (or unimportant) is post-secondary education for a career in beauty journalism?

MC: It definitely played an important role, at least in my personal experience. Not only did I learn a ton (about journalism, not necessarily beauty) from J-School, but my school internship is pretty much what got me started on my career path.

Having said that, what’s most important in terms of landing a job as a fashion or beauty writer is experience. I know plenty of people who didn’t go to school for journalism, but have had successful careers as fashion and beauty editors or writers, simply by gaining experience through internships or writing jobs, whether they are paid or unpaid.

BNTF: Many people find the transition between college and “real life” a bit challenging. Can you tell us about your journey between the two? What was your first job post-university?

MC: I was fortunate enough to land a job immediately after school. My fourth year internship was at Chatelaine magazine, where I worked extremely hard as a web intern. Not only did I assist the editors, but I also made sure to write as much as possible, so I could have clippings for my own portfolio. My supervisors recognized my hard work, and offered me a job within the company (Rogers Digital Media) as the editor of syndicated content. From there, I made more connections with other media organizations, which ultimately led me to my job as lifestyle editor at and then style editor at HuffPost Canada.

BNTF: What’s one thing you wish you could go back and tell yourself when you were first starting your career?

MC: Stay true to yourself and be as transparent as possible. When you’re first starting out, it’s so easy to get sucked into the allure of receiving free products, etc. and a lot of times, people sell out. And with so many influencers and sponsored and advertorial content, it can be hard to decipher whether people truly stand behind the products they are repping, or if they’re just doing it for compensation. Nowadays, I make it a point to only write about products I truly love, rather than trying to make other people happy by offering coverage.

BNTF: Where do you find sources of inspiration to amp up your creativity?

MC: Reading websites I love, browsing through magazines, Instagram and looking at old beauty spreads. If I’m out of story ideas, I ask my friends what they’d like to read about, or what type of content/reviews/tips and tricks they’re looking for.

BNTF: Our blog covers a ton of beauty articles from Q&As, product features, howtos to must-haves. Which story in your beauty portfolio are you most proud of?

MC: The piece I’m most proud of isn’t a review, product feature or how-to… it’s a blog I wrote about cutting my hair. My hair was my security blanket, and cutting it off was a big deal. It really pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to put myself out there, rather than hide behind my strands. It just goes to show how something as simple as a hair change or a new lipstick can really boost your confidence, and I think that was one of those moments where that realization really clicked. That’s the kind of content I like to read, personally. Something that is raw and real and makes you feel something, rather than just someone telling me a certain product is going to make my life better.

BNTF: What are two pros and two cons of being a freelance writer?

MC: Pros – Freedom to create my own schedule and being able to contribute to numerous publications at once.

Cons – The hustle to keep steady work and not getting paid on time (this is very common, unfortunately).

BNTF: Writing about beauty products can get a little redundant, what are your top tips for upcoming writers to keep content fresh and exciting?

MC: Always personalize the story! I think traditionally in journalism, you’re taught to never include yourself or write in the first person, but I find the most useful/enjoyable beauty content is written from this angle. When I write about a product, I write in a conversational tone — a good trick is to think about how you would tell your friends about said product.

BNTF: What’s your favourite outlet for all things beauty related?

MC: Into the Gloss. It’s one of the few publications whose reviews I actually trust, and I love reading about which products my fave celebrities and editors are using.

BNTF: Your go-to makeup routine this summer?

MC: Funnily enough, I outlined it here but in a nutshell, I’m all about as little makeup as possible in the summer. I really just focus on glowy, bronzed skin, lots of mascara, messy undone hair and a neutral, glossy lip.

BNTF: And finally, what do you look forward to next in your career?

MC: Seeing what happens next!

Beauty Jobs – How to Start Your Own Successful Beauty Blog

Thursday, July 13th, 2017

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs in Canada

BNTF is a platform that encourages men and women from all walks of life to turn their passion for the beauty industry into a career. You’ve undoubtedly considered starting your very own blog, so what’s stopping you? A blog is a great way to make a name for yourself, sharpen or develop tons of new skills and even make extra cash! If you’re thinking about launching your own beauty blog and you’re not sure where to begin, read on below to get tips on starting your own successful blog ASAP.

