Beauty Jobs – Beauty Shelf Life 101

All beauty lovers understand how easy it is to stock up on items that we think we need only to forget about them in the back of our makeup drawers. Unfortunately, like food, our beloved beauty products also have an expiration date, some longer than others.

You can tell a product is past its shelf life if its texture and smell are off from when you bought it. Continuing to use products that are passed their expiry dates can cause irritation and allergies to your skin, eyes, and lips, which is that thing that anyone wants to deal with.

If you’re feeling in the dark and want to know if the go-to mascara that you’ve been using for a while is still in good shape, keep reading!


This category covers all the items we typically use in our daily skincare routines such as eye creams, wrinkle creams, moisturizes and sunscreens. This category has a shelf life duration of one year if the product is kept sealed, and six to ten months once the product has been opened. 



Most beauty lovers have a collection of different perfumes each for a different occasion. Fragrance is the longest-lasting product in your beauty routine — by far! If stored well (with the topper closed properly), perfumes can last up to ten years.


Foundation, Blush, and Eyeshadows
Liquid and cream foundation, blushes and eyeshadows have the same shelf life as skincare products because of their consistency and texture. But powdered products, on the other hand, have a shelf life of one to three years depending on the formulation. 


Lipstick/ Lipglosses
It doesn’t matter if it’s a stick or liquid format; overall these items can last one year. After that, you’ll start to notice a change in the consistency and application; it gets patchy and hard to apply for both. Liquid lipsticks can even get moldy and you can notice a change in scent.


Lipliner and Eyeliner
Both lip and eyeliner have a shelf life of one to two years. When they’ve passed the expiry date, you’ll notice that when you apply them, the product won’t apply as smoothly anymore. It’s really important to monitor your eyeliner, as it gets in contact with your eye, which can be very susceptible to infection. 


Liquid and Gel Liner
It’s very important to ensure you don’t use these items past their expiry date. These are items that go near your eyes and if applied once expired you may put yourself at risk of infection. Liquid and gel liners can last three to four months, and you’ll notice that as soon as these start to dry out its time to toss them out.


Mascara lasts three to four months, and it’s very noticeable when it’s not in good shape anymore. You’ll notice the formula will begin to get clumpy or it will start to smell funny, which means it’s gone bad.


Nail Polish
For the nail lovers out there, do you know that after one to two year, your beloved summer shade can go bad? Besides storing well, a good tip is also getting that cool trend colour in small sizes. You’re going to get more use before it gets bad or outdated.

In today’s cosmetics landscape, brands don’t have to strive to work the best, but they also have to be the best for the environment and the consumers that use them. Which is why we’re so happy to see that more and more brands are banning animal testing before putting their products into the market, which is why we wanted to share five cool traditional brands that are shaking up the cruelty-free beauty industry.


Cruelty-free means: A product and its ingredients weren’t tested on animals. PETA has a list of companies and brands that pledge to never to sell in China since the requirement to sell cosmetics in this country requires that they are tested on animals in order to have their products available in the Chinese market. We got super excited when we found out that one of our favourite drugstore brands is cruelty-free. E.L.F has great and affordable makeup brushes, blushes and eye shadows, the best part, great quality for a small price. We love the baked Highlighter, as it’s the perfect way to get a serious glow during winter. 

Josie Maran
Created by a supermodel that was looking to create a cosmetic line that actually does some good, Josie Maran is a pioneer when comes to Argan Oil. She is not only the queen of incorporating Argan Oil into all of her products but her brand 100% against animal testing. Josie’s must try: Whipped Mud Mask – it’s a scent-free product that work for every skin type.

Charlotte Tilbury
In the high-end department, we have the amazing celebrity makeup artist that wanted your go-to brand to be both luxurious and good for the environment at the same time. Not to mention Charlotte is against using animals as test components.  Tilbury’s Magic Cream is the celebrity secret, but we believe that the Matte Revolution lipstick will steal your heart; it has a smooth application and is long-lasting.

