Beauty Jobs – 6 Ways to add Orange to your Beauty Routine

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs in Canada

Inspiration Image

Backstage beauty shots from the runway predicted this trend months ago: orange is the new black. Shades of orange, peach and mandarin are taking over department store counters, social media feeds and our favourite beauty gurus’ videos. This spring, we’re giving you six ways to add this vibrant, juicy colour to your everyday look.

1. Lipgloss

For the Lips

Just like red lipstick, the perfect orange shade depends on getting the right undertone for your complexion. Skip the guesswork and go for a universally flattering gloss. Makeup Forever’s Extreme Shine Lip Gloss gives a bold veil of colour that is perfect on its own or on top of a nude, long-wearing matte lipstick.

2. Eyeshadow

For the Eyes

Nothing looks better than a sunny pop of colour on the lid. The newly released Bronze Palette from Kylie Cosmetics does just that while providing an impressive range of crease, outer V and highlight shades. FYI: there are thousands (literally!) of tutorials on YouTube featuring this palette in case you need inspiration.

3. Blush

For the Cheeks

We’re not letting you get away with a coral blush this time — go full orange for maximum impact. Make orange cheeks wearable by dusting a sheer tone over apples of the face with a huge powder brush. Pro tip: lightly dust blush over the tip of nose to pull the look together with the rest of the face.

4. Hair

For the Hair

Sorry brunettes, this hair trend only really works on blondies. A quick way to change your hair colour for the weekend, without any major commitment, is by applying semi-permanent hair dye. Manic Panic’s Psychedelic Sunset will bring your tresses to neon, highlighter orange heights you never knew were possible!

5. Nails

For the Nails

Bright nails typically make their way around the beauty cycle by this time of year. Steer away from the typical high gloss finish by applying OPI’s matte topcoat over a deep orange nail lacquer. The matte topcoat gives the nails a unique effect and warms up a complexion that hasn’t seen enough sun yet.

6. Tools

The Tools

This beauty blender contender was designed by YouTube royalty Pixiwoo and is loved by so many of us! The Miracle Complexion sponge gives flawless results at a fraction of the price of similar luxury tools. It made our list due to its large size, availability and most importantly, fun orange colour.

What are you favourite orange beauty products this spring? Let us know in the comments below!

Beauty Jobs – Q&A with Denise Elliott, CEO of Denise Elliott Beauty Co.

Beauty Nine to Five - Beauty Jobs in Canada

Inspiration image (1)

Balancing what you love with the demands of owning a successful business takes hustle, motivation and most importantly, talent. Meet Denise Elliott, CEO of Denise Elliott Beauty and Co., who runs a full service beauty salon based in Vancouver.

Following the salon’s recent grand opening, Beauty Nine to Five caught up with Denise to discuss the biggest challenges of working in the beauty industry, the importance of social media in running a business and, of course, top beauty tips!

The Studio (credit Ema Peter Photography)

BNTF: Your growth in the beauty industry is inspirational — from working with major brands to starting your own mobile beauty company to now opening Denise Elliott Beauty Co! What are some challenges you’ve had to face to get where you are today?

DE: Thank you – it’s been a long road and it’s taken a lot of dedication to get here! There have been many challenges with running my own business. The main one that sticks out the most is turning off “work mode”. I seem to work all the time and sometimes at all hours. It’s been difficult finding the balance with work, personal and social life.  The consistent emails, team scheduling, and just day-to-day appointments – you can never get caught up! That said it’s all worth it in the end.

BNTF: What can new clients look forward to when they walk through the doors of the brand new Denise Elliott Beauty Co. makeup and hair salon?

DE: We’re a full service beauty salon. Services vary from makeup, hair styling, including colours and cuts, to hosting lessons and parties. Our team loves hosting any type of groups from weddings, grads, bachelorette makeup parties, teen lessons, birthdays and all sorts of other beauty events.

