Beauty Jobs – 5 Cruelty Free Brands to Know Now

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs in Canada

In today’s cosmetics landscape, brands don’t have to strive to work the best, but they also have to be the best for the environment and the consumers that use them. Which is why we’re so happy to see that more and more brands are banning animal testing before putting their products into the market, which is why we wanted to share five cool traditional brands that are shaking up the cruelty-free beauty industry.

Cruelty-free means: A product and its ingredients weren’t tested on animals. PETA has a list of companies and brands that pledge to never to sell in China since the requirement to sell cosmetics in this country requires that they are tested on animals in order to have their products available in the Chinese market. You can check the list here.

If you want to know if your favourite brand is cruelty-free, keep reading…

E.L.F Cosmetics
We got super excited when we found out that one of our favourite drugstore brands is cruelty-free. E.L.F has great and affordable makeup brushes, blushes and eye shadows, the best part, great quality for a small price. We love the baked Highlighter, as it’s the perfect way to get a serious glow during winter.

Josie Maran
Created by a supermodel that was looking to create a cosmetic line that actually does some good, Josie Maran is a pioneer when comes to Argan Oil. She is not only the queen of incorporating Argan Oil into all of her products but her brand 100% against animal testing. Josie’s must try: Whipped Mud Mask – it’s a scent-free product that work for every skin type.

Charlotte Tilbury
In the high-end department, we have the amazing celebrity makeup artist that wanted your go-to brand to be both luxurious and good for the environment at the same time. Not to mention Charlotte is against using animals as test components.  Tilbury’s Magic Cream is the celebrity secret, but we believe that the Matte Revolution lipstick will steal your heart; it has a smooth application and is long-lasting.

Cake Beauty
This Toronto-based brand does a great job at being 100% cruelty-free and develops the most delicious scented creams. They are manufactured in Canada and UK and they have cute packaging. The everything balm will be your best friend during winter, is a life savour for your lips, skin, elbows and even lashes!

Yes To Tomatoes
This brand has a great mission of creating great products without compromising on ingredients. Not to mention the packaging is made of recycled material and like all the products on our list, this brand does not test on animals. It’s a natural line made with ingredients that we can actually pronounce (score!) and can be found in your kitchen. The detoxifying charcoal mud mask should be on your list of must-have items.

Beauty Jobs – Summertime Sadness

Monday, August 31st, 2015

There were gorgeous temperatures last week here in Toronto—low 20’s, mostly cloudy, with a light breeze.  I was so excited in preparing for fall that I didn’t even realize the heat wave that enveloped most of the summer was back upon us. However, I realize that most of you are still trying to get the most out of summer before the cooler temps set in.  For today’s post, I thought I’d share some of my top ways to seamlessly transition from summer to fall.

While I generally hate summer, I do love the dewy, pinky hues that compliment the warm weather.  And while bold berry lips and matte foundations seem to be fall staples, they can be a bit harder to pull off.  The problem with trying to transition between seasons is that there is a pretty big juxtaposition between the two trends: luminous to matte, glossy to satin, and natural to berry.

In the early parts of September, opt for satin finishes when it comes to foundation or concealers.  They have a very natural skin-like appearance without looking too caked-on.  Satin finishes are easily the most versatile as well.  You can mix in liquid highlighters or primers, something like the Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow Primer or L’oreal Magic Lumi Light Infusing primer.Or, for when the cooler temps set in, you can add a bit of matteness with a translucent setting powder—something like the Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless pressed powder works well.

In terms of lip colours, darker lips can be scary, but easily wearable.  Opt for more sheer or glossy formulas for darker colours.  This will give you the appearance of a more seasonal appropriate look without the intensity of a matte finish.  The Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Berry is an essential for fall, but the Narslipgloss in Sixties Fan is another great option.

Lastly, a good way to transition your eye makeup to the next season is to deepen up the light browns and pinks you used throughout summer.  Colours like Mac Cranberry and Embark are great plumy reddish toned shades.  These will pair perfectly with a nude or pink summertime lip, as the cooler and pink undertones of the shadows will compliment the lip perfectly.

Beauty Jobs – Transition: Day to Night Makeup Ideas

Tuesday, August 18th, 2015

It always seems like a great idea at the time: having a nice dinner out with friends on a weekday, or grabbing those concert tickets you’ve been dreaming of for a Friday night.  But after the initial delight subsides, a lot of us are left with the question: what should I wear?  This question doesn’t only pertain to our clothes, but will more than likely include our makeup as well.  The kind of makeup you would wear to a concert (think dark smoky eye or vampy lip) isn’t necessarily office appropriate.  So I thought I’d share some of my favourite tips and tricks on how to seamlessly transition from day to night, for almost any occasion.