1. Google the Title of This Article

Seriously. Google is a guy/gal’s best friend when it comes to learning just about, well, anything! Scan through the articles you come across until you have a general idea of what creating a blog actually entails. Also, try a variety of search queries like “how my beauty blog changed my life” or “why I stopped beauty blogging”. You’ll get a better view of what you’re really getting yourself into.

2. What Do You Have to Share?

In order to stand out from the sea of beauty blogs out there, find your voice and audience and what sets you apart from everyone else. The beauty scene can feel a little over-saturated at times but everyone brings something unique to the table! What is it about face mask addiction, hair dyeing obsession, product launch reviews, dupes, cost comparisons, etc., that you need to share? Your niche is what people will eventually come to your site for so try to pin it down.

3. Set Yourself Up

You’ve done a little market research, you know what you want to say, now’s the time to get online. Owning your site will make it easier to monetize in the future (and rake in extra revenue). Although it may seem complicated, it’s pretty straightforward to get a host provider, think of a catchy domain name, install WordPress and choose a theme in less time than you’d think. Suzi at Cruelty-Free Kitty has the most thorough, helpful and aesthetic setup guide, here.

4. Content

Focus on consistent quality over consistent quantity. Balance eye-catching images with thoughtful and useful text. Whether you plan on showcasing makeup looks, swatches, nail designs, etc., get the best quality pictures that are available to you. That may mean your iPhone camera in natural light or a high-performance DSLR with studio lighting. Everyone starts somewhere!

5. Measuring Success

Let’s talk data. You can post the most amazing content the internet has ever seen but if no one sees it, what’s the point? Measure the success of your posts by using analytic tools that come free with your website host provider. Frequently reviewing your blog’s traffic and performance allows you to monitor and track your average site views, clicks and engagement rates. The insights you can pull from this data are limitless — it’s up to you to use them!

6. You Saw This One Coming

Network. As a new blogger on the scene, it’s important to connect with and show support for other bloggers around you. Genuine engagement is appreciated and doesn’t go unnoticed! Make it a point to attend a few blogger meet ups and product launch events in order to get your name out there. For more tips on networking, read up on How to Network in the Beauty Industry.

7. Don’t Stop

Beauty blogging is far from glam. It takes up a lot of creative juice, energy and antisocial time in work mode to get your baby beauty blog off the ground. The key here is to not give up. With these tips in your arsenal, you’re bound to be running your very own successful beauty blog in no time.

We never said starting your own successful beauty blog was going to easy, but it will be worth it! Are there any tips and tricks that we missed? Leave your beauty blog name below and share your know-how in the comments!

Beauty Jobs – The Top Sunless Tan Options for Summer

Monday, June 26th, 2017

Whether it feels like it or not (looking at you, unpredictable Canadian weather) summer 2017 has officially touched down. BNTF is very well acquainted with the dangers of harmful UVA/UVB rays and advocates the practice of safe sun by using SPF daily. We have compiled a list of the best self-tanners ranging from luxury brands, drugstore steals, eco-friendly options, etc. to get you bronzed up literally overnight. Get your glow on without damaging your skin in the long run by reading on below!

Worth the Splurge

Start your summer off glowing the right way. Dior’s foolproof self-tanner is raved about online for good reason! The gel-based formula makes it easy to blend evenly over the entire body — it also intensifies gradually throughout the day. To keep up your skin’s newfound bronze radiance, apply two to three times throughout the week.

#1 Drugstore Self-Tanner

Beauty aficionado Paula Begoun is known for her science-backed skincare line Paula’s Choice. What isn’t as well-known is her amazingly affordable Sun 365 Self-Tanning Foam. For only $16 a pop, you can get your hands on this lightweight, odourless, self-tanner for use on the face and body.

Eco-Friendly? Yes, please!

Eco-babes rejoice! We found the perfect vegan, cruelty-free and certified organic self-tanner for you to try this summer. The Invisible Tan by Australian company ECO-Tan has received countless beauty awards throughout the years and is the go-to product for many conscious women and men around the world. The brand also carries before and after care products to extend your glow as long as possible.

Handy Dandy Towelettes

Don’t have patience for all the liquid foams, gels, sprays and mists on the market? These large (9 square inches!) towelettes are the perfect option for full body self-tan applications. Simply run the towelettes over clean dry, skin and allow the quick-drying formula to develop over the next eight hours. What truly makes TanTowel a winner is the fact that they’re travel-friendly!