We totally understand that a beauty studio can be a little intimidating for some people and I wanted to make a super welcoming space where our clients can come in and feel comfortable asking questions and learning all about feeling and looking their best!

We also retail a full range of our favourite makeup, skincare and hair products, so we make recommendations and help to educate out clients what works best for them.

BNTF: Do you have any tips for young talent wanting to work in the industry? How can an aspiring MUA or hairstylist land a gig with you?

DE: For new aspiring talent, it’s really important to be professional and eager to learn certain techniques that are in line with the brand. We focus on enhancing our client’s natural beauty and it’s really important to have new talent be able to create the similar style.

BNTF: Your social media platform @deniseelliottbeautyco is super aesthetic. Does social media play a role for your business in the real world?

DE: Yes, social media is a major role in our business. We have clients email or message us through social media wanting to book our services whether it’s for a wedding, makeup or hair service for a special event or photoshoot. It’s nice to have other vendors always tag us because that creates awareness and builds community. Cross promotion is super helpful to anyone involved!Denise Elliott Beauty Co. 6

BNTF: What’s the signature Denise Elliott look and how does one achieve it?

DE: My philosophy is all about bringing out a woman’s natural beauty by enhancing their best features to complement their skin, style and personality. That means we want our customers to leave feeling confident, beautiful and knowledgeable about how to bring out their best features.

BNTF: Name a makeup “rule” you would never break. Name one you break all the time.

DE: The one makeup rule I can never break is putting an eye primer on! I can’t stress enough about having the eyeshadow last all day especially with having oily lids. I love doing eyes and for me using an eye primer is key!

One rule that I break is applying lip liner. If you want a red lip I do think it’s crucial to apply a lip liner, however with a soft lip colour I will sometimes just skip that step… oops!

BNTF: Finally, share a makeup trick more ladies and gents need to know about.

DE: After teaching numerous makeup lessons over the years to my clients I would definitely say my top tip is “less is more”. I can’t stress enough about starting with a light application and then adding more after if needed.

Makeup Artist Jobs – What’s in My Makeup Bag With Beauty PR Guru Victoria Malloy

Thursday, April 13th, 2017

beauty-nine-to-five

Victoria Inspirational Image 1

I am passionate about healthy living and that extends to my beauty regimen. In my line of work (I run a boutique PR firm working exclusively with natural beauty and grooming brands) I have had the great pleasure of working with some amazing natural beauty brands from across the globe. I have acquired a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the chemicals lurking in our beauty products and how our day-to-day beauty products can be easily replaced with clean alternatives. Just like we eat well – feeding our bodies nutrient-dense foods – the same care should be taken when it comes to our skin. There are amazing plant-based products out there to help you “green-ify” your make-up bag.

Here are some of my go-tos…

1. Vita Active Foundation

Fitglow Beauty Vita-Active Foundation

This has become a staple in my makeup arsenal. This is so much more than a foundation. It is skin nutrition that feeds the skin super foods and essential vitamins! This 98% organic foundation combines Vitamin C, Botanical Hyaluronic Acid, Seaweed Brighteners and Beta-Carotene to improve skin clarity, fight free radical damage and improve skin tone and smoothness. I love how well this foundation holds up throughout the day.

I have oily skin that tends to slowly break down my makeup throughout the day, but this one really holds up! Fitglow has designed this foundation to work with the skin’s changing pH so it stays put and looks great all day. I love how this feels on my skin. It doesn’t feel like I have a face full of makeup, nor does it look like I do. It gives me great coverage but feels nice and light. I like to apply it with my fingers with nice clean hands or with a beauty blender. Also works great applied with a foundation brush.

2. Pure Powder Foundation

Hynt Beauty Velluto Pure Powder Foundation

I have used different loose powders over the years, but as of late I’ve been really loving this one from Hynt Beauty.  Sometimes I use this on its own as a foundation or dust a light layer on top of my Fitglow foundation. Either way, this ultra-fine milled loose powder blended with organic extracts and oils creates a velvety smooth finish that I love. I like to tap a small amount of powder into the lid and swirl my brush around to load the brush evenly before applying.

