If Tumblr and Thought Catalog have taught me anything, it’s that a lot of twenty-somethings have a deep nostalgia for the nineties. And that’s cool! I’m one of them, too. I’ve spent many an hour reminiscing about Daria, One Saturday Morning and my lost childhood. Working in the beauty industry these days, however, I also appreciate the iconic looks from that long lost decade – in particular, the captivating dark matte lipsticks. While I tend to go for bright lip colours, there’s something both irresistible and impenetrable about a flat matte lip that drives me to buy tube after tube of burgundy, black cherry and dark purple lipsticks as soon as Fall hits. Now, luckily for all of us, the look is back in style, having been spotted on the Fall/Winter 2012 runways at Gucci, Rochas and Bottega Veneta. Obviously it’ll next be seen in your makeup bag, right? Right. Here are some options that you will definitely want to stock:
1. MAC Lipstick in Cyber, $18
2. NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Amsterdam, $32
3. Revlon Matte Lipstick in Wine Not, $9, available at Well.ca
4. Ilia Beauty Lipstick in Femme Fatale, $24
