Beauty Jobs – Pore Control

Monday, May 6th, 2013

I have a love-hate relationship with my magnifying mirror. While this handy tool allows a zoomed-in view ideal for accurate tweezing and mega-precise makeup application, the up-close-and-personal scrutiny of my pores can be daunting. Blemishes and blackheads due to clogged pores is a common woe for many. Blackheads are the result of clogged oil and debris that is oxidized and darkened within pores – yuck! And while a weekly trip to the facialist sure ain’t in the budget, unclogging pores is totally achievable at home with these helpful steps:

1. Scrub it up: Break down sebum that gets stuck in the pores and causes the blackhead. Use a facial scrub that contains 2% or less salicylic acid exfoliator every morning. Allow it to sit on damp skin for about a minute before rinsing – this allows the acid to work its magic. We recommend: Soap & Glory The Greatest Scrub Of All Facial Exfoliator, $18, available at Sephora or Shoppers Drug Mart

2. Extract: Okay, this step might seem a little scary to do solo, but using the proper tools makes it easy and safe for your skin. Don’t even think about using your fingers. After you shower, while skin is still damp, use an extractor tool (we recommend: Sephora Collection 3-in-1 Extractor, $22 available at Sephora) to press down on skin to lift the blackhead out. Follow up with a spot treatment containing benzoyl peroxide (we recommend: Ole Henriksen Roll-On Acne Clearing Solution, $22 available at Sephora).

3. Grab a vacuum: Not your actual vacuum, rather using handy gadgets that act like such for your face that loosen dirt and oil and remove dead skin cells. How clever! We recommend: Bliss Pore-Fector Gadget 3-Piece Kit, $185 available online at www.amazon.ca (this bad-boy uses sonic vibrations to power-wash pores and eliminate impurities) or Rodan + Fields Redefine Macro Exfoliator, $279 available online at www.rodanandfields.com (uses gentle suction to sweep away dead skin cells)

Beauty Jobs – Waxing vs. Shaving

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

With bikini season (hopefully) soon approaching, it’s time to show off a little skin. Waxing is a great way to remove any unwanted hair however most women result to shaving. The pros and cons of waxing vs. shaving are pretty obvious: with shaving, it’s quick and easy but you have to do it more often; with waxing, you get longer results but you have to wait until hair grows in between treatments (and it hurts!) But suck up the pain because waxing is the way to go!

In obtaining and maintaining flawless skin, waxing is an important part of any beauty routine. Personally, I have always favoured waxing. If you can tolerate the minor discomfort that comes along with it, then this is the method for you. From experience, I’ve noticed thinner and fewer hair growth which is common since the hair is removed directly from the root. With shaving, the tip hair is being cut making it difficult to poke through the skin and can cause ingrown hairs, rash and stubble. (yuck!)
You may be thinking: “It’s such a hassle to go to a salon every 3-4 weeks, and so costly!” So do it yourself! For at-home waxing, try Bliss Poetic Waxing At-Home Hair Removal Kit ($48, available at Sephora) The easy-to-use kit comes with 3 large and small spatula’s, cleanser, oil, and an ingrown eliminating pad.

If you’re a regular shaver, wait 2-3 weeks before waxing so the hairs are long enough to grab. Do not apply moisturizer right before waxing; your skin should be clean and dry. For best results, start off by applying baby powder on your skin to allow the wax to adhere to your hair better. Pull the wax strip against the grain of hair growth to ensure all hairs are removed. After waxing, exfoliate and moisturize to smooth skin.

Finding the type of wax for your skin type is key for ensuring smooth results. Honey wax is the most popular wax used and it’s tough because it grabs onto even the shortest hairs. Cream wax is great if you are prone to waxing sensitivity. Because cream waxes contain conditioning agents, it helps moisturize while it’s on the skin. These are both types of soft waxes that are used with the strip waxing method; spreading a thin layer over the skin and using a paper strip to remove the hair. If you haven’t tried hard wax, you’re missing out. Ideal for small areas such as your face, this wax’s thick consistency hardens when it cools on the skin and is removed by simply lifting the edge of the hardened wax and pulling, no strips needed.

Waxing will have your legs looking much better than any razor. So throw away that razor this spring and show off your smooth legs in those cut off vintage denim shorts.

Calgary Beauty Jobs – Rub a Dub Dub

Wednesday, November 7th, 2012

Summer time showers are all sudsy and refreshing, but when it’s cold outside, I like to linger in the steam and come out revitalized. Sadly, this can dry out the skin, and combined with winter causing dryness, shower products must work double time to keep my skin soft. These magic potions do just that, and feel amazing to use.

This multi tasking cleanser foams up when it comes in contact with water, and when rinsed away, leaves skin divinely smooth, silky soft and deliciously scented. (L’Occitane Almond Cleaning and Soothing Shower Oil, $24 for 250 mL)

This smoothing scrub is the perfect cure for winter chills as it is self-heating and warms as you exfoliate. Dry, flaky skin is replaced with hydrated, soft skin and is achieved with a super relaxing spa-like experience thanks to its eucalyptus, rosemary and lavender essential oil packed formula. (Bliss Hot Salt Scrub, $40 for 417 mL, available at Sephora)

I discovered this skin soothing face wash while living in Australia and fell in love with its gentle formula as my skin was more sensitive than usual due to the extreme UV exposure. Two years and seven bottles later, I’m still in love and refuse to use lather up with anything other than this rosewater, cucumber soap-free formula. (Fresh Soy Face Cleanser, $40 for 150 mL)
