Hair Stylist Jobs – Save the Gym Hair

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

Bikini season is fast approaching so I know you ladies are hitting the gym hard these days. I’ve been getting my workouts in whenever I can but after a vigorous sweat sesh there’s not always time for a full wash and blow-dry. So what’s a girl to do when her hair’s a hot mess and she’s got somewhere to go? Well, try some of my post-gym hair tricks and you’ll be ready to go from locker room to real world in no time.

1) If you have straight hair: tote a mini flat iron. There’s enough equipment to pack for the gym without hauling your hot styling tools as well, unless, of course, your flat iron is the size of a small stapler. As luck would have it, Sephora carries the perfect travel sized ceramic flat iron for après-gym touch-ups. The Amika Glitzy Gold & Pink Leopard Mini Ceramic Styler heats up quickly, comes in a cute and convenient tote, and is just $35.

2) If you have bangs: do a quick wash with a mini shampoo. To refresh your fringe, tie the rest of your hair back and give your bangs a quick cleanse, then blow them out with a round brush and you’re good to go. Miniature versions of your favourite shampoo are easy to obtain at your salon but I particularly like Bumble and bumble’s Crème de Coco shampoo for its amazing scent and moisturizing coconout and murumuru butters (and it’s only $8 for 2oz!).

3) If your hair is long: rock a braided style. Take a note from braid queen Lauren Conrad and tame your long hair by braiding at the hairline. This style looks equally adorable if you leave the rest of your hair down or pull it back into a ponytail or a loose bun. Bonus? It’s a totally versatile style that looks flirty enough for a date but professional enough for work. (Photo courtesy of CovetedCanvas)

4) If your hair is curly: spritz with water and a styling spray. If your curls fall flat or frizz up when you get hot and sweaty, you only need a couple key tools to bring them back to life. Carry a small spray bottle of water in your gym bag to apply a bit of moisture to your hair. Follow with an alcohol-free curl-activating spray to bring back the bounce. Try John Frieda Frizz-Ease Dream Curls Curl-Perfecting Spray, $7, available at London Drugs.

5) If your hair is short: try a twisted style with cute bobby pins. When I cut my long hair into an above-shoulder bob, I had to adjust my after-gym hairstyle since I could no longer rely on a French braid or ponytail. Armed with a pack of bobby-pins, this twisted look inspired by Gwen Stefani is my new go-to after I mess up my blow-out on the treadmill. For extra cute factor, swap out your regular bobby pins for brightly coloured ones. (Photo courtesy of Glamour)

6) If you need a quick refresher: spray with dry shampoo. Undone and textured styles are actually on-trend for spring; if you’re lucky enough that your after-workout hair falls just so, then all you need is a spray with dry shampoo to remove oil and odour. Try Tresemme Fresh Start Volumizing Dry Shampoo, $4, available at London Drugs.

Vancouver Beauty Jobs – Winter Therapy

Tuesday, January 15th, 2013

Whether you live on the coast, in the mountains, or on the land-locked prairies, there is one thing we can all agree on: the changing seasons wreaks havoc on our hair. Gale force winds, negative temperatures, relentless rain, and swirling snow all take a toll on your tresses, but when winter comes, don’t be afraid to fight back! With a few foolproof products in your cupboard, you’ll be ready to face the elements with not a hair out of place.

1. Ojon Damage Reverse Restorative Treatment Plus, $38 for 3.1oz., available at Sephora. A must-have for dry, damaged hair! This deep-penetrating mask is ideal in cold, dry climates; it also helps prevent breakage, an important reinforcement when combating forceful winds.

2. L’Oreal EverPure Moisture Conditioner, $10, available at London Drugs. This is a great everyday conditioner that won’t drain your winter-getaway fund. It’s formulated without harmful sulfates and is especially beneficial on coloured hair – although anyone will benefit from its extra-gentle formula (and it smells great, too!).

3. Tresemme TRES TWO Extra Hold Hair Spray, $2, available at London Drugs. I swear by this drugstore hairspray when I want my hair to stay perfect all day (and night) long. Even in the face of rain and humidity, it exhibits incredible hold without stiffness or stickiness.

4. Bumble and bumble Straight Blow Dry, $29 for 5oz. Flat-iron addicts like me know that heat styling does double-damage in drying winter months; applying this straightening balm before blow-drying will cut down on styling time and allow you to turn down your straightener’s temperature without sacrificing smoothness.

5. Living proof No Frizz Leave-in Conditioner, $29, available at Sephora. Frizzies are banished with this intense moisturizing leave-in treatment, perfect for those with curly or chemically-treated locks. Boasting the first anti-frizz breakthrough ingredient in 30 years, PolyfluoroEster, this conditioner is silicone free, meaning it provides long-lasting humidity protection and smoothness without weighing your hair down.

6. Macadamia Natural Oil Healing Oil Treatment, US $40 for 4.2oz., available in Vancouver at Spa Boutique, 3630 West 4th Ave, 604-734-7114. When the sun does shine in winter, the natural UV protection of macadamia oil ensures you are prepared. It smells amazing, decreases drying time by up to 50%, nourishes hair, and decreases tangling and frizziness – what’s not to love?