3. Un-Coverup

RMS Beauty “Un” CoverUp Concealer

This is one of the best natural concealers I’ve used. The formulation is beautifully creamy and blends flawlessly.  It warms up with the skin and melts into the skin for a beautiful finish with great coverage. I like to gently pat a little bit under my eyes with my ring finger to brighten up the eyes as well as other areas that need a little bit of extra coverage. A little goes a long way!

4. Good lash

Fitglow Beauty Good Lash Mascara

I have tested out a lot of natural mascaras over the years and it took some time to find one that agreed with my eyes. Not only do I have sensitive eyes that have been known to get easily irritated by certain mascaras, but I also have long lashes that tend to transfer product to my lids and under-eye area. I needed to find one that was gentle but also formulated to stay put. My eyes found their match in Fitglow’s Good Lash Mascara. This is now a staple in my makeup bag.

5. Eyelash Curler

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler

The Shu Uemura eyelash curler is an absolute essential in my makeup routine. It’s amazing what a difference a curl of lashes makes to complete your makeup look. I have used different brands over the years and they all generally achieve the same result for me, but this is the one you’ll find in my makeup bag right now. Again, because of my eye sensitivity, I like to keep it nice and clean by spraying it with a little alcohol and giving it a good wipe.

6. Lip stick

Suntegrity Lip C.P.R Sunscreen Lipstick

I’m a huge fan of products that do double-duty, in particular, lip products. These beautiful lipsticks from Suntegrity not only nourish your lips in rich, creamy colour but they keep the lips protected with broad spectrum SPF 30 without chemicals. I love how this lipstick glides on and keeps my lips feeling hydrated with organic jojoba oil, shea butter and cocoa butter. I have been wearing Solar Rose but I also love Sunburst Pink.

7. Too Faced Kabuki Brush

Too Faced Kabuki Brush

Brushes are another important part of my makeup routine, but I’m mindful of keeping brushes made with animal hair (and any product not committed to being cruelty-free for that matter) out of my makeup bag. This “Teddy Bear Hair” brush from Too Faced is great because it’s a) cruelty-free and b) it’s retractable, so it’s easy to keep it clean especially when on-the-go or traveling. I have also been enjoying the sculpting foundation brush from Juice Beauty, made with 100% taklon non-animal fibre.

Beauty Jobs – How to Network in the Beauty Industry

Monday, March 6th, 2017

Beauty Nine to Five - beauty careersTaja Inspiration Image

Much like its fashion counterpart, breaking into the beauty industry is no walk in the park. To be successful in this field you need passion, drive and most importantly, a strong work ethic.

Aspiring beauty gurus can get their foot in the door and a head start on the competition by building lasting relationships with industry professionals — so start networking ASAP! If you want to be a MUA or hairstylist on the retail level, work as a beauty editor at a leading magazine, or work at the head office in PR, social media or marketing, you need to start meeting people and immersing yourself in the industry however you can. So for those looking to break into the beauty game, we’ve got your back! Here are a few proven tips that will help you stand out.

Taja Text Image

Show Serious Interest

Peers in your field (especially employers) can sniff out authentic passion versus someone who has a mild, passing interest in a heartbeat. Show your genuine interest in the beauty world by engaging with the industry as much as you can. Blog about product launches, retweet your fave beauty influencers, stay savvy on all the latest industry happenings and immerse yourself in the beauty industry by staying up-to-date with events, beauty breakthroughs, and corporate announcements.

Put Yourself Out There

There are tons of industry events that open the door for great networking opportunities. Maximize your time by looking for those special instances when different brands are under the same roof — think Fashion Week or Generation Beauty. Meetups in your area are also a great way to connect with like-minded people. Get your name out there!