Cake Beauty
This Toronto-based brand does a great job at being 100% cruelty-free and develops the most delicious scented creams. They are manufactured in Canada and UK and they have cute packaging. The everything balm will be your best friend during winter, is a life savour for your lips, skin, elbows and even lashes!

Yes To Tomatoes
This brand has a great mission of creating great products without compromising on ingredients. Not to mention the packaging is made of recycled material and like all the products on our list, this brand does not test on animals. It’s a natural line made with ingredients that we can actually pronounce (score!) and can be found in your kitchen. The detoxifying charcoal mud mask should be on your list of must-have items.

In the past year, pastel hair shades have received a lot of love from fashionistas and influencers, but it’s a look that will work for every girl who loves to play with her look. If colouring your hair on your own makes you nervous, go to a professional and talk to a stylist about temporary and washable options that you can play with for the first time, but if you are ready to try it at home here are some cool brands that will help you explore this colourful world.

Arctic Fox
Favourite of Youtubers like Tasha Leelyn and Hailie Barber, Arctic fox is an American brand that is cruelty-free and vegan. It’s easy to use, won’t damage your hair and is semi-permanent, meaning it will last for a while will completely fade after a month or two. The brand has an amazing cause behind it, it’s a dye for a cause, as the brand donates proceeds to help animal protection institutions.

Clairol Color Crave
This is the easiest semipermanent colour to use of them all. The tube comes with an applicator, so it won’t stain your hands and comes out after one wash. It’s perfect for newbies that want to experiment with colours without any drastic change.

L’Oreal was one of the first drugstore brands to bring colourful hues from the salon and to your home.
This baby is semi-permanent, comes out within a couple of washes and very user-friendly so you give yourself some fun highlights or try colouring your entire head. The product works better for light coloured hair such as blonde and gray, but if you have highlights in your hair that will also take the pastel hues.


Lime Crime Unicorn Hair
This brand was known for dominating the makeup game and it has recently transitioned into the hair game. Lime Crime has semi-permanent, easy to apply colours that are perfect for the brand fanatics. It claims to fade gracefully and it’s also vegan, so if you’re looking for something durable, this is your pick. Pro tip: To keep the colour vibrant for longer, wash your hair with a baby shampoo and rinse with cold water. 

Splat Hair Chalk
If you want to play without compromising your original hair colour, hair chalk is for you. All you need to is rub the chalk against your hair and you’ll be left with playful colour that will wash out immediately.

Beauty Jobs – Beauty Hacks You Need to Try

During the colder months, we often get lazy when it comes to getting ready to go out. But this is actually the best time to test out some beauty hacks at home for your makeup, hair, nails and skin. If you have yet to jump on the beauty hack train, we’ve rounded up our favourite hacks that you need to try this fall and winter.

Have you attempted contouring yet? If not, no problem. A great trick is to use is, believe it or not, a chopstick! Just place the chopstick in the center of your nose line as a guide and apply the contour cream or bronzer from the nose bone to the tip, after you finish, remove the chopstick and start to blend. This hack will give you a great guideline for starters.

Black Heads
If you are wondering if those black masks that went viral on social media actually work, we have a treatment you can actually DIY pretty quick. All you need is a little bit of non-toxic glue and an activated charcoal capsule (available at any natural food store). Then simply mix one capsule with one tablespoon of nontoxic glue and it’s ready for application. Finally, add one to two drops of your favourite hydrating face oil to the mix to treat your face at the same time. Apply the mix in the desired areas and wait 20 to 30 minutes and peel it off. You’ll be left with skin that’s silky smooth and blackhead-free.

Dry Hair Ends
This hack claims to restore your split ends and also help treat those with chemically damaged hair. In a bowl mix 1 ½ tablespoon of honey and olive oil and apply the mixture to the ends of your hair. It will get a bit greasy, but let it stay overnight. Wash it off in the morning; you’ll notice almost immediately that your ends are less dry. Repeat the process every 15 days; you’ll notice a great improvement, especially if you are not ready to get your dead ends trimmed.