2There are a few ways to do this, depending on your skill set and the time you have available.  But there are also a few basics you should keep in mind.  In the morning, opt for a matte, or semi-matte foundation.  Something like the Makeup Forever Mat Velvet + Mattifying Foundation is a great option.  These often last the longest, and will require the fewest touch-ups during the day.  Second, bring some powder, like the BeccaBlotting Powder Prefector, or blotting papers with you, especially if you have oily skin, or will be in a warmer climate.  My third tip is to plan ahead: know what you will be wearing, and how you want your makeup to look the night before.  This way, you can keep the beauty items you will need in your purse ahead of time, ensuring you don’t forget them in your morning rush!

3 4

First, there is the “easy-way-out” option.  In the morning, do a slightly more amped up natural make up look.  This includes a neutral brown eyeshadow look, a very natural blusher, and a nudey-pink lip.  Becca’s Ombre Nudes Eye Palette is great for achieving a natural matte look.  Make sure you bring a bold lip colour with you, though.  Whether you prefer a classic red, bright fuchsia, or vampy berry is up to you.  Something like the Urban Decay Matte Revolution Lipsticks are a great option, especially if your evening out involves food! The addition of the pop of colour will really change your look, and will take less than a minute to accomplish.

5 6

Second is the “amped-up” option.  Use something like the cult-classic Urban Decay Naked Palette in the morning, and bring it with you.  Keep to the left side of the palette in the morning, using “naked” through the crease, with a bit of “sidecar” on the lid.  In the evening, you can easily layer the colours to intensify the look.  Add “buck” to the crease, sweep “smog” across the lid, and deepen up the outer corner with a bit of “darkhorse”.  You can even bring a kohl eyeliner with you, something like the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil to smoke out the lash line.  Apply touch-up’s where needed, but leave the rest of the makeup subtle.

7 89

Lastly is the “total transformation” look.  This involves essentially re-doing your entire makeup.  Hey, it’s not the easiest option, but some of us are up for the challenge.Bring something like the Anastasia Contour Palette, or the Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze and Glow with you.  Contouring and highlighting can be a bit much for the office, but they are necessary when it comes to long nights out and flash photography.  Apply contour in the hollows of your cheeks, and any where else you want to “slim” your face, and highlight to the areas where you want to “bring forward”, such as the cupids bow or tops of cheekbones.  Like the previous option, deepen up your eye makeup, and also add a black water-proof pencil onto the waterlineto create a very sultry effect.  Adding a winged out liquid liner also helps enhance the look—the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper is another beauty favourite!  And lastly, bring a nude lipstick to offset the eye makeup.

Whether you want to follow these options, or mix and match is entirely up to you.  Changing your look doesn’t have to be complicated, and depending on the event you are going to will depend on how you will transition.

Beauty Jobs – Blackhead Bothers

Thursday, August 6th, 2015

Blackheads are something that most of us deal with.  Pesky little bumps that are generally smaller than a pimple, but are often clustered together, and have a darker coloured head.  While they can be anywhere on the body, they are found most often on the nose and the chin area.

The best way to get rid of those pesky blackheads is to see a professional.  But not all of us can afford to go to get facials every week or so.  If you fall into this boat, don’t worry, because there are still a few ways to rid them yourself.  Using a comedone extractor tool is the most effective way to remove blackheads.  In order to use an extractor tool, you should start by opening your pores.  Try holding your head over hot water and letting the steam hit your face, or holding a hot face towel over the problem area for a few minutes.  Once the area has softened, use the tool according to the instructions on the packaging and remove those pesky zits!

Extractors can be intimidating.  If done incorrectly, they can be painful and can even result in scaring.  But there are a lot of other products on the market that can help reduce the visibility of blackheads.  Facemasks, especially clay masks, are great at clearing out pores.  Something like the Charlotte Tilbury Goddess Skin Clay Mask is very effective.  Most popular is probably the GlamGlowSuperMud clearing treatment, which draws out dirt and oil from pores to decongest your pores.

Similar to masks are the strip options. Biore is known for their deep cleansing pore strips.  These are predominately designed to be used on the nose.  Like many of the other options, they work by getting rid of dead skin, while also removing dirt and oil that can lead to blackheads.  They also reduce pore size over time.

Lastly, exfoliators are also great options for removing blackheads that can be used more frequently.  Something like the RenMicro Polish Cleanser is great at removing the dead skin that is clogging up pores.Scrubs will remove impurities to help even out skins texture.  With repeated use (about 3 times a week), exfoliators can even help prevent blackheads from returning.