Be Yourself Online

Present yourself just as beautifully online as you do in person. Social media platforms are a great way to connect with specific people who may be able to help get you to where you need to go. Make it easy to network over social media by keeping all your profiles public. Believe it or not, but LinkedIn is a huge asset for those looking to break into the industry and can make a huge impact on your job search and overall industry networking potential. Here you can follow the companies you’d like to work with and connect with their employees, network in groups, and job hunt. Facebook, on the other hand, can be used to join beauty-networking groups, while Instagram can be used to follow and engage with your favourite brands, MUA, beauty bloggers, and influencers.

Major Key: The Follow-up

When networking, there are so many names and faces you come across that it gets hard to remember everyone. The follow up is without a doubt the #1 most important step of this process. Make sure your hard work doesn’t go to waste by sending a friendly but brief email after every new encounter. Nurture your professional relationships and watch them grow!

Are there any beauty industry networking tips we missed that have worked for you in the past? Tell us in the comments below!

Makeup Artist Jobs – NYFW Beauty Looks You Need To Try

Monday, February 20th, 2017

Backstage at Creatures of the Wind RTW 2017

It’s a fact, runway beauty trends typically become mainstream in the months following fashion week. Although looks straight off the runway aren’t necessarily the most wearable, they can be modified (aka toned down) to work for anyone and everyone. Stay ahead of the beauty game by keeping an eye on backstage runway looks during New York Fashion Week. We’ve compiled the top beauty trends from the Fall 2017 Ready to Wear season that you need to try ASAP.

1. Michael Costello

70s Power Woman

“Disco divas” strutted down Michael Costello’s and Brandon Maxwell’s Fall Ready to Wear 2017 this season. Fierce was the most commonly used term used backstage as models sported ultra glam makeup ranging from angular contoured cheekbones to strong brows and prominent lips. Combined with a full ‘fro, this look just says, “I’m a powerful business woman from the ‘70s, nice to meet ya”.2. Jeremy Scott

Bold Bottom Lashes

Jeremy Scott went big (per usual) with the use of false lashes in his Fall 2017 RTW look. To achieve a similar feel without going overboard, apply coats of lash-defining mascara to your bottom lashes without any other eye makeup. Rosy cheeks and a lip-plumping gloss complete this animated look.3. Oscar de la Renta

Bright Monochromatic Eyes

Graphic eyeshadow looks came down the runway multiple times this season, but no one mastered it quite like Oscar de la Renta. The smoldering red eyeshadow manages to make the face pop without being “unwearable”. Although more appropriate for a night out, anyone can pull off this look with the right shade of red and a ton of practice!

Beaufille RTW Fall 2017

Mara Hoffman RTW Fall 2017

Skin Is In

Understated makeup that lets the model’s skin poke through was another trend we spotted this week. Whether paired with a with a deep lip as seen in Mara Hoffman’s presentation or something a little more neutral (à la Beaufille) this effortless look is set to take over for the rest of the year.

5. The Blonds

Modern 1920s Beauty

Whether it was the sleek hair or the bronze smokey eye, the models of Badgley Mischka (top) and The Blonds (bottom) were giving us major 1920s vixen feels. The updated pin-up is a glamorous take on classic beauty and would be perfect to replicate for a date night, drinks with the girls or intense IG selfie sessions.

6. Marchesa bow

6. Marchesa flower

Oversized Hair Accessories

We loved the oversized hair accessories we saw strut down Marchesa’s runway this season. The larger-than-life details of the satin bows and stunning floral hair arrangements added a touch of whimsical romance to the collection. Here’s how to tone it down for work: tie a satin ribbon around your ponytail or pin bangs to the side with a floral-print hair clip

.7. Chromat 7. Cushnie et Ochs

Natural Hair Magic

Have you noticed a change in hair trends? Natural hair is being embraced more and more by the high fashion world! This is proven by how many models rocked their natural kinks and curls throughout NYFW. Images from the runways of Cushnie et Ochs and Chromat add diversity and beauty to the looks of this season.