No Time, No Problem

BNTF has discovered the best 15-minute “self-tanning” beauty hack for Summer 2017. Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs is essentially liquid pantyhose, it matches your skin tone and smoothes over your body’s complexion, covers veins, blemishes etc. all while being non-transferable and water resistant. By going a shade or two deeper than your actual skin tone you create an instant glow that will last all day long.

Tried and True

Let’s be real, is a self-tanner review legit if it doesn’t mention the iconic St. Tropez Self Tan? If you’re new to the world of self-tanning and are willing to spend a little more than you would at the drugstore look no further. A quick Google search will show you the thousands upon thousands of reviews on the St. Tropez line that promises non-orange, long lasting, summer ready bronze skin from head to toe.

Super Moisturized Glow

Jergens Natural Glow is a drugstore self-tanning line that’s been around for ages. They stepped up their game this summer with the release of their Wet Skin Self Tanning Moisturizer. As soon as you step out of the shower apply this gradual tanner all over body for a glow that lasts up to three days. Smooth, tan and touchable skin in just a few steps!

BONUS: Don’t get too messy

FYI sunless tanners can get pretty messy and stain your palms, knuckles and even under your fingernails. Keep it tidy by using this huge version of the Beauty Blender called the body.sponge. It has the same much-loved texture of the Beauty Blender but is large enough to efficiently cover large areas of your body.

Hair Stylist Jobs – From the Beach to the Boardroom: Summer Hair Trends You Can Wear to Work

Wednesday, June 21st, 2017

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs in Canada

For most of our fellow Beauty Nine to Fivers, summer is just another three-month time span on the calendar and not an actual vacay from the 9-5 grind. All the fun, beachy, effortless and (somewhat unkempt) hairstyles might just not cut it in a professional workplace. To balance the best of both worlds, we have compiled a list of eight hair trends that you can dare to wear to work. In order from least to most daring, read on for summer hair inspo, styling tips, and tricks!

Far From Basic Top Knot

When we think of summer hairstyles, two words immediately come to mind: Beach. Waves. You know the look that’s easily achievable with any salt-based texturizing spray? To take this look from the beach to your workplace, pull it together (literally!) by taking a section of hair from your crown and tying a sleek, mini top knot. Secure with bobby pins and you’re set.

Long Live The Lob

The lob (a long bob) is a breezy option for those not willing to commit to super short hair. Piecey, lengthy layers frame the face while the still being long enough for a ponytail. For extra sun-kissed vibes, selectively highlight sections of hair that fall around your eyes, temples, and mouth. This creates the effect that light is naturally being drawn to you.

Bang Bang Bang

Thinking of a super high, sleek ponytail in this humidity? Forget about it. Curly cuties, we have the perfect celeb style for you. Gather your hair at the very top of your head, pushing some of your hair forward. Gently pull a few wispy pieces from the back of your ponytail towards the front of your face, creating the illusion of bangs — the hair flowing over from your ponytail will hide everything. Once you’re done, you’re left with the perfect mix of carefree sophistication.

Tropical Tresses

Box braids 101: they’re a traditional hairstyle often used protectively for many women around the world. Attaching seashells or silver and gold beads and clamps throughout the length of your braids gives a distinctly tropical flair. We love the gold clamps pictures above to add a touch of island heat to any work setting.

Fresh Out The Pool Style

Ladies with straight hair: you know the way your hair looks when you climb out of the pool and it falls behind your ears? That’s what we’re going for! Blow dry damp hair with a firm boar bristle brush, directing strands towards the nape of your neck. Smooth over sections with a flat iron then backcomb the front to add volume. Pin sides of your hair discreetly behind your ears. Finally, spritz your entire head with a high-shine hairspray to complete the look.

Ariel, who?!

Aside from awesome pastel dye jobs, mermaid hair is also known for its extremely long flowing qualities. This summer hair trend is easy to try for a day or two — all you need are 40-inch hair extensions. If you can’t handle hair down to your ankles, opt for extensions that are noticeably longer than what you’re used to, around the 22-24 inch mark. This simple hack makes a stunning, glamorous difference without a permanent commitment!