Soft Lips
Want to do your own lip scrub to keep your lips smooth for your fave liquid lipsticks? This one is easy and takes just five minutes. Mix together 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of coconut oil and 1 teaspoon honey in a bowl and transfer it to a small container with a lid and voila! Your scrub is ready to use. Keep the mix sealed away from the heat and the mix will last for at least two months.

Beauty Jobs – Recreate Diane Kruger’s TIFF Red Carpet Look

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has officially come to a close, and this year might have been the most exciting to date. There was not only countless film screenings that we’re incredibly moving: the world premiere of Lady Gaga’s new documentary The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has officially come to a close, and this year might have been the most exciting to date.


There was not only countless film screenings that we’re incredibly moving: the world premiere of Lady Gaga’s new documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two to the moving true love story Breathe starring Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy to name a few, but the stars seriously brought their A-game when it came to their red carpet looks. Without a doubt, Diane Kruger, who starred in the film In The Fade, was one of the best-dressed stars at TIFF, who looked like an absolute knockout in a metallic Prabal Gurung gown at the premiere of her latest film.

Hairstylist Bridget Brager styled Kruger’s hair to compliment the “strength and beauty” of her dress, and we were able to get the inside scoop on how to recreate Kruger’s incredible look from the stylist herself.


1. Blow it out
Beginning with wet hair, I used the T3 Featherweight Luxe 2i dryer to rough dry the hair to enhance texture and volume. At the end of the blow dry, I used the cool shot while holding the roots up to ‘freeze’ the volume.


2. Set with a deep part
Once completely dry, I created a deep, angled side part with a rat tail comb.


3. Create a messy texture
Next, I separated the top section of the hair and clipped it while creating a low, sleek ponytail, using the T3 SinglePass Luxe flat Iron to create bends for a messy texture in the short ends of the ponytail.


4. Make bends
Taking down the top section, I then took 1” vertical sections and made bends in the hair using the T3 SinglePass Luxe Flat Iron.

  • Technique: I did this by clamping the flat iron on each section about an inch away from the head. I then began to create a half bend up, and then, opening my iron before making a complete turn, bent the hair in the opposite direction. I continued this technique down to the ends.


5. Finger comb the look
When completed, I used my fingers to relax the bends in the hair so it was not so wavy.


6. Backcomb for added height
Once I was at the very top of the head, I used a rat tail comb and backcombed for added height at the crown. Then, I made sure to make the same wave with the flat iron around the face for “perfect face-framing hair!”


7. Final touches
Finally, I mixed together a light oil and texture paste and scrunched the hair for added texture and shine. Once the hair was in place, I finished with a strong hairspray.

Beauty Jobs – Q&A With Ashley and Phil of basd Body Care

Phil LeBeau and Ashley Meston are the masterminds behind basd Body Care; an up and coming Canadian plant-based body care company with a passion for promoting self-love and truly feeling good in your skin. The dynamic duo first entered the plant-based world after working with Vega, a clean, plant-based nutrition company. Today, they have transitioned into the realm of plant-based skin care and are taking the industry by storm. Beauty Nine to Five had the opportunity to chat with Phil and Ashley and learn what attracted them to the natural beauty industry, what sets them a part from the competition and what keeps them motivated.


BNTF: Can you first tell us a little bit about basd, what you guys do and how you got started?


A&P: basd started with an idea, ‘empower the individual’. We believed that we could create a brand that encouraged consumers to be who they are, free of judgment, free of constraints, and to live their life, their way.  From there we looked at all the different categories that seemed to be under developed with true leadership brands, brands that were willing to take a stand and actually deliver on the things they promise.


BNTF: What is it about the natural beauty industry initially caught your attention?


A&P: We love the consumer, it is the same consumer we were familiar with our time at Vega, but this allows a different conversation with them, about not just eating better, but helping them do more of the little things that develop their best life. Clean-products, plus self-love and appreciation we are often too quick to forget.

BNTF: In an industry that’s dominated by conventional beauty brands, how do you stay true to what you believe in?