Micro Nail Details

You’ll have to take a close look to appreciate the mini details making their way down runways this season. Alice+Olivia went matchy-matchy with their accessories and nails. This is one of the easier trends to replicate if you already have an outfit in mind. Use your creativity to ensure small details transcend into aspects of your makeup, hair or nails.

Are there any other beauty trends from NYFW 2017 that you’re dying to try? Let us know in the comments below.

Beauty Jobs – Five Cold Weather Hacks

Tuesday, January 24th, 2017

beauty-nine-to-five - beauty jobs in canadainspirational-image

Is the cold weather getting the best of your skin? Good news! Although everyone’s skin is different, there are hacks to add to your makeup and beauty routine which help fight dry, winter skin. You can instantly improve issues like flakiness, chapped lips and limp lashes with these tips and tricks to and you’ll be able to keep your skin healthy and radiant all winter long.

1-cleanser

1. Exfoliate Instead of Clarify

Dry, cold air can lead to breakouts and redness. And while your natural instinct may be to clarify your skin, this can actually only dry skin out more. Instead, choose an exfoliating cleanser with added moisture to heal, protect and sustain your skin, leaving a glowy, moisturized and healthy look.

2-tinted-moisturizer

2. Use Tinted Moisturizer Instead of Foundation

A tinted moisturizer will not only hydrate but add light coverage to uneven skin tones and hide blemishes. There are a variety of brands with varying coverage, but the trick is to find one with SPF – many forget to use SPF in the winter! Apply with a foundation brush so the formula goes on evenly.

3-waterproof-mascara

3. Use Brown or Blue Mascara

Brown or blue mascara (instead of black) is less heavy on pale, untanned winter skin, which gives off a brighter-eyed look. If it’s an especially wet, winter day, opt for a waterproof version of your favourite mascara to fight smudges and streaks. Pro tip: Only apply eyeliner on your top lid! Bottom liner may run in wet weather.4-tinted-lip-balm

4. Add Moisture with Tinted Lip Balm

No one wants flaky, chapped lips. They are uncomfortable and lipstick is a nightmare to apply. Fear not – tinted lip balm will quickly become your new best friend. Try the Clinique chubby stick moisturizing lip colour and balm, which was also an Allure best of beauty award winner in 2016 for both hydration and long-lasting colour.

5-setting-powder

5. Boost Limp Eyelashes with Powder

Cold air can make your eyelashes frail and limp. After applying mascara, use a Q-tip to apply a thin layer of setting powder, which thickens and plumps lashes. After, apply a second coat of mascara for much more noticeable volume.

Beauty Jobs – Six Ways to Revive Your Skin After the Holidays

Tuesday, January 17th, 2017

beauty-nine-to-five - beauty jobs in Canada

inspiration-image-via-imaxtree

It’s no secret that the month of December can take a serious toll on not only you, but also your complexion. From the late nights, holiday sweets, alcohol, and dry, freezing temps, it’s hardly a relaxing time for your skin.

Now that the New Year is in full swing, your work/life balance might be back on track, but has your skin caught up yet? If you don’t have enough hours in the day for some serious R&R, you’re in luck because we’ve rounded up six beauty products and procedures that are packed with just the right ingredients to do the trick.

These products and procedures will not only leave your skin glowing, but you’ll feel like you’ve just spent some time at a celebrity-approved spa.

1-overnight-detox-moisturizer

Overnight Detox Moisturizer

Not everyone has 15-20 minutes to stand around waiting for a drippy sheet mask to absorb into their skin. Luckily, Murad’s City Skin Overnight Detox is loaded with Vitamin C and skin-plumping antioxidants that promise to neutralize the effects of pollution and other damaging environmental factors overnight. Simply massage into face, neck and chest and wake up to revitalized, even skin.