Platinum Blonde Beauty

Hey, there risk taker! The striking trend of celebrities buzzing their hair and dying it platinum has been making serious waves. From Amber Rose who has donned the style for years, to the likes of Cara Delevingne, Katy Perry, Kristen Stewart and even Zoe Kravitz, a buzz cut makes a powerful statement while the bright platinum tone keeps it light and summery. If you’ve been thinking about going really short, this is the look to try (plus, it’ll grow out in a few weeks).

Millennial Pink Everything

Step up your casual Fridays at work with a millennial pink wig. We’re serious. Erase images of plastic, shiny costume wigs from your memory. 2017 wigs can be washed, bleached, curled, straightened, dyed, time and time again just like typical hair extensions. There are thousands of YouTube tutorials demonstrating where to purchase and how to wear wigs to make them look hyperreal.

This is our complete list of beach to boardroom hairstyles you can dare to try on your own this summer. Which style would you actually from this list? Which one are you skipping? Let us know in the comments below!

Make room on your vanity for Naked Heat — the latest addition that mixes matte and shimmer shades for endless steamy possibilities. Bonus: the collection includes two eyeliners and lipsticks that complement the palette for a completely hot look.

Ultimate Beauty Shield

Wherever beauty is involved, we’re in there like skincare! ELF takes affordable sun protection to the next realm by releasing seven items in their brand new Beauty Shield collection. Get your hands on a Vitamin C serum, moisturizer with SPF 50 and a facial brush (among four other items) for under $25 each. Trust us, you’re not dreaming!

Glimmer, Shimmer, Shine
Summertime fine looks tend to move away from matte finishes and embrace the glimmer, shimmer and shine of hotter temps. Cali-based brand Jouer Cosmetics launched their playful, limited edition Skinny Dip collection that includes a palette of six stunning ultra foil shadows that can be used wet,  as highlighters and glosses and even a fruity lipstick shade. Deets on where to check out the brand are below!

More than Just a Spin Brush

The latest release from Clarisonic has beauty gurus all over the Internet testing out its seamless blending claims. The Sonic Foundation Brush Head works with all Clarisonic devices and promises to deliver flawless, airbrushed results with any cream-based product. Test it out with foundations, concealers, contours and cream blushes or highlighters.

Matcha for the Face

In case you’ve ever wanted your daily toner in stick form, Milk Makeup has got you covered. The new matcha Toner, formulated with interesting ingredients like real matcha green tea, organic cactus elixir and kombucha, immediately cools and refreshes skin after cleansing. This innovative little product is perfect for summer travels as it was designed to pass all TSA carry-on requirements!

The Most Poppin’ Highlighter of the Summer

MUA Huda Kattan was able to build a flourishing makeup empire based off her online presence. The much anticipated release of her latest 3D highlighter palettes in Pink Sands for fair to medium skin tones or Golden Sands to medium to deep tones are just in time for summer. The swatches above should help determine which one is right for you.

Green Clean Queen

If you’re a green beauty lover, you know how hard it can be find a deodorant with natural, plant-based ingredients that actually works. Enter Tarte’s Clean Queen Vegan Deodorant just in time for the inevitable sticky, humid weather that’s on the horizon. Based off of plant-starches, aloe and topped with a delicious vanilla scent, you can count on this deodorant all summer long. Apply again mid-day to ensure your pits stay fresh!

Zap Away the Blues

Phototherapy for acne breakouts is nothing new — it’s just the use of an LED light to penetrate layers of skin and literally zap acne-causing bacteria at the source. What is new, however, is Foreo’s Espada Acne-Clearing Blue Light Pen that specifically targets your breakout at a fraction of the price of a doctor’s visit. If you find you break out more often in the summer or have been looking for a quick solution this may be worth a look.

Flower Power Sheet Masks

Burning heat, sweat and humidity can wreak havoc on just about anyone’s complexion. Take 15 min per week to recover with bamboo sheet masks that soothe, hydrate, soften, boost radiance, refresh or nourish. Origin’s Flower Fusion Sheet Masks are infused with essential plant oils that promise to keep you fresh faced all summer long.

J’adore Essie

Inspired by French bakeries, Essie’s Summer 2017 collection is the versatile shade range you need. From pastels to metallics to bright pops of red, you have a full range of flattering shades to match your summer 17’ mood. For ideas on how to actually wear each colour, check out Essie’s IG page for tons of nail art inspo.