A&P: It is in our DNA as founders and the brands DNA to be transparent and stand up for what we believe in. We are fortunate enough to have had great inspirations and mentors that help shape two individuals who are mentally tough, but also kind and sensitive to the needs of others. We put this same energy into the brand and products. basd isn’t a bunch of products but an idea of being who you are and who you want to be regardless of the outside pressures. You do you better than anyone, and we feel the same way.


BNTF: Aside from your love for clean beauty, what was it that attracted you to launching your own business?


A&P: We have always had a drive to create, and connect with people, for us, creativity is through the development of the business and finding solutions to the problems we face every day. We got a taste of launching a business with Vega, but now we are all on our own. We have a lot of supporters, who we want to make proud, this drives us to work our tail off, and want to surprise and delight the consumer.

BNTF: What led you to decide that skincare was the route that you wanted to pursue?


A&P: Having worked in plant-based nutrition for so many years we knew firsthand the importance of making quality choices for your body. While there are lots of options now within food there are far less in body care. What you put on your skin is an intimate relationship with that product and we felt we could do better than what was offered at conventional and provide another option within natural. We wanted to create a product people could trust from the efficacy point of view but build a brand that could inspire.


BNTF: What was the biggest obstacle you faced when getting your brand off the ground? How did you overcome this?


A&P: Finding quality manufactures, developing quality systems, and of course, getting the packaging, warehousing, office and all the operational stuff in order.  But the absolute biggest obstacle was developing the product in a way we could be proud of. It took us over a year to launch. We had to get the right scents, we wouldn’t make this in a bathtub, but put a brand out that the consumer can trust, but also products that deliver on the expectations they have on products they put on their skin.


We overcame this by one thing and one thing only, putting in the work, and asking a million questions to anyone who would talk to us.


No one gets to where they are alone; we are always talking to those who have gone before us, and always talking to those just starting out to share our experiences.


We build a better industry when we work together.

BNTF: You not only have an incredible lineup of products, but your overall brand is amazing too and we love that you use clever hashtags like #basdbabe, which is great for standing out on social media. How has social media helped your brand since launching?


A&P: It has allowed us to have a real voice with the consumers in places we never would be able to reach in person. It gives us a chance to tell a story, but listen to others stories. We have made so many great friendships and connections because of social. Our tribe is out there, and we are discovering them every day. We love it! #basdbabes it’s time to rise and slay.


BNTF: Now that your brand has been up and running for a few months are those early business jitters over?


A&P: They are never over  when you have your livelihood on the line, you wake up every day nervously excited about what is in front of you. I am not sure we will settle, we know our consumers have choices every day on how and where to spend their money, we take that very seriously and want to ensure those who buy basd love every minute of their choice. It’s a privilege to be part of their purchase, not a right and we constantly have to work for that opportunity.


BNTF: How would you say you stay motivated? Where do you look for inspiration?


A&P: We love what some of the boutique natural brands are doing like Province Apothecary. They are a great brand and we love them, a great leader for us to look up too. Secondly, we often look outside the industry in fashion, design, and other unusual places for inspiration or how others might do things differently.


When it comes to motivation, we rely on our own determination – we are highly self-driven and hold each other accountable to everything! Moreover though, we find our biggest high comes from our fans sharing feedback and promoting self-love via basd – when you see a babe feeling good about who they are because of basd and another babe cheering them on, you know you are doing the right thing and must work harder to make that happen all the time!

BNTF: What is your number one tip for aspiring entrepreneurs? What about women and men in general?


A&P: There is a quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry- “a goal without a plan is just a wish”


It doesn’t matter if you are a woman or a man; we are all humans capable of amazing things. But, they don’t just happen by chance. You create your own luck, by setting out to do something, then putting in the work to do it.


We have found the most success and fun when we surround ourselves with people who act as champions and coaches rather than advisories – when we work together as equals we are far more powerful in everything we do.


BNTF: What do you wake up looking forward to next? What’s next for basd?


A&P: We have some very exciting new scents coming, and a great line extension that allows us to stay true to our brand and deliver on our plant-basd ethics. However, we are most excited when we get the chance to chat with more babes and are working hard to find even more ways to connect, grow and even give back.