2-oxygen-facial

Oxygen Facials

Celebrities such as Naomi Campbell and Kate Middleton swear by Intraseuticals’ oxygen facials before any red carpet event. These facials are proven to boost the radiance and quality of your complexion by infusing a combination of oxygen and peptides directly into your skin’s surface. Bonus: you only need a single 20-40-minute treatment to see instant, lasting results.

3-lift-firm-hydra-gel-eye-patches

Lift & Firm Hydra-Gel Eye Patches

You may have already seen these luxurious gold patches under the eyes of your favourite beauty gurus on Snapchat and Instagram. But if you have yet to see these beauties in action, these mini masks contain caffeine, humectants, and flecks of actual gold. Together these powerful ingredients will de-puff and firm the delicate skin underneath your eyes making you look like you’ve had a full week of sleep in only 10 minutes.

4-energizing-facial-mist

Energizing Facial Mists

A dull complexion may need constant pick-me-ups throughout the work day. The solution is simple: keep a travel sized facial mist on your desk or in your purse that contains skin-boosting ingredients like Vitamin C and moisturizing Aloe Vera. Facial mists instantly awaken and refresh the skin with just a few quick spritzes.

5-mild-facial-peel

Mild Facial Peel

Nothing can boost skin’s radiance in a short amount of time the way exfoliation can. Gently penetrate layers of dull skin to reveal a brighter appearance by using a mild AHA exfoliant every night. Follow up with SPF30 or higher throughout the day and you’ll have your coworkers wondering if you somehow managed to sneak in a clinical grade facial after work.

6-lip-polish

Lip Polish

Don’t worry, we didn’t forget about the lips! The matte liquid lipstick trend of 2016 left many mouths dry and with lines we didn’t even know we had. Counteract these effects with a lip scrub that uses shea butter and oils to plump and moisturize your pout while removing pesky dry patches.

Makeup Artist Jobs – Career Chat: Q&A with Lina Hanson

beauty-nine-to-five - beauty jobslinaheadshot

Lina Hanson is a celebrity make-up artist, natural beauty expert, and founder of her own skincare range. When I first met Lina, I was moved by her kindness and the information she provided me – regarding all the intricate details that go into creating her products. Her work, loyal following, and warm nature speak volumes on how impressive and inspiring she truly is. She is also an advocate of authentic beauty and celebrating yourself, which is something we can all find great comfort in. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to chat with Lina again and we spoke more about her brand’s expansion, her approach to makeup artistry, and her career advice for aspiring artists.

Beauty Nine to Five: Can you tell us about your experience as a makeup artist? How did you get your start in the beauty industry?

Lina Hanson: I started out as a makeup artist while I was living in New York.  I trained with and assisted a celebrity makeup artist until I moved to Los Angeles to further my career.  In LA, I signed with a makeup agency and started building clientele while also writing a beauty blog.  During this time, I would get products sent to me, and I started noticing what ingredients were in most beauty products on the market. After discovering all the harmful toxins in the products, I started switching out my makeup kit to all green products. This inspired me to write my book, Eco-Beautiful—The Ultimate Guide to Natural Beauty and Wellness, which ultimately led me to creating my own product line using the highest quality, natural and organic ingredients from around the world.

BNTF: Regarding your skincare collection, you told me it all started with the Global Face Serum, a product to fill a void in the market and to serve as a nourishing oil and primer. From the beginning did you anticipate expanding your brand to entire range of products?

<

LH: I’ve always had a big vision for the brand, and the belief in global beauty was the inspiration all along, so I definitely saw it expanding in various ways.  As far as skincare products, I only expand if I truly feel that a product adds something significant to the line, and it’s the best product possible. I go to great lengths to discover ingredients and come up with the right formulations, so every product truly is unique and has a story on its own.

BNTF: We spoke about how you crafted your line to be versatile with multi-purpose products, if you were to recommend just one item (or reveal your favorite!) what would it be and why?