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs in Canada

Beauty Nine To Five was lucky enough to chat with Canada’s very own on-air Beauty Expert Bahar Niramwalla! If you haven’t already seen her gracing your television screen hosting beauty segments for The Morning Show and CityLine, you’ve most definitely read her articles for Chrome Magazine. With 10 years of experience in the beauty industry, Bahar has earned a reputation as the go-to beauty know-it-all!

Take a peek at our interview which dishes on her career moves, tips for beauty industry hopefuls and even shares some of her fave Canadian brands!

BNTF: Your passion for all things beauty speaks for itself — what initially sparked your interest in makeup, skincare, and fragrance?

BN: The usual, watching my mom in the mirror, admiring how she paid attention to little details of the process for getting ready… even her regimen and steps in the whole “beautification” process.

BNTF: As the appointed Grooming Editor of Chrome Magazine, a luxury men’s publication, do you find that men and women have drastically different beauty needs?

BN: Not to speak down to the male sex, but, it’s a lot easier to speak to the majority of ladies looking for beauty solutions about detailed ingredient discussions, multi-step programs and minute details. Whereas the majority of men want an easy, quick, no fuss solution to all their problems — I am convinced 2in1 shampoo was a male invention for men.

Most of this does indeed speak to the fact that their “needs” are different. Women tend to find very small, specific issues and have many of them to deal with whereas men look at the grooming and beauty aspect as an overall picture and therefore see the solution as being the same overall thing to cure all their needs. The one universal need, however, is skincare, and it’s great to see both brands and their consumers responding positively to this necessary item.

BNTF: What are three ways someone obsessed with beauty can establish themselves as an authority in this field in the ways that you have?

BN: The three easiest avenues to stand out in this industry are rather simple: Be real, be honest and be yourself. There is nothing more refreshing (or marketable) than being real nowadays. That is why reality media has exploded. People want real life to unfold before them and, in this industry which can be full of “fake”, it’s always nice to see/hear someone who is being real.

Honesty seems obvious, but it’s often overlooked in communication within the industry, perhaps because the truth is often harder to swallow. And, it almost goes without saying: be yourself. You are the only YOU out there – no one can be you so it pays off tenfold to represent yourself in all your glory vs. trying to mimic a celebrity or a reality TV star. I think this also goes for your look and style, too. It’s great to have some inspiration from social media/online/TV, but be sure you’re repping’ you, at the end of the day.

BNTF: From The Morning Show to CityLine, you’re practically on-air 24/7! How can we create a camera-ready look that lasts?

BN: Skincare first, as it is the foundation (not the colour coverage kind) that sets the stage for a great on-air look. I adore the Omorovicza line of skincare products for both their sensorial aspect but also how they leave my face a perfect canvas for makeup. Next, figure out where you need foundation and concealer and apply accordingly instead of everywhere.

Strategic makeup is always better than a lot of makeup. Try using a matte bronzer as a contour instead of heavy, cakey colours and always fill in your brows. Make sure you slightly overdo your blush colour, as studio lighting can wash you out. Lastly, use a facial mist or makeup setting spray to keep everything in place!

BNTF: Brands have become increasingly creative and stepped up their product launch game in recent years. What’s the most memorable PR package you’ve ever received?

BN: The most recent was a personalized package filled with items selected based on a questionnaire. It was colour coded, had my name on items, came with some great scents and then also tied in SO well into the actual product offerings, I was left slack-jawed. Personal is always best in my books.

BNTF: Lastly, as we’re sure you know, Canadian brands are making huge waves in the beauty industry right now. Which ones have caught your eye and why?

BN: I have SO many!

  • Consonant Skincare – Hands down, the Hydrextreme is a game changer (and an award winner!)
  • Cake beauty – They are truly kicking a** in the hair styling game right now.
  • Vasanti Cosmetics – Their powder highlighters and gel formula lip colours are to die for!
  • Stellar Beauty – loving this more-inclusive shade range offering for your diverse nation!
  • Bite Beauty – If you don’t know, you need a bite lipstick/pencil/gloss/lip mask in your life.
  • Nudestix – Overall, so simple and easy to use, these (very young) entrepreneurs have created a great collection of eye, lip and cheek sticks that I can’t travel without.