Makeup Artist Jobs – TV Beauties

Thursday, November 8th, 2012

We love stealing a few beauty tips from our favourite TV characters. With new shows featuring plenty of smart, quirky and funny ladies there’s no shortage of beauty inspiration.

Kat Dennings as Max in 2 Broke Girls:
Max is known for her snarky attitude and quick wit. We can’t help but be envious of Kat Dennings perfectly full lips which she highlights with a bright red lipstick when on the 2 Broke Girls set. We like NARS’ Lipstick in Flair ($24, available at Sephora), a sheer burnished berry shade, for an almost exact match to Max’s.

Jemma Kirke as Jessa on HBO’s GIRLS:
Of all the Girl’s in Lena Dunham’s brilliant show, Jessa’s effortless boho-beauty style has captured our attention in every episode. Her long waves which occasionally include a braid of some sort, match her wild child personality perfectly. To get the same kind of undone waves we like Bumble and Bumble‘s Texture Hair (Un)Dressing Creme ($26) for Jessa’s go-to tousled messy look.

Leighton Meester as Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl:
Blair has certainly grown-up from her days at Constance where she would rarely be seen without a bow headband to compliment her prep school uniform. Now that she has taken over Waldorf designs, sophisticated up-do’s and polished makeup is her signature. For a little extra help at achieving Blair’s shiny brunette strands try Carol’s Daughter Macadamia Shine Mist ($18, available at Sephora), spritz after completing any hairstyle for extra sheen.

Zooey Deschanel as Jess on New Girl:
We think all girls with glasses should take a few tips from New Girl’s Jess. Big frames are already such a statement that minimal makeup is really all you need. To enhance her bright blue eyes, Jess usually sticks to neutral brown shadows, normally matte shades. We like this bareMinerals duo in ‘The Enlightenment’ ($20, available at Sephora), the lighter colour is perfect to sweep across the entire lid and the chocolate brown is best for defining the crease and outer corner.

Makeup Artist Jobs – The Low Bun

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012

A bad hair day is not something I take lightly. I think the majority of ladies can agree that the status of one’s hair can make or break the mood of the entire day. What better way to solve such woes than a simple, sleek style like the low bun, which has been seen all over the Fall runway and red carpets alike. The low bun is a glamourous yet effortless look that is not only so on trend this season, but also so easy to attain, it’s positively foolproof.

Getting the look is a cinch:

1. Coat damp hair with a volumizer and blow-dry straight.

(Serge Normant Meta Lush Volumizer, $23, available at Sephora)

2. After partying, pull hair into a low ponytail, securing with an elastic.

(Goody Ouchless Mini Elastics, available at Shoppers Drug Mart)

3. Next, mist hair with a shine spray to create a sleek finish.

(Redken ShineFlash 02 Glistening Mist)

4. Twist the ponytail into a chignon as loose or tight as desired and secure with a U-pin.

(Goody U hair pins, available at Walmart, Jean Coutu, Loblaws and London Drugs)

5. Set with a finishing spray and you’re good to go!

(Bumble and Bumble Does It All Styling Spray, $14 available at Sephora)

The low bun is a look that’s sophisticated yet perfect for those days when wearing your hair down just doesn’t feel like an option. Bad hair days banished and keeping on trend? We’d say it’s the best of both worlds!

Small-sized beauty products that can really deliver are an essential part of any travel kit, especially since we’re smack dab in the middle of summer and prime vacation time. Whether on a road trip or a long haul flight, these travel friendly beauty gems will keep you looking and feeling fresh from door to door.

1. bliss lemon+sage body butter, $6, available at Sephora: Travel can often make your hands feel dry and dull, so slathering on this rich and fresh scented lotion will bring both your hands and senses back to life.

2. Ole Henriksen Truth To Go Wipes, $15, available at Sephora: Spending an extended period of time in a car or plane can make us feel grimy so I love using these wipes to freshen up my makeup, hands and even feet!

3. Laura Mercier Flawless Face Kit, $65, available at Sephora: This little kit contains everything you need to arrive to your destination looking flawless including a concealer, primer, tinted moisturizer and various tools to touch-up any travel mishaps.

Makeup Artist Jobs – Beachy Waves

Saturday, July 28th, 2012

As soon as summer begins every girl dreams about effortless beachy waves, not only are they fuss-free but they are also a perfect sexy style that can take you from lounging on sandy beaches to a night out on the town. After years of trying to steal Blake Lively’s luscious locks I’ve finally nailed down the best products and tools. A beauty industry and personal favourite, Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray ($24) adds volume and texture to give you the ‘just out of the ocean’ look. This product contains seaweed and kelp extract to add moisture to your hair, which is perfect for a day in the sun, which can typically leave your hair feeling dry and damaged. I love using this alone to keep my hair routine simple and minimal in the summer. To amp it up at night, all it takes is one simple tool, I like Sultra’s ¾ inch wand curling iron ($130), which is appropriately named ‘the bombshell’. Curling a couple pieces while leaving out the ends of your hair, will add a little more wave and polish. What are your favourite products to achieve beach goddess tresses?