LH: It’s so hard for me to pick just one product because I love them all so much. But if I absolutely had to, it may be the Global Face Serum. I don’t go a day without using it, and it’s the only moisturizer I need.  I love it before makeup application and when I travel too, because it always keeps my skin smooth and glowing. It has cleared and improved the texture of my skin tremendously. It’s all about the Global Face Serum for me.

BNTF: What ‘s a typical day like for you, while balancing your work as a celebrity makeup artist and being the mastermind behind skincare range?

LH: It varies so much from day to day. If I have a makeup job, it can be anything from a photo shoot in the desert, to a studio or traveling with a client for press. If I’m not on set as a makeup artist, I’m in my office, speaking to my retailers, answering emails, taking phone meetings, and overseeing production. I usually start my day with a workout. It keeps me balanced and focused throughout the day. At the end of the day, I’ll spend time with my husband, cooking or going out for dinner.

BNTF: You recently rebranded your entire line and introduced two new items! Can you tell us about the idea that went into this decision? What was this experience like for you?

LH: I always had a very clear vision for the brand from the start and along with the expansion of the collection, I felt that I wanted to share that vision more fully. Getting a new look and revamp was a big part of that.

The inspiration for the new products happened during my time in Southeast Asia. I learned a lot about the ingredients and the beauty secrets women there have been using for centuries.

1- Global Face Trio includes thanaka, rice bran, ginseng and lemongrass for its amazing skin enhancing properties.

2- I also learned about the amazing skin benefits of matcha, gold, and pearl. The Burmese, Korean, and Japanese women have used these ingredients for centuries and they are the inspiration behind Global Treasures.

BNTF: What is your signature makeup look?

LH: I love a natural makeup look with a focus on healthy glowing skin. In other words, lots of Global Face Serum and light foundation coverage that doesn’t look cakey.  For every day, I love soft and pretty makeup, that’s not overpowering. For evening, I like playing up the eyes, with brown, plum, or grey metallic tones. Ultimately, I believe makeup is supposed to enhance your own authentic beauty as opposed to cover it up.

BNTF: How important is authentic beauty to you and celebrating one’s natural skin? How do you feel about the “Instagram Makeup” sensation and other trendy makeup practices?

LH: Authentic beauty is everything I believe in. I believe our uniqueness is what makes us beautiful, and I think it’s a more empowering approach to beauty than the one we’re used to, due to so many stereotypical ideas of beauty.

As far as Instagram makeup, I think it’s great that women have a chance to learn to do their own makeup with various techniques, and it’s become a lot more attainable this way. Makeup is an art and I think everyone should have a chance to express their style.

However, with all the tutorials online etc., there are some I gravitate towards and others, not as much.

BNTF: Since you’re always on the go, what beauty items are your absolute must–haves while travelling?

<

LH: I always keep the following beauty products in my travel kit:

Satori Perfume Oil – Perfect scent for travel; it’s crisp and bright, yet warm and grounding.

Global Face Serum – Keeps my skin soft and hydrated.

Global Face Trio – Prevents breakouts while traveling across all different environments.

Miscellaneous – Tatcha Blotting papers, Henné lip balm, Ilia Beauty Lipstick, and Burt’s Bees Cleansing Cloths.

BNTF: What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

LH: The best advice I ever got was to follow my passion and my dreams.  Choosing a different path can be very scary at times, but I believe it’s more rewarding to work with something that you love and for which you are passionate.

BNTF: What advice do you have for those looking to pursue makeup artistry as their career?

<

LH: Learn your craft, study it, and start practicing. Every single day. I never went to makeup school, but I learned so much by studying fashion magazines and finding the style of makeup I liked, and practicing that.  Team up with a photographer whose work you like, and don’t be afraid to take risks. It’s a very competitive industry, so the most important thing is to absolutely really love what you’re doing.
